Exactly what I was thinking - in before the 1980s these heater core pipes would of been brazed metal pipes, although likely destined to have rusted through by now.
Mitsfix are notoriously bad at customer service, and kudos to you for calling them out. In regards to the plastic weld. I would have epoxy 2 pack around the plastic to reinforce it with some fibreglass as well. If metal wasn't an option. Plastic scares me , if your going to go to the effort, taking the time to never have to do it ever again is always worth it.
Mitsi-Bit's in SA are great blokes Sean if you are after part's. Give them a try with nutting out your car. Many rely on them for the IPRA build's too. All the best with your dream car🌟

its not too hard to learn. whats helped me was having a dad with a bit of knowledge but i also do a lot of reading, i have workshop manuals and i also just give jobs a go and they prove not to be too hard. its at the point where my dad asks me questions now.
I completed this job on my Magna about a year ago and it wasn't half as daunting as I expected. Patience and a methodical approach required as you showed, the only challenge like you was getting the HVAC box out of the way enough to slide out the heater core - what I did was remove the top pipe and snap the bottom pipe off due to lack of access for a Torx - given I had new replacements. Bought the same replacement core and pipes from the same seller for what I thought was an exorbitant price for what it was but thankfully it was all intact and arrived quickly. What I noticed following replacement was how much quicker the heat came in after a cold start.
Most people don’t do a reverse flush on the cooling system, good to get the little stuff out. With the plastic tubes most would just leave it for the next person.
Agreed on it seeming more daunting than it is - the first time I tackled this job 4 or 5 years ago, I never thought i'd get it done, but the same methodical approach as you've shown here was all that's needed, and saved a fortune in labor if you could even find a mechanic willing to do this. I remember doing this I was outside in the middle of summer with a magna guru(and all round good mate) helping me, I splurged and went genuine everything because lets face it if I'm taking the dash out I only want to do it once we got in there to find a near new heater core and elbows and the 2 dollar seals had failed but many swear words later I had a working heater... in the middle of summer. Was very grateful come winter though can't wait to see next video hope the plastic weld holds. Another glue product I'm very fond of is a 2 part ca system called rapid fix has like a ca glue and a powder it's good for adding a bit of structure where needed, doesn't work on some plastics though

I don't believe that story about Auspost not picking up stuff for two weeks for a second, but given my experiences it certainly seems out of character for them. As for that Mitsifix guy, he reminds me of a lot of wrecking yard staff I've dealt with over the years. Lol.

Mate did a VHT colour change on an XC Falcon half cloth interior years back. It made the fabric a tiny bit crusty but looked and lasted well. Worked magic on the vinyl 👍
Good work getting stuck into the dashboard job, so many are scared to. Just a shame who you purchased your parts from because, again, not many have had good experiences with them. There were some doing billet outlets but like you said time constraints. Good job man
Those heater pipes are an absolute nightmare, Had to do it on my old TJ Magna Wagon. But what I did is since it was unregistered when I bought it I pulled the dash and took the heater core and pipes to a local Metal fab shop, Then got them to make up the replacements out of Alloy which were then O ring and siliconed in place and everything reassembled cost me less then $100 for a permanent fix. I also put the TJ Magna VRX body kit and sports wagon wing on it and found a rare as hens teeth leather interior for it, So it was White externally with a black and tan leather interior in addition to having the manual conversion. It was a Mint unit got it on the road and unfortunately 11 months after putting it on the road it was Rear ended by a Camry and Written off, Ended up replacing it with a KJ Verada V6Xi which all the manual conversion etc went into and the VRX body kit on and started calling it the KJ Verada VR-Xi. Only sold it last year after 8 years of ownership with near 400,000km on it to another enthusiast, I now scoot around in a 2005 380 VRX in Sable Black and factory 5 speed manual. Given the choice between the Magna / Verada and 380 I prefer the Magna / Verada.

Great video, I have experience with the JB weld plastic sealing kit and it does the job, so you should be fine. I accidentally broke one of the tabs on the red Outlander’s light while polishing it for a roady and it dried firm and held very strong when put back into the car. In terms of online parts, some are good, some are very ordinary. I had to wait weeks from parts in Australia (some were only 20km from me), whereas odd parts from Spain, UK or Estonia I had them within days.
JB Weld makes good stuff. There's an old Project Farm video where he JB welded the cylinder head of a Briggs & Stratton engine, and it actually worked. Sean might be in with a chance here.

I would recommend Mitsi-Bits they are a shop in sth Australia. I've never even bought anything from them but they have been so helpful when I have been annoying with questions over the years haha...they have alot if not every Mitsubishi part ever made .

I had to do this job twice a couple years ago on my lancer which is pretty much identical procedure. The "new" heater core I got also leaked so you can never be sure you won't have to do it again.
What a weird and unique car. Its just right up my alley. I love watching resto projects of models we never got here in the states. Its going to be a common issue trying to find parts for niche cars from across the world, whether it be price or quality but just keep your head up and do what you can. Brings back distant memories of having to replace a heater flap (a $10 part) right inside the HAVC box on a Lotus Excel. Lotus back then had all individual dials and switches and very few bulky connectors and of course mobile phone cameras didn't exist so everything had to be labelled as it came out. Remarkably it all went back together with no issues but took almost 2 sold days. Looking forward to if/when the heater balance shaft fails on by Falcon BF. Only problem is I'm 35 years older now...
You can come and do my BA air mix shaft for practice 😂 it broke the other day and it's stuck on full cold (lucky it's summer!). I really Cbf doing it myself. Sean, you wanna make a video about it? 😂

Maybe you could even borrow the parts that you can’t get and get them scanned and printed and then get the scan files saved onto a usb stick in case you need to replace any of them?
Hi Sean, it is very unfortunate that you are not receiving adequate customer support with your purchased items. Australia Post is also a joke, going by my experience; delivery taking two weeks for an item 10 kms away. Regardless, it's great that you are repairing issues such as dash out/heater core jobs; IMO more than a back yard DIY'er would of done. Great work mate!

Whata afterthought 😳. Using plastic 'O' ringed heater pipes is a recipe for disaster!? I personally would of soldered alloy pipes to the existing core? 🤔
Well done mate, huge job and tackled well, another tip is to use zip lock bags and mark them, jas saved me countless times when looking for that screw that went somewhere 🤔
That cubby hole to replace the ashtray is what my TL Magna has. To replace the lighter, it has a socket inside the console bin. There's also a second socket between the rear seat and the door which is not in the manual. Especially useful for my 12V compressor! I suspect Mitsubishi was loading the 'features' in to make up for the ugly looks.
The Magna dash is far easier to pull apart than a than a Holden VY. Another great video Sean & at least it'll help those who maybe in the same boat. You might have to hit up a couple of Mitsubishi wreckers in Brisvegas for other parts or just go see them to see if you can scrounge around.
I’ve done a couple of VYs and the dash removal wasn’t too bad, the V6 heater box removal was ok also but the V8 heater box is an absolute nightmare because there are bolts so close the the engine and trying to get your hands in there ended with many cuts and scratches and much much more swearing
@@knight2425 I always broke the centre console plastics which was always a pain. Thank god for decent Holden wreckers! I have a VY series I S V6 and a VY series I S with the optional LS1 which is now my new project. I'm lucky that the heater box in the LS1 is good but the best find I got was 2 of the optional smokers pack which the connector is there for straight connection. The smokers pack was a $360 option back in the day. The swearing continues on both utes lol.
@@1969Risky I had a VY Calais V6 and a VY LS1 project car, the project car got all the Calais goodies including the dual zone climate control unit hence the dashboards out and I didn’t break anything. Like I said the V6 was a dream to work on but the V8 was a nightmare, the dashboard removal isn’t a small job by any means but it’s all straight forward

The difference between the years tracking down panels/trim is so different now. years ago it was easy but now it's hard to find good condition parts/trim at a good price. I'm in the throes of doing an OTR & adding the SS sailplane endcap with the 3rd brake light. I'm tired of idiots sitting on my ass & when I brake they don't know until it's nearly too late.
I had 2004 vrx 5 speed auto was a great car but they are crazy thirsty. I always thought it'd be huge fun with a 5mt. Great to see you saving such a unique car. 👍👍
@@tonybolstad9514 Wikipedia has them at this. It's just about paying attention to the instruction manual. It specifically says that to get the best fuel economy, you need to keep rev's below 2000rpm. Drive with a light foot too. If you keep the car at 70km/h for say 500km in 5th gear, might be surprised at what it will show you.
Also Sports and VR-X better on fuel thanks to the more free flowing exhaust. The upgraded 6G74 engine became standard on all later TJ's, minus the free flowing exhaust.
You know your magna mad when your installing the re trimmed verada door cards and putting tinsel on the bullbar of the verada but stop everything to watch this 🤣
Can I suggest fitting a tube internal to each side of the broken bits and epoxy them both together, might be better and stronger than the plastic weld.
I'd get in touch with 'Eastern Ranges Motors,' formally Magna's R Us. Speak to Aaron or Michael. Very knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. They carry quite a few spare parts. Much better service than Mitsfix.
Gday. With that top “spring” clamp. It’s not exactly a spring clamp at all. It’s supposed to have a little plate and screw to tighten up the clamp 16:02
hi Use high temperature o rings . Seems like the factory did not . H/temp o rings will not go hard . All plastic water fittings / manifolds all eventually fail .
Issues with Mits-Fix. You arn’t the first and won’t be the last! Oh and don’t worry about him hating you, he’s still pissy at me from close to a decade ago and still mentions it on facebook regularly…talk about personal issues 😂. Good job on the dash! Another issue sorted and one step closer to having it back to normal!

I thought that too... as long as the new ones are made as the same material as the heater core, it'd work a treat. Obvs you don't want steel heater core pipes if the heater core is aluminium...
@@MotoringBoxTV I don't think the large flanges are critical just a couple of appropriate sized rubber grommets in the firewall should be fine. All that seems necessary are the 2x 90* bends that look to be about 20mm diameter.
Hi Shaun, its good that you are getting in some practice on dash removal, as you like me own a BA/ BF Falcon. The heaters on these cars fail as well. I had to take the dash out of my BF only to find that the actuator rod wasn't broken, so i installed the new one anyway. I had to put the dash back in with no working heater as i was in a mates workshop. This excersize in futility took me 7 hrs. By the way the dash is bloody heavy and you will need a hand to lift it out. Also one of those heater hose clips is not a spring clip. Hope you have a happy Xmas mate, cheers from NZ. Phil
I always refresh the coolant in my old cars and always run the heater each time I take them out in the hope this will preserve the heater core. Fingers crossed. 🤞
Hold up that second clamp going into the firewall isn't a spring clamp yo, it's missing the screw and the little rectangle piece with 2 holes that the 'wire' hooks through. same as 80's toyotas use
Someone hating you when they have never met you and that has presumably been done no wrong by you is somewhat illogical. Those plastic elbows I would have been inclined to see if a radiator place could make new ones out of metal. I'd love someone to make Falcon blend door shafts out of metal. Looking forward to seeing this car finished.
Possibly a missed opportunity to make your own part. If you can model in 3d (Fusion360, Solidworks, etc), this could have been printed in ABS (printing can be outsourced)... send me the one if you'd like and I'll create a model for you.
Is this a common magna problem? My heater was leaking also so i blocked it off. Not sure if it's the core or the plastic elbow connectors . It's been like this for 8 years! One day i will look at it😢
There were foam type ones which were falling apart, so I didn't bother refitting them. It seemed to fit up fairly snug so I don't imagine it being an issue without them.

Sean I would get a radiator pressure tester and pressurise the system and see if it can hold a pressure before installing the dash.

As a mechanic there are no jobs I hate more than pulling a dash and HVAC core box. Some vehicles it takes a whole fucking day to get it all out.
Most won't even do it anymore.

I would recommend Mitsi-Bits they are a shop in sth Australia. I've never even bought anything from them but they have been so helpful when I have been annoying with questions over the years haha...they have alot if not every Mitsubishi part ever made .
I did wonder if it was for a birth, if so they'd have just turned 13 years old!
@@MotoringBoxTV plus they have build magna race cars before and raced at Bathurst in the improved production class..if you type in" improved production racing magna" into TH-cam there is some great footage that was taken from channel 10 I think.

I had to do this job twice a couple years ago on my lancer which is pretty much identical procedure. The "new" heater core I got also leaked so you can never be sure you won't have to do it again.

What a weird and unique car. Its just right up my alley. I love watching resto projects of models we never got here in the states. Its going to be a common issue trying to find parts for niche cars from across the world, whether it be price or quality but just keep your head up and do what you can. The Australian built Magna was sold in the US as a Diamanté. The Magna Ralliart was not. So if you want a odd car, they are available in the US.

Brings back distant memories of having to replace a heater flap (a $10 part) right inside the HAVC box on a Lotus Excel. Lotus back then had all individual dials and switches and very few bulky connectors and of course mobile phone cameras didn't exist so everything had to be labelled as it came out. Remarkably it all went back together with no issues but took almost 2 sold days. Looking forward to if/when the heater balance shaft fails on by Falcon BF. Only problem is I'm 35 years older now...
You can come and do my BA air mix shaft for practice 😂 it broke the other day and it's stuck on full cold (lucky it's summer!).

Great video Sean!! With getting rare and neat non existent parts, have you ever thought of going down the 3D scan and print route? Maybe you could even borrow the parts that you can’t get and get them scanned and printed and then get the scan files saved onto a usb stick in case you need to replace any of them?
Hi Sean, it is very unfortunate that you are not receiving adequate customer support with your purchased items. Australia Post is also a joke, going by my experience; delivery taking two weeks for an item 10 kms away. Regardless, it's great that you are repairing issues such as dash out/heater core jobs; IMO more than a back yard DIY'er would of done. Great work mate!
Mind you, two weeks for a delivery is lightning fast when you live in Perth. Post must be storing the stuff rather than deliver it.

I have to do a similar thing - something in my BA has come adrift and you can hear it rattling when you switch to windscreen demister!
@@MotoringBoxTV Yeah, my footwell vent is permanently shut and windscreen marginal at best. Apparently mixer shaft failure is common among the BA derivatives.
It's a real pain in the rear job. It took me 8 hours to do mine. Good luck.
Whata afterthought 😳. Using plastic 'O' ringed heater pipes is a recipe for disaster!? I personally would of soldered alloy pipes to the existing core? 🤔

Well done mate, huge job and tackled well, another tip is to use zip lock bags and mark them, jas saved me countless times when looking for that screw that went somewhere 🤔
That cubby hole to replace the ashtray is what my TL Magna has. To replace the lighter, it has a socket inside the console bin. There's also a second socket between the rear seat and the door which is not in the manual. Especially useful for my 12V compressor! I suspect Mitsubishi was loading the 'features' in to make up for the ugly looks.

The Magna dash is far easier to pull apart than a than a Holden VY.
Another great video Sean & at least it'll help those who maybe in the same boat. You might have to hit up a couple of Mitsubishi wreckers in Brisvegas for other parts or just go see them to see if you can scrounge around.
I’ve done a couple of VYs and the dash removal wasn’t too bad, the V6 heater box removal was ok also but the V8 heater box is an absolute nightmare because there are bolts so close the the engine and trying to get your hands in there ended with many cuts and scratches and much much more swearing
@@knight2425 I always broke the centre console plastics which was always a pain. Thank god for decent Holden wreckers! I have a VY series I S V6 and a VY series I S with the optional LS1 which is now my new project. I'm lucky that the heater box in the LS1 is good but the best find I got was 2 of the optional smokers pack which the connector is there for straight connection. The smokers pack was a $360 option back in the day. The swearing continues on both utes lol.
@@1969Risky I had a VY Calais V6 and a VY LS1 project car, the project car got all the Calais goodies including the dual zone climate control unit hence the dashboards out and I didn’t break anything. Like I said the V6 was a dream to work on but the V8 was a nightmare, the dashboard removal isn’t a small job by any means but it’s all straight forward
@@knight2425 I restored the V6 in 2015 & now late 2022 I'm restoring the V8. The difference between the years tracking down panels/trim is so different now. years ago it was easy but now it's hard to find good condition parts/trim at a good price. I'm in the throes of doing an OTR & adding the SS sailplane endcap with the 3rd brake light. I'm tired of idiots sitting on my ass & when I brake they don't know until it's nearly too late.
I know it is too late now, but I would have put a copper or ali sleeve in each pipe.
That top heater hose clamp isnt a spring clamp, its missing a screw
I had 2004 vrx 5 speed auto was a great car but they are crazy thirsty. I always thought it'd be huge fun with a 5mt. Great to see you saving such a unique car. 👍👍
The auto model tends to drink more fuel than the manual.
Manual's can get as low as 6.6L per 100km.

It's just about paying attention to the instruction manual.
It specifically says that to get the best fuel economy, you need to keep rev's below 2000rpm.
Drive with a light foot too.
If you keep the car at 70km/h for say 500km in 5th gear, might be surprised at what it will show you.
Also Sports and VR-X better on fuel thanks to the more free flowing exhaust. The upgraded 6G74 engine became standard on all later TJ's, minus the free flowing exhaust.

Can I suggest fitting a tube internal to each side of the broken bits and epoxy them both together, might be better and stronger than the plastic weld.
I'd get in touch with 'Eastern Ranges Motors,' formally Magna's R Us. Speak to Aaron or Michael. Very knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. They carry quite a few spare parts. Much better service than Mitsfix.

Use high temperature o rings . Seems like the factory did not . H/temp o rings will not go hard .
All plastic water fittings / manifolds all eventually fail .

Surely for those heater core barbs asking prices you could just ditch the plastic and get some metal barbs welded on the core for a permanent solution.
I thought that too... as long as the new ones are made as the same material as the heater core, it'd work a treat. Obvs you don't want steel heater core pipes if the heater core is aluminium...
Metal could work, they'd need to have those flange things welded on too which surely wouldn't be hard.
@@MotoringBoxTV I don't think the large flanges are critical just a couple of appropriate sized rubber grommets in the firewall should be fine. All that seems necessary are the 2x 90* bends that look to be about 20mm diameter.

Hi Shaun, its good that you are getting in some practice on dash removal, as you like me own a BA/ BF Falcon. The heaters on these cars fail as well. I had to take the dash out of my BF only to find that the actuator rod wasn't broken, so i installed the new one anyway. I had to put the dash back in with no working heater as i was in a mates workshop. This excersize in futility took me 7 hrs. By the way the dash is bloody heavy and you will need a hand to lift it out. Also one of those heater hose clips is not a spring clip. Hope you have a happy Xmas mate, cheers from NZ. Phil
I always refresh the coolant in my old cars and always run the heater each time I take them out in the hope this will preserve the heater core. Fingers crossed. 🤞
Hold up that second clamp going into the firewall isn't a spring clamp yo, it's missing the screw and the little rectangle piece with 2 holes that the 'wire' hooks through. same as 80's toyotas use

I would get to fittings Brazed onto the new core that way it will never ever leak again plastic is just a bad bad idea.

Those plastic elbows I would have been inclined to see if a radiator place could make new ones out of metal.
I'd love someone to make Falcon blend door shafts out of metal.

Possibly a missed opportunity to make your own part. If you can model in 3d (Fusion360, Solidworks, etc), this could have been printed in ABS (printing can be outsourced)... send me the one if you'd like and I'll create a model for you.
I replaced the heater core pipes on a KJ Verada I use to own, big job but done it over the xmas break.

Is this a common magna problem? My heater was leaking also so i blocked it off. Not sure if it's the core or the plastic elbow connectors . It's been like this for 8 years! One day i will look at it😢

One of the hose clamps you used needs a screw in it, it's not the spring clip type.

Did you clean the dust out? There was a lot. I’m not good with removing that stuff and leaving it dusty so tell me you did it and I will be fine.

Heater core can be removed without removing the dash removal of glove box is needed & YES I have done it, it is a common fault..
Degassing the aircon system yes?
Yes & regasing with hychill r134a is rubbish & is being phased out.
Hey Sean, wasn't there Rubber seals in between the the heater core pipes and the firewall?
There were foam type ones which were falling apart, so I didn't bother refitting them. It seemed to fit up fairly snug so I don't imagine it being an issue without them.
