  • Today we bring you the 3 times distilled Hazelburn 10 year old. This is a full ex bourbon barrel matured Springbank product. Hazelburn is their unpeated and triple distilled distillate. With huge bold citrus notes and an exceptional finish it very well might be an early contestant for the 2022 Top Shelf Value Whisky of the Year.

Fortunately this bottle and Longrow NAS are still on some shelves but god bless you finding any Springbank. we live in a crazy world. lucky enough still have 22 unopened bottle of Springbank from 10 to 25 and need to go through them slowly cause I don’t think I can get any more. I remember in a local Facebook page even some people who used to hate Springbank are now after them

Sadly, I think you’re accurate. Dustin has gone so far to make the statement he doesn’t know he will ever get another bottle of Springbank besides the 10 because it just won’t be available. And secondary is crazy. I believe I have three bottles unopened left maybe four.
      The end is coming!!! 🤣

Found this locally a few weeks ago - really nice actually! First couple of pours weren’t amazing but after the neck pours it became very tasty. Funny enough, the fall/winter 2021 releases of hazelburn 10 and longrow NAS in my opinion were better thank springbank 10.

@@howiestyles4938 mine are all dated Nov 2021 -- from that batch, the longrow and hazel burn are both amazing imo. I’d say longrow then hazelburn second - the longrow from that batch is an excellent balance of fruity and funky - the peat becomes very balanced after the neck pours; I actually didn’t love it at first since it was all peat/smoke but then the fruit came out and it’s just lovely now. Went back to get the other bottle on the shelf. I actually had a similar experience with the Hazelburn 10; much much better after the first few pours

I am finishing off a 2005 14 yr old single cask Hazelburn (rum barrel) bottled in 2019 for Alberta Canada and it's wonderful but strangely I am definitely getting peat from this "unpeated Hazelburn" both on the nose and palette. Nice stuff, wish I had purchased a few more. was a nice price back then.

I have the HB 13 yr Olorosso matured and bottled at 47.1% that I have been enjoying for over a year now (less than a third left in the bottle). It has opened up and mellowed beautifully over the past few months. Missed the 10 yr I guess … but no regrets … I enjoy what I have 😋

It's been a couple years since I've had this bottle - so an earlier rendition - but your notes still apply rather well from what I remember. I'd surely like to find another at a reasonable price but it's dubious whether that'll ever happen. If you like this style of Springbank I'd suggest finding a bottle of the 2018 rendition of the 18 year old matured 100% in ex-bourbon. It's the first 18 Springer that I didn't sorely wish was bottled at >50% (though of course I'd still welcome that!).

    • @topshelfwhisky

I've always preferred this expression to any of the limited Hazelburns. Yes, a bit of lemon but also a wonderful plasticine note. It's been in short supply the last couple of years but I managed to get a couple of bottles not long ago. By the way, Benromach did a fantastic Triple Distilled 8 year (ex-bourbon) bottled at 50% a few years back which was very similar to Hazelburn 10.

    • @topshelfwhisky

I need to compare this Hazelburn to a few whiskies. It comes off well about average age and price but I’m often surprised… it’s been a while since I’ve had a good Benromach need to one.

@@topshelfdustin3060 Seriously guys, both of you need to take another look at Benromach - Where have you been? They often get mentioned as a Spingbank alternative. A Speyside but so old school you would never know it. Excellent distillate. They usually do the bourbon and sherry blend like Springbank and have that delicious dirty note. The 10, 15 and 21 are all bottled at a disappointing 43% but good well made whisky. Where they really shine is the cask strength stuff which is marketed to folks like us. This is Springbank 12 alternative and well priced. There's a difference, of course, but they both have an old school outlook which is rare today. The Triple distilled I mentioned was pure ex-bourbon and flew under the radar for ages. I bought a stack of them.

it's basically what a good Lowland style should be with the lemony thing. I'm glad i got 2 bottles last year at $69.99 before it went to $100 now and I was whining then about the price because it was $55 about 3 years ago here. I just passed on the new Local Barley 10 for $200 and that is a good U.S. price but still not worth it to me and I would still rather have 12 CS's. I did get a Kilkerran 8 port cask for $109.99 which is pretty tolerable. it all should be hitting across the U.S. in a few weeks and as always SoCal gets it first because Pacific Edge Imports.is here in L.A. area. Hazelburn 10 is a pretty malt to drink on a very fresh clean palate when you haven't had anything for at least a few days. BTW no 12 CS 's in this shipment of J&A Mitchell stuff. I have heard nothing about the current batch and that is not a good sign

I 100% agree with your thoughts on the Hazelburn 10 year. It might not be super popular amongst Springbank fans, but it's a darn good Campbeltown whisky. That creamy finish is what surprised me when I first bought a bottle 4 years ago. I wasn't expecting much going into it, but that finish is what sold me. Now I need at least one on my bar at all times. I saw that Springbank is releasing a 21 year old Hazelburn this year. Are you and Dustin going to pick up a bottle? I might if I can find it.
