- With much attention on the case and calls for public inquiry, Washtenaw County 14A District Judge Cedric Simpson and his staff determined Corey Harris has had only a Michigan state identification card since 1999 and has never obtained a driver’s license, despite statements that he had one, according to information presented during Harris’s court hearing June 5, 2024. Harris’s attorney, Dionne Webster-Cox, said he paid reinstatement fees after the May 15 hearing and was in the process of obtaining his driver’s license. He had an appointment set up with the Secretary of State for June 6, she said.

If someone asks you if you EVER had a driver’s license and you say anything except yes -> then you NEVER have a driver’s license.

What difference does it make if he posted the video or not. He should not have been driving period. He knew he didnt have a license. No license means no insurance, no tag. He has to be held responsible just as we all do if we break laws that are meant for all to follow.

After 24 years, Corey Harris FINALLY has his driver's license!!! The prosecutor dismissed the more serious charge against him afterwards and he pled to the double parking. The judge agreed to waive all of his court costs and fines for that one.

There needs to be greater penalties for people driving without licenses and suspended licenses. They usually are for lazy reasons like this one. The rest of us are paying huge premiums because people like this getting to skate around with no liability.

He lost his driving privilege and had to pay to reinstate that. There’s a difference between driving privilege and drivers license. You can have driving privilege but no license. Like people who just choose not to drive for whatever reason but there’s nothing legally preventing them from getting a license. You can also have no driving privilege and have a drivers license. You can’t drive even though you have a license until you do whatever you need to reinstate your privilege. You can also lose driving privilege in one state but still be able to drive in another state where you haven’t lost your privilege.

It's that his ability to get a MI licence or use one from another state and then drive in Michigan has been suspended.
He'd have to resolve the suspension before being able to get his driving/licensing privileges reinstated.
His arrest a few minutes after this video cut out is part of said resolution.

He has to reinstate his ability to have the privilege to drive. Without that fee being paid, he could never legally drive or apply for a driver’s license in the state of Michigan.

A better question might be why wasn't he charged with driving with no license instead of driving on a suspended license? As an adult what crime suspends your privilege to drive even though you don't have a driver's license? I know in California, if your under 18 and are caught with anything to do with alcohol and you "do not" have a driver's license you cannot apply for one until your 18th birthday but you don't have to pay a reinstatement fee to have the privilege to get a license. I speak from experience, unfortunately. Please don't think my questions mean that I somehow support this idiot, I think this guy deserves everything that's coming his way and I think the judge is more than fair

If his right-sided limp is so pronounced as to require a cane, it could be that he would not be able to switch from acceleration to braking to avoid an unexpected traffic issue. Maybe, he is too disabled to qualify for operating a vehicle.

Apparently in Michigan having driving Privileges and having a driver's license are two separate things. Someone can lose driving Privileges even though they don't have a drivers license. I guess it's for people who have an out of state drivers license. Michigan courts can't take away someone's license if they got it in another state, but they can take away the Privilege of driving in Michigan.
