How to Kick Start a 1966 Harley-Davidson Custom Chopper

- Tony Heller demonstrates the proper technique for kick starting his 1966 Custom Harley-Davidson Chopper affectionately known as Black Sunshine. I produced this video on October 24, 2007 for a television production class at Santa Ana College in Santa Ana, California.

So glad you included the "Full" instructional video, with tips on removing the bike from the garage.
I can't even count the number of times I have ridden in circles inside my garage, because no one shared this information with me.

You rock, man. I just got done reading the Hell's Angel's ridealong book by Hunter S. Thompson and they mention the CFMC a lot and the Hessians a few times too. I love hearing stories like yours, you need a blog or something some day! Killer bike, as well. Those forks are ridiculous!
Just checked in after a long while. FWIW a few responses to comments:
*It's a foot clutch/hand shift Jockey lid with three neutrals. Correct, I always check to make sure it's in one. Correct, the bike wouldn't roll if it was in gear.
*It won't idle when first started unless I leave the enrichener engaged.
*The headlight might be a little loose and rattle. So do my balls.
*I'm a former Chapter Pres. of the CFMC. Later I went on to become the West Coast Pres of the Hessians MC. HFFH stands for "Hessians Forever, Forever Hessians".
*The lightening bolts were given to me as a present by a good friend. Like any art, you're free to draw any conclusion as to what they represent. They have a certain meaning to me but interpret them as you wish, just don't assign your meaning to me or others.
*Thanks to those that posted positive comments. The negative opinions are your right as well - if there were no differences of opinions there would be no horse races. I will say however that I can't be insulted if I don't value your opinion.

i like old sportys.. my dad had a 71 xlch and it was a mean bike.. it had drag pipes with a little upsweep and the end with fish tails.. and it looked mean too.. i loved that bike

On a Harley, you can. Its not a "true" choke. BUT, only for a few moments, then push it in and its all good.

Most people have no clue how to kickstart a bike.
Their idea of starting a bike is, 1) Insert key and turn. 2) push start button.
Which is why I love my harley! Kick start only, right side shift.
Most people who might want to steal it would break their leg starting it. (has some SERIOUS compression!) and if they got past that, they would wrap their ass around a utility pole when they discovered the shift is not where they thought it was... or the main brake...

move the Pistons at top dead center valves open and swing with the starter arm with the momentum like when you spinning a bocket full of water around and around and get to the point when you do not apply any force it is going by itself

The kick start is what it is also known as the kickstart peddle you may be thinking of jockey shift which is for changing gears its on the other side of the bike. I think it takes more skill to ride with type of gears
How will they make a fast getaway on the sons of anarchy prequel? They'll have to leave the bikes running and then they might overheat
What kind of exhaust pipes are those?????? I've been looking for the elevated kind like that but can't find any!!!!!!!!!!
you didint state weather or not you must be in neutral, and can you kickstart in gear with the clutch in?

Despite the bolts... That there is a nice bike.
Note: turn choke off after a few warm up revs on a warm day.
Same procedure as on my 58 Pan :-)

Just for some of you girlies' info, I was a Chapter Prez of the Chosen Few MC before becoming a Hessian MC member. The CFMC was and is 95% Black. Chew on that. As for the SS, it just might be a kill symbol on a killer bike - my father was killed by the Nazis while entering France on Omaha Beach 90 days before I was born on Oct. 6, '44. A 1958 BMW R50 required only 1/3 of the steps involved to turn on the bike, a 1966 HD has no excuse.
Still, it's nice to know what use to take 10 steps only takes 2 now (Put key in, press ignition).

first let me say i agree with you completely how ever the lightning bolts on his tank have nothing to do with the nazis. yes they were used by the nazis in the 40s but they were not developed by them same thing with the swastika two emblems meaning power, strength, unity, health and good fortune. these emblems have been used since about 3 thousand years ago, and just because one group of ignorant people used them many years ago should not pigon hold what they represent with that said

@crmstl2 He just push the bike about a half a block, I didn't see him pushing the clutch in while pushing the bike so im pretty sure trhat he is sure the bike is in neutral. Luck has nothing to do with it. Pay attention man.
