I wanted to say thanks Matt for highlighting the hazards of working with resin, and I would love to see a full video on it, as I think that point needs to be driven home at every possible opportunity.
I met someone at a convention who makes custom dice sets for a living, and he says it's astounding how many people with 3D resin printers just don't seem to realize how obscenely toxic liquid resin is. And like you pointed out in this video, that's not something he said out of scare tactics. To paraphrase him: "You can absolutely do stuff like this if you want to, but understand; I do this for a living, and I have full PPE gear, a garage separate from my house to work in, and that's fitted with an air extraction system certified for a building 4 times its size. That's the MINIMUM kind of commitment you need if you want to work with this stuff safely."

A big reason people don't talk about it is that when you do, people get personally offended at the idea of safety. They'll tell you they don't care, it's not a big deal, you're just fearmongering. And it's impossible to talk about safety with resin printers without these people ruining any discussion. God forbid you tell them not to put that toxic printer in their hobby room where they paint their minis. That's when they really start to get nasty. Any kind of safety advice is treated as a personal attack. So most sensible people just take the precautions themselves and shut up.

I complained to my brother a few times because he was printing in the house. He finally stopped. Not sure why, but it's a relief not breathing that shit in anymore. He switched to filament, which is much less offensive to live around.

Yes, Jon Bernthal and Deborah Ann Woll, his costar on the Punisher show. I saw that too and it was great. I like both of them. She's like we just played D&D; just because you don't literally roll dice or have a character sheet. I have a college friend who described a coworker he had 30 some years ago. They worked on a college campus, a maintenance kind of job, as a team. So just spent their entire day walking around campus doing maintenance stuff together. My friend kept a pair of 2d10s in his pocket and they would role-play, not D&D specifically, I don't know what rule set (obviously d100, probably the original Warhammer Fantasy RPG v1 or v2) and they would just 1v1 tell stories and roll dice all through the work day.

That segment about Resin printing VS FDM printing actually was something I didn't know as someone considering getting into 3d printing. And like, obviously everyone I watched said to wear protective gear, but I figured it was more of a precaution than an actual requirement. And that knowledge has probably pushed me more towards an FDM printer for my first time over a resin printer.
I personally would love to see a video on 3d printing from you guys, especially if it covered the pros and cons of FDM vs Resin.

For Resin printing the key things are:
      Nitrile N95 gloves
A proper mask (again, there are recommended standards, what I prefer to vouch for are proper masks with proper refillable charcoal filters. Yes, the filters make it an $8 upcharge, nobody cares because your lung and brains matter a whole lot more than an $8 subscription every few months)
      A proper pair of goggles
Preferably anywhere you MIGHT get resin on your skin (such as on the underside of your arm) try and wear SOMETHING
Do not be in the room while it prints
Make sure the area it is in is well ventilated and/or has a vacuum going outside
      and that's about it.
If you just have 1 or 2 Resin printers, in a room that has an open window, then print as much as you want, but I'd recommend letting air out for at least 24 hours before "inhabiting" the space, and the smell will stick around for over a week.
The problem is, when you have what appears to be 28 resin printers in 1 room, with a man having to perform maintenance or work on the resin printers in there, even with proper ventilation, that man ABSOLUTELY needs every bit of PPE he can get.
I would HIGHLY recommend starting off with FDM printing, and so long as you stick to the more regular filaments (such as PLA), you should be perfectly fine to print, and even inhabit the room it is in. The prints are lighter, cheaper, less consumables are used, easier to do, less effort, and far more durable, in exchange for less detail, but with newer printers even that "less detail" doesn't seem to matter much anymore.
Note: There are a LOT of TH-camrs who often times show themselves not wearing PPE while doing a video with an active resin printer, or handling resin products. The vast majority of these TH-camrs have acknowledged, multiple times to their audiences that what they're doing is highly inadvisable, however, it's kind of hard to talk and be heard clearly with a mask on during a video, and it also is a mood killer if every time they do a video with resin printing, they have to take a brief pause to address the issue. I disagree with what they've done, but it is what it is.
Source: a sauced up boyo who's been doing FDM printing for 10+ years and Resin for 5+ years, but has done practically 0 resin printing over the past 3 years because of how much of a hassle it is, and how dangerous it is to the human ecosystem (and even just literally nature)

Some things to add to resin printing. Min air replacement per printer, what hepa really is, types of clean rooms by category.
A grateful working example would be start out with second hand smoke, then show what a scented candles do.
Also fdm needs filtration as well. Plastic will float in the air. A diy is a box fan, 22 by 22 inch filter (sorry I only know freedom units 😉) and some painters tape. To be honest with all the gunk in the air I have been doing the diy long before the printing.
Much luv to all the MWG gang.

Gas mask, thick rubber gloves only printing on the porch/balcony when the weather is fine while treating the substance and everything it touches like a dangerous virus or toxin - All that‘s missing is the hazmad suit.
I‘ve exchanged the isopropanol alcohol with a specialized cleaning fluid which apparently isn’t hazardous, we‘ll see, the resin is plant based (still as toxic as other resins due to the chemicals that make it photo sensitive)
We were kind of shocked when a student from our club told us he printed in his bedroom without ventilation. It was really hard for us to make him take this seriously

It needs to be said about safety. They've been out for a while, and I'm sure there were many living in apartments who think simply opening a window is fine. Even if one of these printers say its fine for indoor use, and not resin, I wouldn't. This is serious respiratory aggravation if not done with preparation. I can see many who buy a 3D printer, maybe not even savvy with woodworking or anything similar. Just, I want to print a cool demon. I plug it in and the STL makes it go.
With that said, how many are even aware and handle already printed minis properly? Few and far between. How many understand how bad receipt paper is? Do not put it in your mouth and wash your hand after touching. It's toxic as hell.
It isn't that difficult to run a vent hose to the window and set up an extractor fan. There are ways to do it.

I'm curious about all this 3D printing and resin risk stuff.
I do some at home, but only use water-washable resin because it's much more easier to handle and doesn't smell much at all. I'm wondering how it compares to regular resin on the safety front. Because outside of smelling nearly nothing and not needing alcohol to clean prints, I'm not sure how much safer it is in the end!
If that comparison could be brought up in a future video about safety with resin, that would be great!

Everything is in enclosures with constant venting outside, full facemask with dual carbon filters that I change monthly, always glove up and a uv light to clean the area should there be any spills along with an air quality detector to let me know if I need to open the windows for a while. Don't think there is much else I could be doing but always good to hear more details, particularly from someone who does it as a business.

Gotten into resin printing myself and it's easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of sometimes conflicting information about it. Completely agree with "do not 3D print miniatures at home." I work in industrial automation, and what most people don't realize is resin 3D printing is literally micro-manufacturing. Manufacturers have countless safety processes to mitigate the risks of using harmful cancer causing chemicals, and they don't always get it right. What does some wargamer know that billion dollar companies don't?

Please DO the resin safety video. This topic is really not well covered, manufacturer ignore the problem, influencers are usually very discreet (I understand why and don't blame them) and so few resources are available when you want to learn more about what is really needed. It's sad to see so many people printing resin in their dining room with kids running around....

When we were kids (late 80s, early 90s) and got thrown out by our parents for being stuck inside all day playing roleplaying games (not D&D but other titles), well, well kept playing, one took on the role of game master and just opened up a premise and a narrative and off we where, climbing around on the playgrounds and what not while still bouncing that narrative back and forth, so you see this, hear that, smell some thing, what do you do? Do I have this, do I know how to do do that? Yes, no, well you try, yeah, you've been doing that your whole life and so on and on.. Roleplaying, it's not the published books, not the developed setting, not even the random number generators, it's the creative interaction between the participants as they try to entertain each other, because that's what it is all about, to entertain each other.

Weird question perhaps, but do you think kids are as into stories as we are? Like, participatory storytelling, shared narratives? I get a feeling that wargames and RPGs are mainly a thing for people over 30, or even older. People who grew up playing outside completely in the analogue domain. Or who played RPGs around a table. With nothing more than their imaginations (and perhaps some minis) to make up their games. All the kids I see in the 12-20 range are only on screens. I don't know if they're as creative or imaginative as kids used to be. Or as interested in sharing or contributing to stories or narrative play. Maybe that's just me being an old man yelling at the clouds (I'm mid-40s). But how do you see wargames and RPGs resonating with younger folks?

They definitely resonate, although kids will tend to power game more often as they see that as the most fun way to play (that’s what I was like as a kid).
As we get older we realize that flawed characters are more interesting.

Clickbait titles and thumbnails with the aim of selling a product always make me tear up, so I completely understand.
