    • @paulpijnenburg5449
      @paulpijnenburg5449 4 ปีที่แล้ว +275

      Rachael Doran I’m not to sure about them being everythings best friend lol. But the maternal/ caring for infants instinct of canines is indeed amazing.
      If a pack of lions find a cub they don’t know, they’ll kill it. If a pack of wolfs or african wild dogs find a strange pup they’ll most likely raise it like their own.
      When an endangered zoo animal gets rejected by its mother they usually use a dog as a foster mom.
      I think this comes from the alfa pair system most canines have. All females raise the alfa females pups together. this is also the reason dogs have false pregnancies, all go in heat and produce milk at the same time, regardless of being pregnant or not.
      Dogs just like to raise puppies, doesn’t matter if its their own or even their own species!

      Good for you! Where I live they kill everything - including the baby raccoons if they are orphaned & worse yet you are not allowed to adopt them to rehabilitate! Now they are saying they carry a form of distemper - if true, so how does that apply to ALL of them & warrant killing healthy ones? It"s absolutely ridiculous & a huge moneymaker for animal control. The only thing they will do is release one on another part of your property if it"s caused problems. What is one person's nuisance is another ones' joy.

    Raccoons in the wild are beautiful, intelligent, resourceful, and clean. They will even wash their food before eating, and their hands after. It is only when their habitat is subsumed by human habitats that they become a nuisance animal. If threatened or infected with disease, they can be dangerous. But, that’s true of any animal, even us. As with any wild creature, keeping them as pets is not recommended. The potential for harm far outweighs the potential for success.
    As for the dog, this behavior is not unusual. Many dogs have raised some rather interesting “pups”. I personally met a German Shepherd, on a safari park in Texas, who raised a lion cub that had been abandoned by its mother. Never heard the lion bark, so I have no idea how they understood each other so well.

    • @duke9173
      @duke9173 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to agree with you on most of your comment. The washing of food is a myth. For coons food has to pass 3 tests. Look, smell and feel before eating. A raccoons paws are almost as sensitive to touch as a dogs nose is to smell. A large amount of their food can come from rivers and streams. If a food not in water is found and water is close they will take it there to “wash” which helps increase their paw sensitivity. I still would love to have one but know it’s like dating a stripper. Fun for a while but ends in heartache.

      @@duke9173 Cool! I didn't know about the hypersensitive touch. Thank you. I had actually seen coons engaged in this behavior, when I was younger. So, I believed the "washing their food" thing. But, how does putting it in water improve their sense of touch?

    • @duke9173
      @duke9173 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oldsoldier4209 since they find food in water and under rocks it feels familiar and also how water make our fingers wrinkled they are more sensitive. Haha lol, right? Before my kitty Molly passed away, she used to get her food eaten by raccoons all the time. She would just sit there and watch them eat it. She would never bother them, and they would never bother her...she'd just let them eat her food, and as soon as they were done, she'd climb into her bed and go to sleep, like it was no big deal.

      These guys were adorable.
      Have seen many many raccoons in my town over the years. One late summer night, around 30 years ago, some noise in the laundry room woke me up. Found a few raccoons in there, eating out of a giant bag of cat food they'd torn into. It wasn't the only thing they'd ripped: my 3 sliding screen doors had long raccoon-size tears in them, they'd made with their claws to get into the house. (Wouldn't have been surprised if they knew how to use a pair of wire-cutters, though.) Clever critters. Loud claps and yelling at them did nothing. They looked at me like, "Lady, you got anything more than that? 'Cause, you know, you're gonna have to work harder to get us out of this yummy cat food." Yeah, had to push them out with a broom. They also devoured the grapes on my little grape arbor. They did teach me how to be a little more clever than them.

    Only time I've seen an insane/vicious raccoon is when my dog cornered one in the back yard, he snapped n freaked out, other then that they usually try to get away without trouble

    • @Nirrrina
      @Nirrrina 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not surprising. They're incredibly wild & vicious when cornered. Plus mom's with young babes are even worse if you come near their babies.
      But that's understandable then. I still wouldn't mess with a wild one up close. But if you stay back you're generally fine.

      @@SJ-gd6bo correct every animal is different which is why it is weird that you said they should not be released into the wild based off of your experience with your raccoon. If every animal is different then that means you actually don't know if they should be released or not. Rehabilitation and domestication are different.

      You’ve obviously never had one kill your chickens or two baby kittens that were only a few weeks old. Wild raccoons are not sweet and cuddly. Tame ones like this sure. But they have claws and teeth for a reason.
