The latest 2020 LS 500 is the best Lexus yet in terms of comfort and opulence, but it also has a new platform and a new twin-turbo V6 engine. In today's video, a review of the 2020 Lexus LS 500 Inspiration Series, Tom drives the flagship Lexus four-door, looking into its dynamics, practicality and value for money.

    Wow! The designers at Lexus sure don't hold back. What stands out to me is the level of detail and being able to find suitable alternative materials, as opposed to defaulting to piano glass. Well done Lexus.

    The great thing is, in 5-10 years time, mortals can buy this car and know they can enjoy it with very few if any worries. By comparison, a 5-10 year old Luxury German competitor are reg flag no go zones for the average buyer who will end up in tears. That aside, the new LS just has more styling sparkle inside and out than its current competitors, esp when you compare A8 and 7 Series.

      I do too, but it needs bright colour (more silver tone) wheels, the dark wheels don't really suit it as much. Those wheels would look great on a pearl white exterior.

    I feel the LS and G90 are probably one of the best looking cars in this segment, and I would puck this over the s class and 7 series just cos of the looks and it's kind of a bargain same with the g90

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The G90 is so avant-garde with those wheels, that grille, those rear lights… so avant-garde that I think it might be too much for most. The LS strikes a pretty good balance between some radical shapes and some familiar lines.

    I really can't explain how much I love this car! It actually represents the perfect example of luxurious and prestigious giant sedan which enables you to save money in the long run as far as running costs! I sincerely hope to buy a hugely depreciated LS within 6 years (at the moment I own a BMW 3 series MY 19)
    Great review as always! I also hope you're feeling good during these quite tiresome times! Peace 😁

    The thumbnail pic and the exterior shots of this this car are absolutely stunning. The interior detailing is equally on par. I wish they made a coupe version of this to have a more driver focused car rather than a chauffeur type.

    The new LS makes the 7 Series and the S Class look dated on the outside and inside, especially the inside of the LS looks like the work of art.
    Aside from look and feel (subjective)
    The LS has proved it is more reliable and last longer down the road. LS owners buy and keep. The LS hold its value much better than any premium luxury class brands regardless of price range.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that there is a sense of longevity to the Lexus that is missing at times in European rivals.

    • @briansukhu4392
      @briansukhu4392 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Longevity and reliable are great traits but people who shop in this segment do not keep cars for very long at all.
      As long as the German marques are reliable enough to last for the short period of time their owners keep them for the owners really don't care.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dropping $200k on any car is absolutely major. What draws you to the LS over the others?

    • @aadi8568
      @aadi8568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@chasingcars well mainly because it's more interesting, the rivals are a little plain. The interior and exterior design is superior to the rivals. And the ride and handling is similar and a slightly cheaper price tag too.

    • @aadi8568
      @aadi8568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @James Franko I don't find the interior better, but worse. It creaks. And the design is meh, whereas the ls is lot better looking on the inside and outside. Agreed that it is bigger, but not by too much

    • @ali-fq7nw
      @ali-fq7nw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @James Franko s class is mor luxury and better in almost every thing but you gonna get a heart attack you cant keep the s class for 10 years, the maintenance is really hard, the real cost is much more than 120k

  • @Soh90

    This sedan is hugely underrated in this segment. It is by far the best looking in its class and at only a few grand more than a G90, the Lexus gives you opulent luxury at a “decent” price with the brand cache to go with it. Many don’t know what Genesis is, but Lexus IS a bonafide luxury brand and I would definitely buy this thing if I had the coin... but I don’t, so, yeah.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't get the G90 in Australia, but the value argument still holds for the LS - it's about $70k more affordable than a similarly specified Audi A8 55 TFSI.

    *Emissions.* We've just had this 'Emissions' excuse from the likes of Porsche 718, who ditched the old 6-pot in favour of a 4-pot turbo, citing that Porsche did this for emissions reasons, even though the 991 still had a 6-pot, and Porsche has 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines in various guises. After the sales disaster that was the 4-pot 718 Boxster/Cayman .. Porsche have now launched the new 718 GT4, GTS and Spyder with the 6-pot. Strange that!!!

    Great review, and the Inspiration series vehicle is stunning on the interior and the exterior. I have chosen Lexus LS for my sedan needs for decades. But when it came time to replace my 2016 LS460, I did not choose this newly designed LS500. I miss the sound of the old V8, I don't need the extra length (the new car is 6 inches longer than the previous generation), and I don't like some of the choices in the interior (e.g. that horrible infotainment trackpad and the weird display screen in front of the front-seat passenger). I love Lexus, their reliability is incomparable, and the dealership experience is grand. I continue to drive a Lexus SUV, but they have let me down on the sedan side.

    • @SergCarReviews
      @SergCarReviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve driven and reviewed both and on some points I agree. The V8 is amazing and the LS460 I think even drives smoother than it. However it doesn’t handle anything like the new one, almost feels like a boat at times (but of an overstatement but hopefully you understand 😂). The touch pad is one of those thing that you get used to and honestly you can use the voice control most of the time and never even have to use it. Anyways hope you have a good day Robert and feel free to check out my LS460 review if you’re free :)

    *It's outrageous manufacturers are bringing out in this day and age such huge gas guzzlers **12:44** (13 Litres per 100k = 21.72 mpg) spewing out loads of monstrous CO² - I had a Mercedes 420SE V8, but now have a (W247) B200CDi AMG with Full Premium pack which kicks this in the weeds, and recently did a 90 mile journey and achieved 76.3 MPG. The engine on the new model is virtually silent and has a top speed of 140 mph, and will cruise all day in excess of 100mph, 797 Miles, and still return over 50.4 mpg as I did on a run from La Plagne (France) to UK in previous version (W246) in **14:40** Hours with 2 passengers and all ski kit etc.*

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only an outrage if in large volumes, I'd suggest. For Lexus in Australia, electric hybrid sales are around 30% and growing. Large capacity engines like this are shrinking into a more niche offer.

    • @dragondadvoodoo
      @dragondadvoodoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know that diesel is more polluted than petrol engine don't you? Diesel engine emit more harmful chemical. It just happened that CO2 is lower. But CO2 is not the concern, it is a gas of life.

    OK I just bought a 2020 Lexus LS 500 all-wheel-drive inspiration series with the specific color that goes with the inspiration series and I traded in a 2018 E400 coupe’. It was the only build of its kind in America according to Mercedes Benz so it cost around $93,000. The first thing that I would like everybody to know is that I have owned two S class Mercedes Benz. both with the equivalent executive package. So I consider myself an expert when it comes to these kind of cars. My E400 had a 23 speaker Burmeister stereo system in it. My Lexus inspiration series has a 23 speaker Mark Levinson stereo system. I know I’m going to make all the Lexus fan-boys upset but that Mark Levinson system comes nowhere close to that Mercedes-Benz Burmeister system. So instead of getting into a whole bunch of stuff that’s going to tick people off. Let me get to the bottom line if you want quality, refinement, and just pure opulence then you want the Lexus. If you’re into technology and gadgets and performance then you want the Mercedes at the end of the day Lexus is going to last. Mercedes is designed according to Mercedes Benz to trade in every 4 to 5 years and get a new one but the Lexus you can keep for 25 or 30 years if you want. I’ve had several Mercedes Benz I just got tired of going to the shop every time it had an issue which was plenty! Lexus I just drive it and change the oil they both cost $120,000 but at the end of the day I’m getting more for my money with the Lexus.

    Speaking of Lexus have you seen the Lexus prado? I'm guessing it's in the American market but wow! I think it's running an updated version of the 4.7L V8 that was in the 100s petrol V8.

      Yes - the GX. I asked the Lexus Australia MD last year whether he'd like to bring it to Australia and he was non-committal. Probably means that if they wanted to shoehorn the V8 diesel into the Prado, they could. But with the LC200 now going to six cylinders, that's really unlikely.

    Good review. I have test driven 2019 LS 500 and 2017 LS 460. LS 500 does look nice and the interior feels fancier than 460. However, I still prefer interior look of the 460.
    Overall, I did not like LS 500. When you look at the dimensions for 500, it will looks as if it has more interior leg room. But it actually feels like it has less room in the front and in the back when compared to 460. Transmission and engine felt too jerky at times. Suspensions with those run flat tires wasn’t nearly as soft as 460. And entertainment system was not practical at all. Simple functions like heated seats can now only be changed on the screen. Had to Park the car and go through a couple of different menus to figure out how to turn off the heated seats. Supposedly, Lexus wants you to use voice commands for many of those functions. The problem is that I don’t like talking when I don’t have to. I will not even consider buying LS 500.

    • @alwaysiyi272

      It's just a very, very rich sort of environment - and I don't mean rich in terms of money, but rich in terms of how sumptuous it is. As I mentioned, it is pretty extra - but if you are into that sort of old fashioned clubby vibe, it all comes together well.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for the engine - I think that is a very fair question to ask. Maybe it doesn't fit. The truth is that Toyota has never been willing to answer why they didn't use one of their own engines for the Supra. I suspect it was a cost and development time thing. Yes, Abarth/Fiat put their own engine into the ND MX-5, but that was unusual. Most of the time when a car is developed to split into two, the engine is retained.

    Firstly the original LS400 that was launched in 1989 didn't show up how behind the German marques were. It took the lead in the luxury car market, albeit ( temporarily until Mercedes launched the 2000 S Class ) at the time offering an unbeatable combination of luxury at a very competitive price for the market segment. Hitherto to its launch the Germans had relied on engineering prowess to stay ahead in the segment.
    It was never the S class killer, there is no such thing as an S Clasa killer. If it were an S class killer the S class would have been discontinued by now.
    For the record the LS400 ( original 1990 model ) and the BMW 7 Series ( second model that was launched in 1986 ) are the only two cars that have challenged the supremacy of the S Class, challenged is the operative word. They never usurped them.
    He made reference to turbo's will out last naturally aspirated engines. Turbos have a finite life span, these LS500 are not going to run like the million mile LS400 that was a naturally aspirated V8 engine.
    Saying all of this, the LS500 is by all accounts a fantastic car, but not the class leader. In it's LS400 iteration it forced the Germans during the 1990's to improve. They not just improved the surged ahead and have never looked back, the Japanese luxury marques have been left further and further behind.
    Lexus is still a very desirable luxury brand and makes very reliable luxury cars but it doesn't lead the way anymore.
    People like this person need to research their subject matter before posting reviews of cars on TH-cam. He has a right to his opinions, but that is what they are; opinions not fact.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steady on, Brian.
      1) It did show the Germans that they were behind on comfort, convenience and refinement - as you say, it took Benz 11 years to match those elements on the S-Class.
      2) Nobody suggested it was an S-Class killer. That was never Lexus's intention nor the outcome.
      3) Turbos outlasting NA engines refers to the ability to sell them new given CO2 regulations.
      4) We research and finesse all of our content. Our loyal subscribers are deeply familiar with that, and I'm afraid I don't accept your submission that we don't.
      Thanks for your comment, though!

    • @briansukhu4392
      @briansukhu4392 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chasingcars
      1) The reason why the Germans, particularly the S Class over took Lexus a decade later circa 2000, BMW circa 2002 was because the 1990's S class was launched shortly after the LS 400 was released Meeceds didn'thave sufficient time to respond with the new S Class they were going to release shortly. At the time the Germans kept their models for a decade or more, the Japanese changed things by updating virtually all of their cars every 4 years.
      Since 2000, Lexus has been left behind by Mercedes/BMW, now new entrants; Genesis are doing to Lexus what Lexus did to the Germans during the 90's. Also Audi's revival have also over shadowed Lexus. BMW and Mercedes took 10-12 years to catch up, because that was when their subsequent models were launched models that they had sufficienttime to respond to Lexus; it only took one new model, the first new model from them post LS for them to regain their leadership if the segment.
      I reiterate, the LS never showed the Germans how behind they were, it over took them, it showed Jaquar/Cadillac/Lincoln how behind they were.
      3) This segment is seeking all electric cars, something the Germans are working hard to keep up with Tesla. Lexus doesn't have an all electric car.
      3) th-cam.com/video/7f9vGA5dFj0/w-d-xo.html
      The above are S class killers, they have V8's and larger engines as well as electric options.
      4) I share you enthusiasm with Japanese cars. Their luxury lines made a dramatic impact on the luxury segment during the 90's. However, with the exception of luxury SuV market they are not the leaders anymore, they are still desirable/reliable but are no longer cutting edge
      5) at 7:56 the term; S Class Killer.
      It reiterate, it never killed the S class. The original and subsequent iteration of the LS was better than the 80' and 90's S Class but since 2000 the Germans have lead the market and have never looked back.
