    I love that Mabel came home to have her babies, where she knew she was safe. And then bringing Daisy back for snacks shows this is that safe and cozy place they will always return to. I'm grateful they were allowed to leave to be raccoons and not kept indoors as pets. I know it had to be tempting to have those amazing, little creatures always around. But they belong in the wild to be raccoons, and they belong at home for snacks and love. Best of both worlds. I hope to see grandbaby raccoons on a The Dodo video soon!

    Juvenile raccoons, like human kids, just can't wait to get out. But, if they were raised LOVINGLY, they usually return for food, help, and (yes) even your company. Especially once they have babies of their own! I speak from experience.

She lives here year round, but interestingly - another female I raised ( and released a few miles away) they both share this box for having kits, and then my big trees. Not sure how they work out whom stays where, and at what age - but I definitely know the Moms, and see their kits (when they are little.) Harrowing when the Moms trying to teach them to not trust humans, and they can't wait to come down and eat their treats. I love them endlessly!!!!

    That's a perfect situation for a wild animal. To be able to be free, yet have somewhere they know to be safe and welcoming, especially when babies are involved. That lady must have a huge heart, because wild animals, when they're rehabilitated well (and it certainly seems that way given the others' normal disappearance), they don't usually return to the human territory. But they know when they are with good people, and sometimes that allows them to trust the one who cared so well other for them. It's the biggest compliment nature can pay to you, IMHO.

      Six years is a very long life for a raccoon in the wild. Living about twice as long as he "should" have done is probably down to the care you gave him when young and the little extras he got from you throughout his life. Transforming the entire life of a free wild animal is a great achievement. If jealousy was fatal I would now be dead.

      I found a raccoon that had either been hit by a car or in a fight & his side was all split open and his leg was limping. I called wildlife but they never returned my call. So since this raccoon was out during the day I knew he wasn’t rabid he was just desperately looking for food. I continue to give him food and water & Little by little he did get better and healed up. I can never resist feeling anything but my neighbors don’t like it, so unfortunately I have to contain myself. I would even feed wild fox & they were very gentle. Honestly. I wasn’t even mad. But my brothers were. So we ended up setting up an area outside for them and feeding them to keep them from going inside. It worked. Once they fully matured and started having babies and stuff. They stopped coming around as much. They still lived in our garage but they became way more independent once they weren’t interested to come inside or be around humans. Lol. I learned my lesson on how to handle raising orphaned wild animals after that. (My brothers and I were 10,14,16 at the time)

    Oh my gosh just so cool that they kept coming back like that. Thanks for sharing their story it's so precious.... Well for the past week I've been seeing a very large raccoon coming in my garage to eat the cat food. So I started putting all the cat food up he doesn't seem threatening at all. I mean I can tell him to leave and he will. But I'm very scared of him but he is just so big and beautiful. And yet just like clockwork he's there every morning trying to get into the garage... I have no experience with raccoons and I really don't know what to do because I'm afraid somebody will hurt him so any advice I can get on what to do with him would be very much appreciated.

    • @kenc2257
      @kenc2257 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every once in a while (not often) a racoon will come by to eat the leftover cat food outside (where we live, it's okay to feed feral cats). We live in suburban southern CA--it's NOT okay to feed racoons in parts of southern CA (like Los Angeles)--not sure about our area, but we don't deliberately feed the racoons. We have noticed that (very infrequently) a racoon will dig in our flower beds, and wash in the birdbaths, but that's maybe once or twice a year. There are also coyotes in our area, and maybe they keep the racoons away? You should keep your garage door closed--racoons can cause damage if they get into your garage or attic/crawlspace.

    This is one of my favorite ideas here on TH-cam. I used to foster wild Racoons and Opossums and they did the same to me, they would goes off but come back when they are hungry. Now my mom at the house I was born and raised 20 years later still has Racoons and Opossums visits and will occasionally have babies in the same cages their Grandparents had their babies in.

    This is a beautiful story and thanks for stepping in and helping. I hope the raccoons can discern between who might be a danger and who is not. Also, I would like to see humans and animals co-exist together in a way that we do not harm them but help them when in trouble and just be respectful of their life because their life matters too!

    This makes me very happy to see because I have a similar situation. The first year I came to Texas they had a very bad snow storm. During that storm I met Raku. She was young and on the thin side so I fed her. Each day she came back and we have been doing this for going on three years now. She is very healthy now and had one baby which I named Raisin. Once Raisin became an adult he went off on his own but Raku still spends time here and gets nutritious food when she needs it.

    I have had a mama raccoon for 14 yrs bring me her new kids ...she was a very gentle animal. I've had a similar experience with a wild possum. I've never had her in the house or a cage, she just showed up on my porch one night in February 2019.
    I gave her some cat food, and she has been coming back almost every night since then. She has had three litters of joeys in that time, and some of them have found their way to my porch. The mother puts up with them for a few months, then tells them it's time to stay away, especially the male joeys.

    • @6661313
      @6661313 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you shouldn't be giving them milk, raccoons, like most animals passed baby stages, are lactose intolerant, and the babies have a much better source from their mom.
      fruit like bananas, grapes, even avocado is great, eggs (boiled and shelled is fine if you don't want the mess), nuts, and dog food too
