I would give Screaming a slight edge but they are both great. If it was Piece of Mind which is my favorite Maiden it might go the other way.

Two of the greatest Metal albums ever. Both 5 star classics in their own right. The better of the two, in this age old debate, for me is the mighty “Screaming For Vengeance”. I completely disagree about filler tracks (on either album for that matter), as Priest’s more melodic side is still anchored in their identifying and majestic sound. The band’s adventurousness and wide musical palette has always appealed to me, and SFV showcases that phenomenally. If it had been given a video and proper push by the label, “(Take These) Chains” would have likely racked up solid FM radio play. Such a strong hook while still maintaining a bottom end heaviness throughout. It was cool seeing that one pulled out for the tour with Uriah Heep a few years back. The moody “Pain and Pleasure” has only gotten better over time. The soloing in that one during the breakdown just soars. “Fever” is very underrated, and ranks among the band’s finest ballad leaning tracks. Halford’s vocals on it are among his best on the record. The straightforwardness and heft of “Devil’s Child” has made it a concert favorite over the years and a perfect punch to end the album on. It’s tough picking the best overall Priest album, but SFV is arguably their best sequenced release. It just flows perfectly from start to end, with the band’s power and Allom’s production being the constant through line. A masterpiece, period! The same can be said of “Invaders” and “Gangland” on NOTB. Both are great, urgent tracks that fit where they’re placed on the album. I’d love to see either played live on an upcoming tour. The best part of the debate between these two iconic records is that there isn’t a wrong answer. It just comes down to preference. Both will continue to be revered for years to come 🤟

I love 'Screaming for Vengeance' but 'The Number of the Beast' was the album that started it all for me as a metalhead. That was the first metal album I ever bought and that album single-handedly made me a Maiden fan and a metalhead so that album will always have a special place in my heart...... I think the Iron Maiden record is stronger so gotta go with 'The Number of the Beast'.

    Takeaways from tonight's episode:
    1. Ryan, Nick, Steve, Chris, Sydney and Lynne with guests John, Christian and Ralph in the house...
    2. "Especially when Rob is singing it to another dude"
    3. "We were thinking it, Chris said it"
    4. "Fever is sexy"
    5. "Drummer fever"
    6. As Pete points out for me, lol., Lynne immediately drops an F bomb and only mentions the drummer...
    7. "No honorable mentions"
    8. "...despite the hot man on man love that was going down..."
    9. "Just pull the trigger"
    10. "Are you dead inside?"
    11. "Did you find Charlotte?"
    12. "She's only asking for 15 quid"
    13. "I'm nothing if not boringly predictable"
    14. "I was negative 17"
    15. "Every time I hear that intro I'm proud to be metal"
    16. "Now there's an 18 minute intro"
    17. "Your brother is now my favorite person"
    18. "I'm giving Maiden a 666 out of 5"
    19. "Me not too"
    20. "Wake me when its over"
    21. Iron Maiden has too many guitarists and Judas Priest not enough
    22. Joe Bag of Doughnuts
    23. "Lose Twinkle Toes"
    24. "You're a bitch. Can we go out?"
    25. "I love you, man"
    26. " ...doing the Herman Munster"
And in regards to the topic, I prefer The Number Of The Beast easily over Screaming For Vengeance. I rate the Priest album a 4 and the Maiden album 4.5. It's still my third favorite Maiden album behind the Dianno albums and is a masterpiece of playing by my all time favorite heavy metal drummer, Clive Burr.

When these two albums came out both were equally exciting and popular. I saw the show, it was the fall of 1982, Iron Maiden opened for Priest on the World Vengeance tour at the New Haven Coliseum. The show was incredible Priest was probably more popular but after this tour Maiden was just as big. Maiden emerged as Priest’s evil twin brother and the Number of the Beast album cover was despised by parents so it made the Maiden record even more interesting. At the end of the day, Number of the Beast is the greatest heavy metal album of all time.

Nobody could touch Priest in 1982! Watch the videos in Memphis, Tenn 1982 and 1983 US Festival. Priest was a machine. Priest scripted guitar solos are legendary compared to Maidens guitar solos. Not even close guitar wise. And vocal wise Halford is the metal god. Maiden is #2. This coming from someone who saw Iron Maiden on the Piece of Mind Tour and World Slavery Tour and I've never seen Judas Priest. And Bruce signed my Piece of Mind Tour book. Song wise Hallowed Be Thy Name may be the greatest metal song of all time but Hellion/Electric Eye/Riding On The Wind are the greatest metal starters with scripted solos of all time. And Priest in their prime was a tad better than Maiden in their prime.

This is an epic battle of metal dominance known amongst the headbangers throughout time. Maiden vs Priest. Beast vs Vengeance. Wielding axes and swords as the war drums pound across the battle field. Classic albums clashing to find a victor. I choose Judas Priest “Screaming for Vengeance” by a few songs.

Both epic albums and shows. Gotta say I agree that "Total Eclipse" should have replaced "Gangland" on the album. Surprised that nobody mentioned that "Take These Chains Off" was written by an outside writer, a case of the label looking for hits. Screaming for Vengeance for me.
I knew of Number of the Beast when it came out in 1982, but I was a kid and didn't have the album. I didn't listen to Screaming until the early 90s. I was also a huge Maiden fan in the 90s and had all their albums up to Seventh Son.
However in the last decade I have gotten into early Priest albums, and have come to appreciate how good they were back then.
Even though I never listened to Screaming for Vengeance in the 80s it evokes memories of the metal music of that time that I do remember. The album is pure energy. They were at the peak of their fame. If you look at their live performances from that year they are like gods on stage. This album is a monument from that year.
In my mind Screaming was a bolder album than Beast, and in their body of work Priest has been more creative and influential than Maiden. That's my two cents.

I do like the song , ‘You’ve Got Another Thing Coming’ from ‘ Screaming for Vengeance’. I pick Judas Priest because of that song. I would pick” Iron Maiden”, if it was between, the debut, or ‘ Piece of Mind.

Number of the Beast is a more consistent album, but the dynamic range and compositional diversity on Screaming for Vengeance alone exceeds that of the entire Maiden discography. This is partly a function of Halford's vocals, and partly a function of musical composition and execution. Just consider the intensely energetic rage of the "Screeeeammmmiiiinnng" scream near the end of Screaming for Vengeance or the sheer ecstasy of the "So destiny has brought us, oh so close together..." section of Fever. Maiden never matches those moments.
    Screaming for Vengeance; 4.5/5
The Number of the Beast: 4/5
    Anyone who disagrees is wrong.

I love SFV, but Beast takes it hands down for me. You really hear Maiden’s hunger here, accentuated by Clive’s frantic drumming style. Bruce just storms in here making an instant mark. Beast is far more consistent, though I DO love SFV - even the more commercial songs such as Take The Chains and Fever.

Maiden for me!! I went to the Priest/Maiden tour in '82 as a Priest fan and came out as a Maiden fan!! Still listen to both bands a lot but Maiden has a much stronger catalog.

I'd go for Screaming for Vengeance.
Because Number of the beast has way more filler tracks on it. Like 4 or 5 tracks are really big within Iron Maiden's discography
While almost every song on Screaming for vengeance is such a step forward for the band. All killer, no filler.

My two peneth to the debate. I must first declare an interest, The NOTB album was transformative to my music taste when I first bought it in Woolworths in 1982. Before then I liked Status Quo, and a bit of AC/DC, but metal was still unknown to me. As soon as I saw the album cover I had to have it, something that was backed up by Eddies face rotating at 33rpm as the album played. It blew my mind, and opened up a love of metal that continues to this day. So to be objective is difficult, however I have just listened back to back to both albums, and they are both very strong albums. TNOTB is more aggressive, the Priest album is more commercial, made for FM radio and MTV. There is no thought of that from the Maiden, and why would there be, this was a band emerging from the NWOBHM to take on the world. Listening 40 years on I still think TNOTB is the better album, not by much, but track by track it is stronger in my opinion, but spending a couple of hours in the company of these two great albums is fantastic.

I liked Maiden better in my youth, prefer Priest now. Hellion/Electric Eye is superior to everything on NOTB. In my humble opinion Priest's live setlist in '82 was their absolute best ever, was near perfect blend of their 70's and early 80's staples. Only very tiny flaw was the retiring of the song "Tyrant".

When it comes to defining HEAVY METAL… it’s apples and apples… they are both awesome albums!! However, Halford is the metal God! If I had to send one of them into a time capsule, Screaming For Vengeance. Priest is Heavy Metal. The “chunk” is there… with Number Of The Beast the time signatures are chaotic. Not consistent with the theme.

I love Screaming For Vengeance, it was my favorite Priest album for years (now it's Stained Class), but Number of the Beast will always be my favorite Maiden album, it was definitely said tonight but as phenomenal as Screaming For Vengeance is there are one or two too many filler tracks on it (especially if you have the remastered edition, where they include the awful ballad Prisoner of Your Eyes), while there is no filler whatsoever on Number of the Beast.

The irony of the fact that my first concert ever was Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance Tour with Iron Maiden opening. You cannot make me partake of such sacrilege as to compare two Gods one against the other. Oh no not I. 😝Okay, so, if I HAD to choose - SFV. And now I 😓. For me THE most underrated metal tune ever - Bloodstone.

For me, Screaming, although fantastic, was the album that broke Priest in the US as it focused as much on melody as heaviness, but for me Beast was just jawdropping from the moment the needle hit the groove. And it has Halliowed Be Thy Name on it. 4/5 for Screaming, 5/5 for Beast...

Today really difficult to split these albums, love them both, and can’t split them, I need a tie breaker. So I’m going to let the 19 year old Steve decide. In 1982 after following Maiden in the clubs, and support slots including Priest from their self produced Soundhouse tape.’ through to Killers I was disappointed that Paul D’anno had been replaced , and their gritty sound become a more polished sound. So it took me a year or so to come around to Number of the Beast. While Screaming for Vengeance was a Priest return to form, So 19 year old me. in 1982 Is voting for Priiest Screaming for Vengeance.

Both albums are one of the bands best. Overall to me the number of the beast has more classic songs. The production though is modern and sounds fantastic on screaming for vengeance. I love both albums and bands. A crossover period where priest started getting less good after and iron maiden getting even better after.

Beast is a solid top 5 Maiden album, if not top 3. Screaming is a tier 2 Priest album, just too much filler. I always was of the opinion that taking the heaviest tracks of Screaming and Defenders into 1 album, that would have been a killer record.
    Maiden’s Beast : 4.5
    Priest’s Screaming: 3

Wow that tour T shirt is absolutely mind blowing!! Best band T Ever Nomination. Oooh yeah! Priest or Maiden. Great topic! Great panel. Up the Irons -but in our house Priest edges out Maiden. Sorry. We had deep dive discussions when Firepower came out.
In our house Firepower is #1 fave of ALL LP's released after 2000. We spin both band's LP's a LOT. But Priest more.
Covered both bands at L.A. jam nights. (!) Trooper, Breakin The Law, You Gotta Another...Run To Hills, others.
Priest ahead of Maiden. Sorry. Though we like Dave Murra y's leads best overall. Maiden!
We have seen both bands live. Firepower tour smoked! Fab setlist. Priest's double flying v's Oooooh! 2 V's! Faulkner soars.
Again edging out Maiden's recent tours -though we REALLY like Gers' energy live. 3 guitars !?!
We think KK and Faulkner/Sneap should follow Maiden's approach -bring back KK and tour with 3 guitarists too.
KK's new band could open ! Yep, KK plays twice, baby. Solo band AND Priest. KK can handle it. Plus he gets 2 wages!. $$. Ha.
Fantasy Tour Bonus: Add Queensryche or LA Guns. How 'bout Jack Russel/Great White? Bohnom's Zep Experience? UFO, Dokken?
Add Scorpions or Whitesnake and bam! Priest Fest. Shoot, P Dianno's solo band could open too. Make it a huge tent.
Metalheads unite! Zap! Ha. Thanks for reading! From Michael T Wyman and 99 in L.A.
