Awesome interview. Although i waited until the end but still didn’t hear Dr. Habermas’s two minute 6 plus 1 argument… he referenced it many times but it seemed that the conversation went down rabbit holes ( but good ones). Without coming back to “OK, Dr. habermas can you pls give my listeners the 6 plus 1 two minute response for the resurrection before the plane lands?”
Gary's various arguments for the resurrection are deeply persuasive. They can be used by all Christians. I especially appreciate his references to the Shroud of Turin and to near death experiences. But his arguments do not directly support his particular variant of Christianity: Sola Scriptura, Sola Fides, etc. I would be interested to hear him on that topic: why is he a Southern Baptist evangelical, not a Catholic, an Orthodox, an Anglican, etc.
Not everyone needs "religion", but we all need a saving relationship with Jesus, He is the Author of Life 🙏. But I'm not advocating for Cowboy Christians, we need each other as the Body of Christ to be strong in the faith, undergirded by evidence. Even Jesus challenged the Pharisees that even if they didn't believe in Him, to believe the Evidence of the Miracles they witnessed (no such rhing as mass hallucinations btw).
Possibly because if you are not prepared, the barrage of negativity and persuasive counter-arguments will make sure you never do that again. At least online, where most of us won't survive for long. I believe the best way to share the Gospel, is face to face. One soul at a time. It is really hard to be rude and nasty to someone face to face. Online, you just see text. If you meet me, you'll see my smile and we'll chat about lots of things, have a laugh - you'll get to know me as a very nice guy that really cares. I do not get to show that in a comment field. That being said, I truly subscribe to what Gary said about hockey and apologetics. Gloves off, tables flipped, expose the hypocrisy (while admitting to our own never-ending supply of same) and pinning the atheists to the wall demanding that they actually DEFEND their position - and do not ever let them get away with a Dillahunty Dodge: "I am not convinced". WHY ARE YOU NOT CONVINCED? DEFEND YOUR POSITION! I usually just reply "I am not convinced that you are not convinced"... :D
Habermas failed to answer a single question directly. Rather he ducked the question and answered a question of his own choosing. So I examined his "6 minimal facts". 1) Jesus was crucified ... Very possible, even likely that some preacher/teacher called Jesus was crucified, Even so, not a proven fact. 2) Jesus' followers thought they saw a risen Jesus. ... Maybe 2 of his followers has some sort of vision/apparition (no physical appearance) "Thought I saw something" isn't a fact. 3) Followers were willing to die for their belief... maybe a fact, but does not prove a resurrection... many people throughout history have been martyred for their faith without seeing a resurrection. 4) & 5) Paul and James claimed to have seen a risen Jesus ... Claims are not facts. 6) Gospel starts soon after the event ..... So what?? proves nothing. Ultimately the "Minimal facts" are very weak and prove absolutely nothing.
Snort. Your personal incredulity is the thing that is weak. 1. Jesus dying is a fact. Verified fact. Outside of the Bible fact. 2. Jesus followers ..."Thought". Dude, over 500 people saw him, walking and talking and eating for over a month. You obviously didn't look into this enough. 3. True. But it's a strong evidence that they thought it was true. 4. Claims ARE facts, if they are facts. You disbelieve them. And you're allowed to. But don't call facts as non-facts, unless you have DIRECT EVIDENCE that their claims are false. Were you there? No. So you either take them at their word, or you don't. But dont you dare claim that their claim is non-factual. 6. It's written - court tested - legally verified written documentation of the situations in question. It adds to the pool of evidence. Ultimately, your logic fails, and very clearly demonstrates The Fallacy of Personal Incredulity. Which again, you can choose to not believe these witnesses. But you should be honest about that instead of saying "the evidence is weak and proves nothing."
That is just stupid, Paul! 1. Jesus was crucified and died from the ordeal. That is not a disputed fact, because we do have very early sources outside Christianity. We have discovered the Pilate stone which proves the existence of Pilate, and we know that Caiphas is a real historical person - BECAUSE WE HAVE HIS BONES! This is not a disputed fact, unless you are a muslim apologist or just plain ignorant. NO SCHOLAR IN RELEVANT FIELDS dispute this FACT, not even Richard Dawkins (who is NOT a scholar in a relevant field, but a very outspoken atheist). To quote Ehrman: you are looking foolish by denying this FACT. 2. That is just speculation on your part, and you do not have any evidence to support it. On the contrary, we again have sources outside Christianity that verify that the followers of Jesus thought they saw the risen Jesus. Paul, which also is a real historical person that no relevant scholars dispute existed, lists the 12 disciples, himself and FIVE HUNDRED MEN AT ONE TIME - which means that easily a thousand people saw the risen Jesus simultaneously because in a patriarchal society they did not count women and children in general. And since mass hallucinations is a move myth, this could not have happened unless IT REALLY HAPPENED! Again, you are speculating here. It is pure nonsense and wishful thinking in order to defend your world view. You are deceiving yourself. 3. It is not a problem to die for something you believe in. But NOBODY will die for something they KNOW is a lie. Except for the odd mentally ill - we could think that if one person was martyred. But that is not the case - even the BROTHER of Jesus was martyred for his faith, which he got after the resurrection! And he KNEW Jesus personally! How do you explain away that one? 4 and 5. No, but their conduct and what happened to them attest to their beliefs. It might not be hard evidence, but you cannot just ignore these claims. They are part of a bigger picture that points in a specific direction. Just as scientists cannot prove how a star is formed, the sum of the evidences gives us a full (enough) picture to say how it happens with certainty. You are, again, rejecting evidence that points in a direction you do not like. Which is stupid to do, because you do not live your life that way! If the meteorologist tells you it may rain, you bring an umbrella... 6. Yes it does. It is eyewitness testimony by contemporary people, thus it is trustworthy. The later the sources, the less reliable they become. You are only saying this so that you can reject the Gospels a priori. Your whole post reaks of a priori adherences to a non-theistic world view. You reject evidence without giving any good reason for ANY of it, and you are nothing but an internet sceptic parroting what you have heard from the likes of Dawkins, Hitchens and their compadres. It is NOT about evidence in your case - you do not believe because you do not WANT to believe. That's all. That is why you HAVE to reject ANY argument and ANY evidence that does not agree with your world view. Prove me wrong by giving GOOD arguments against the claims. Do not be a stupid Dillahunty dodger that says "I am not convinced" without giving sound, good REASONING _why_ you are not convinced. Prove that you exist, and that you are not just an atheistic chatbot run by a dodgy piece of AI. Because I am not convinced that you are real. See how easy that was? Try to refute that statement...
EXAMINING THE EVIDENCE OF JESUS CHRIST! These are the "undisputed" historical facts amongst critics, scholars, and skeptics. This is not an analysis to make you believe the claims. This is a reference to historical documents and information that are widely agreed upon. To say that this information is mythological or fictitious is to deny history itself. Here's the question: WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THESE FACTS? 1.) Jesus died by crucifixion (AD 30-33). 2.) His disciples had experiences that they believed were appearances of the risen Jesus, to the point of even being willing to die for it. 3.) Because of their message and belief that Jesus was raised from the dead, it is the event that has turned the world upside down religiously (2.6 billion Christians in the world as of 2023). 4.) The Resurrection proclamation can be tracked down immediately after the crucifixion by sources inside and outside the Bible. 5.) James (the brother of Jesus), who thought he was crazy, became Christian after he believed he had experienced the risen Jesus. 6.) The apostle Paul (who hated Christians the most) became Christian after he believed he had experienced the risen Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:1-8, AD 53-55). THE BEST EXPLANATION OF THESE FACTS IS THAT GOD RAISED JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD!
