    Hey Dave. Watching you work IS very soothing to me. I do all my own adj.s
    on my stringed stuff. I don't, however, attempt most major tasks for the lack of money for tools.
    You are a great story teller & teacher and I love to see your problem solving methods materialized right before my eyes. GREAT FUCKING SHOP !

    I bought a Fender Mustang off eBay that sat in a case since 1985 unplayed. When I got it it was caked in nicotine, absolutely disgusting. The only thing I found that took it off and revealed a shiny finish was "Virtuoso" guitar polish. I bought a bottle of it for 6 bucks. It was almost like a solvent that melted the nicotine away. It was disgusting what was on the pad when I was finished but it cleaned it up nicely with not a lot of elbow grease.

    Lighter Fluid will not hurt Finishes of any type that I am aware of. Including Nitrocellulose used on Gibsons. When Im working on a guitar and some Numb Nuts has put on stickers or decals or even bumper stickers I use it to remove that very old glue and backing paper that is left behind on removal. And it is the only thing that I have tried that works removing that crap down to the original finish leaving nothing behind to make the guitar's finish look bad. Have a good one.

    Professor Green's guitar polish also does wonders for the gunk.
    I bought an used acoustic that reeked of smoke.
    I cleaned with the Professor Green's then I hung some Ceder ovals inside. After a few weeks, the smoke smell went completely away.

    Vinegar water also works well and will de-scent any smells it has. For giutars that were stored in a moldy basement.
    Works on cardboard packaging as well for collectors.

      Lighter fluid only contains about 30% Naphtha. The formula changed many years ago. As far as I know Coleman Fuel is still 100% Naphtha. Here's the Ronsonol MSDS:

    For thick polyurethane finishes, I have always used rubbing alcohol to clean most gunk off. For any fretboard, I have used rubbing alcohol to clean, and then follow up with lemon oil on rosewood or ebony fretboards, maple is too dense for the lemon oil to do any good. For adhesive, like from stickers, I use a citrus-based cleaner (Goo Gone), then follow up with rubbing alcohol to remove the remaining citrus-based cleaner. However, I found that using rubbing alcohol on a nitro finish will clean it, but will also dull the finish. I think using naptha is a good idea, but haven't tried all natural oven cleaner. I will consider your process for the next nitro axe I go to clean. Thx!

Almost as bad as blowing the asbestos brakes out with compressed air without a mask that they never warned us about. So thats what those spots are on the xray photo.

    I do guitar repairs and restrings at work and i just use meguiars cleaner wax for smoke and other crap but i also use the mist and wipe wax and carnuba wax. ive never had any trouble with any of them, neither has my dad whos been doing it longer than me, granted ive never worked on nitro myself but ive seen the cleaner wax on it and i didnt notice any problems. Am I putting the finish in danger. Customers have never complained?

  • @wildbillhackett
    @wildbillhackett 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I haven't tried Easy Off, but I'd be surprised if it did as good a job removing smoke as Fantastic or 409 does. It just melts immediately with those two. And I like Dissolve It for removing stickers. Cloth is fine most of the time, but if you get something really tough, cheese cloth is your friend.

      I don't allow Fantastic in the shop. 409 wins , hands down (in my opinion). That spray cleaner that the Dollar Stores sell cleans "stuff" way better than the Fantastic too. Just don't know if I'm willing to try on vintage guitars yet.

    I have a mint 2000 Gibson Les Paul Diamond Sparkle Limited Millenium Edition that I bought off Ebay and when I got it and opened the case it was like someone puffed a sig right in my face. This thing has been in a place where someone was smoking for 17 years and it stinks real bad. I don't want to F -up the finish in any way so any real way to get the smoke smell off the guitar? The case is a loss.
