    The REL (Re-Engineered Lasers) rule for the Enforcer counters RFL and reduces the effectiveness of CR to -1 for criticals instead of -2 fyi. Thank you for the review. I have so many mechs I'm still debating if I need these packs

    Okay, I’ll bite. Went to GenCon with my two young boys. Battletech was the first game we saw being played (I knew of it, they didn’t). We played a tutorial and got to see tons of people playing it with painted models. So…
    We spent way too much money with a starter box, 4-5 boxes of additional minis, and without looking at the cards we took turns picking which ones we wanted for our forces based on looks.
    Now we have large forces with our own paint schemes and we play based on points.
    And your vids are great man. Keep it up!

    Yeah, the template based LOS in AS is an optional rule. Under standard rules, your LOS is real LOS so the plumes are a bad idea.

    • @Thearmedpainter
      @Thearmedpainter  ปีที่แล้ว

      No one is going to force los based on plumes lol. That’s a real easy conversation to have before a game. This goes both ways where you could do conversions to minis for an advantage.
      Page 170 talks about why you’d use the practical line of sight rules and that all makes sense. If someone wanted to “not” do that because they want to have an advantage or force a disadvantage on minis modeled for “cool factor” that’s not someone I’d personally play with. That’s a gamer more worried about winning rather than the experience.
      In two years of playing in Southern Assault tournaments I’ve not ran into anyone that was that big of a stickler for the rules. Quite the contrary. In my experiences all of the tournament participants were very casual and loose with stuff as they were looking for a fun time not just a win. My two cents.

    • @warlok363
      @warlok363 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Armed Painter well optional is still optional. Unless you are explicitly calling out the optional rules beforehand a player would be well in their right to call foul. All the rest of AS:CE assume real LOS. Even under the proxy rules they say to try and use a mech of roughly the right size. Honestly I'd think that real LOS simplifies a lot of gameplay, why would anyone want to add more ambiguity ?
      I'm not alone on this either. I've seen AS tournament rules formats call out jumping posed mechs saying essentially "yeah you can play it but it's still real LOS so you'd be at a disadvantage.
      And on top of that even with the recent errata the templates are wonky with the table for the sizes didn't match the pictures of the templates and lose pics aren't the actual size the say they are.
      Very tacked on rules kind of feel.

    Those mold lines have really been slowing me down... I think you're right, I should just start painting and needed to hear that.
    I'm assuming Hsien is a Chinese word; the planet wasn't originally Capellan, but its founders were Asian and it's an actual last name pronounced like "yen" with a "sh" in front. It's an older transliteration; nowadays it'd be Xian.

      My favorite artist, Lester Bursley, once told me about how he won a Golden Daemon and the entry had mold lines he missed. He won an award….lol!
      If you aren’t worried about nit picky judging and paint competition, just get those bad boys going! I have plenty of minis for my mech collection with mold lines I missed, most people don’t notice and those who do are looking for small things to nit pick about.
      Don’t let perfection stand in the way or progress I say.

      I hated the mold lines, till I found out about using a brass parts cleaning brush. Wooden handle, brass bristles, looks like a big toothbrush. I bought them on ebay. Clean and scrape with a xacto knife, then brush, Magic!! It does not get everywhere, but it's such a improvement.

    • @ShimmeringSword
      @ShimmeringSword ปีที่แล้ว

      What I do rather than try to fix all the mold lines, is just put some amount of time into them. You could spend an hour or more doing sculpt work to perfectly fix everything, but with just 10-20mins per mech you can easily knock them down by at minimum 50% if not more. Takes the edge off the worst ones that would otherwise catch a wash right down the middle of a clean surface. Definitely shows uncleaned vs minimally cleaned.
      That said yes, painted is better than not painted.

    Those Penetrators are definitely a case of detail being flattened in Alpha Strike. The 4D has a pair of ER large lasers and 6 medium pulse lasers, while the 6T replaces the pulses with ER medium lasers, a targeting computer and 2 heat sinks. Better range profile but not as accurate or as much raw damage basically works out the same. There's a few other Alpha Strike cards that came in the new boxes where there's two variants and they wind up functionally identical

    I'm going to split this and the Eridani box between a Northwind Highlanders and Kell Hounds force, make a company of each from these new boxes and the random salvage box mechs I got laying around. I think painting up several companies worth of different mercenary units might be a fun change of pace over the next year.

    It can be hard to spot but the Enforcer is a different sculpt. Differernt JJ locations, and both arm guns have enhanced details to show they're ER and LBX upgrades.
    The rule for this generation of merc packs is: One new design, 2 variants, one unchanged. All reposed, one jumping.

    Graet review, with the Hatchetman the caseis essentially useless outside of campaign play as you take an additional point of damage on the ammo explosion, and with only 2 str the hatchetman dies either way.

    • @lorcannagle
      @lorcannagle ปีที่แล้ว

      As of the Commander's edition a hit roll of 12 also generates a crit, so there's an edge case for surviving an ammo explosion there.

    30 bucks for 4 mechs is the same price range as GW 40k troop box sets where you get 10 minis for $65. Yes, you need more GW miniatures overall to play GW games, but if we are paying GW prices for miniatures themselves, we should get a product that is the same overall quality as GW kits, in material and design.
    While the newer box sets from CGL are great and a definitive upgrade from the earlier KS and AGOAC/Beginner Box sets, they are still a pain to clean, especially when you have mold slippage to fix, or as AP has noted in this video himself when you have to recreate panel lines.

    • @Thearmedpainter
      @Thearmedpainter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A single character mini for a gw game is what, minimum $35? For BT you need FAR less and you don’t need hundreds of dollars in books. Comparing the mechs to space marines isn’t a fair 1:1 comparison. Your box of mechs isn’t 10 variants of the same dude.
      The mold lines do suck, but I have plenty of mechs I missed lines on or ignored and most people don’t notice. The issue for me on this front is on the slippage on some mechs, which Iwm has had in metal minis as well, which make fixing near impossible and the material itself. It tends to curl rather than scrap away which is annoying.
      The plastics are like 50% the price of the metals though. It’s still more affordable. If the market en masse felt the prices were too high CGL would notice.
      Finally. The overall cost to play the game cannot be understated. If I’m a new comer with minimal dollars to invest in a minis game and I have a GW gamer and a BT gamer trying to get me into their respective game, the overall $$$ for entry is a major component.
      My two cents of course but as someone who did commission work for near a decade (almost exclusively with gw minis) and also as a former GW fanboy for about the same amount of time (ie: I’m very familiar with their quality), I don’t find the price or minis quality that big of an issue. Sales seem to support that as well.

    • @MikeKnell2884
      @MikeKnell2884 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Thearmedpainter
      Yes, GW single character miniatures are $35. They know that people who are unable or unwilling to kitbash them from regular troops are going to pay that. GW customers are crazy like that.
      CGL's equivalent were the premium mechs from Creative Juggernaut that cost $25 for a figure that was still significantly under the quality of GW single character models.
      And I have mentioned already that I agree with you that you need to spend less money to play Battletech, then main line GW wargames. For Kill Team I need the same number of minis as I would use for Alpha Strike.
      And yes, I can compare mechs to space marines, because you get 8 models (4 lances) made of lesser quality plastic for a price that is $5 less than 10 models made of higher quality plastic, crisper details and more weapon options for your choosing.
      I was even generous in the price comparisons and used prices from the official GW store. You can find GW miniatures for 20%-30% less all over the internet.
      I spent more than double on BT miniatures then I spent on WH40k, and I worked on all of them myself, for both of the games.
      Each and every time I had a lousier experience working on BT minis than WH40K, spending a lot more time cleaning them and fixing mold issues.
