Ranch Day at Estancia NIBEPO AIKE in Patagonia 🐑 | Day Trip from El Calafate, Argentina

  • Hello and greetings from Patagonia! In today’s video, we’re going to be visiting Estancia Nibepo Aike, which is located within Los Glaciares National Park. This is one of the many excursions you can do from the town of El Calafate, and it’s a nice way to enjoy a day in the countryside, learn about the inner workings of an estancia, and enjoy a traditional barbecue while you’re at it. So let’s kick off another adventure!
The estancia Nibepo Aike was founded by Santiago Peso, a Croatian immigrant who arrived in Argentina at the beginning of the 20th century. He settled in an area which today sits inside Los Glaciares National Park, where he raised sheep and cattle.
Originally, the estancia was named La Jerónima, but when Santiago fell ill with tuberculosis and eventually passed away, his wife renamed the estancia in honour of their 3 daughters. Their nicknames were Niní, Bebe, y Porota, so by grabbing the first 2 letters from each name, they got Nibepo, and then Aike which means place in the Tehuelche language. Estancia Nibepo Aike - that’s the name.
During our afternoon visit to Estancia Nibepo Aike, we got to enjoy an afternoon tea, walk along the shores of Lago Argentino, go on a short hike for panoramic views of the estancia, attend a sheep-sheering demonstration, and then enjoy a Patagonian barbecue. It was nice to spend a relaxed afternoon out in the countryside, and next time, we'll definitely opt for an overnight stay!

Estancias, and the Gauchos that work them, are at the heart of Patagonian culture and lifestyle. They are ranches or farms, normally used for rearing sheep and other cattle, and in many cases cover vast areas of the Patagonian pampas. These days many have opened their doors to visitors, particularly those who are keen to ride and get a taste for Gaucho life.

Out of the 3 day tours I went on from El Calafate, this was the best. Although I suspect that sheep shearing is a minor revenue earner compared to the tourist dollars.
It is very pretty and you have to get out of the dumpy El Calafate town.
    Great video.

Food in Argentina is excellent, better than North America. The asado meat is one of the best. Also Italian and Spanish food are excellent. Now is cheaper for the value of peso.

Nice day trip! A&S, I have a few questions! You posted this video in May 2021, right? It is my impression that most of Argentina is still ravaged by the pandemic, especially BA. My Porteño friends advise me to hold off coming back until the end of 2021 or early 2022. I will visit Calafate. I'm curious, how much was the day trip? The ARS is now 94 to the US$ Enjoy, Larry

Hi Larry, we're posting now, but this footage is from our last trip pre-pandemic. This would have been December 2019. Argentina's borders are still closed for international travel at the moment.

Boy, you both have grown some gray hair since those videos were taken.
I wonder which should be considered now a days more of a totalitarian suppressive regime, Canada or Argentina.
    Anyway, they both seem screwed.
