If they are going to, here's how it should be:
Dragon Quest I - III: GBC era
Dragon Quest IV - VI: DS version
      For the first one.

Indeed! The plotline in Heavenly Bride was amazing. It's hard for me to pick a favorite between DQ IV, V and VIII. I love III too, and DQ1 along with Final Fantasy 1 introduced me to the incredible genre of JRPGs as a kid with NES.

How time flies. I have fond memories of going to a DQ art gallery in 2011 to celebrate the 25th anniversary. It was amazing, original works on display by Akira Toriyama was especially cool. I should stop by the DQ store in Akihabara and pick up a few things, DQ is one of my favorite series after all.

Johnny, I am extremely happy you made this video! I am an American living in Japan and seeing the hype for Dragon Quest here has been amazing.
Dragon Quest Heroes 2 came out and I bought it and it is extremely, extremely good! Much better than the first! I am a casual fan who was first truly introduced to the series through Fortune Street and this game has its hooks in me!
30 great years and I'm looking forward to 30 more.
    Thanks again, Johnny!

Hello! Looking at buying my first Dragon Quest game and came across your video. I'm shocked I never got into this--I mistakenly grew up thinking it was an action rpg series and I was awful at those as a kid, so I never asked for the Dragon Warrior games even though I played Final Fantasy. Looks like I may have a lot of games to keep me busy! :)

I have fond memories of playing Dragon Warrior for the first time when I was 10 years old ( 1990). Dragon Warrior 2 is one of the hardest games I’ve ever played on the NES. 8 is my current favorite with 4 a close second. I have 11 pre ordered and can’t wait to delve into it, only 11 more days!

I remember my parents rented a few games at the local video store in Dragon Warrior was one of them that was literally my very first jrpg and I was 8 at the time. DQ8 was my first real experience and it knocked my socks off. Never got much further than halfway cuz I played in my friends room but I've recently got hyped for 11 started playing 1 on the iOS and just looking forward to collecting and beating the whole series! thanks for the videos Johnny, you're the best!

My introduction to the series were Dragon Quest Rocket Slime and Monster Jokers 1 for the DS; not the best place to start but both games were being sold at a blockbuster clearance sale for dirt cheap prices.
I recently acquired Dragon Warrior 1 for the nes and you are so right; there's something so enthralling about old rpgs.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I love how I got my friend into Dragon Quest.
It all started with my favorite game, Chrono Trigger.
Made him play it, he loved the world, and asked him if he'd like to try Dragon Quest.
Low and behold, he had a copy of fucking Dragon Warrior for the NES for YEARS and never played it.
So I got him to play that, and now he won't return my Switch because he's addicted to Dragon Quest Builders.
...And buying him IX didn't help, he just plays both back to back.

I love the dragon quest monsters spin off games because that is how I was intoduced to the series, but I also love 7, and 8 because I have so many memories of playing them with my grandpa and he was the one who got me in to playing video games. I've been playing video games for 21 years now all thanks to my grandfather.

    i seriously can't wait for 11
i started with DQ9 on the DS when i was 9 or 10 years old after my dad went out and bought it for me on release day, and i can remember him getting really excited to see me enjoying it, because he was so eager to share his dragon quest collection with me. we played through the whole game on co-op, and, honestly, it was one of the best gaming experiences i've had so far.
by now, i have played every dragon warrior/quest game, and my dad and i are so excited to get DQ10 on both 3DS and PS4, although i can imagine there'll be lots of fighting over who gets the TV.
i think i'd definitely recommend 9 as the best starting point, as i feel that the co-op aspect is what really helped me get into the series , as well as the wealth of content and the fantastic alchemy system (i spent days upon days with the alchemy system when i was younger).

I have rediscovered my love of the series recently and am trying to play through them all in order now. I beat the first game last night! Really excited to play all the others c:

I started out with the NES version of Dragon Quest/Warrior IV, and I LOVED it!
Later on I played the SNES remakes of Dragon Quest 1, 2 and 3, I've only finished 1, not 2 or 3, but I plan on getting back to them, then I played 5 and I got pretty close to finishing it but then I kind of didn't know what to do anymore, and well, Dragon Quest IX was one of my first DS games, and it's my No. 1 Favourite DS game of all! I've put the most time into IX than any other DQ game, well over 200 hours, and I LOVED it! I loved all of them, and I'll be sure to buy Dragon Quest VII and VIII on the 3DS when they come out, I'm SOOOO Looking forward to them!

When I was a kid in the early 90s, I used to watch my dad and older brother play Dragon Warrior 1 on NES. My dad would give me the map and tell me to help him find places to go. After he beat the game, my mom went out trying to find Dragon Warrior II for him to play. She couldn't find it however but found Dragon Warrior IV and bought that instead. My dad played it for a bit but he lost interest and my older brother took up the challenge of playing it. He was five years older than me so I would watch him play it and help him. He got to the point where you get the hot air balloon but couldn't figure out what to do next, so he never beat it. Years later when I was old enough to play it, I tried several times to beat it but never did. Finally, when I was in high school and my brother came back home for college break, we got the rom and emulator and played it like the old days, where he would play and I would watch and help. He finally beat the game we had spent 10+ years trying to beat. It was a great memory. Dragon Warrior IV holds a special place in my heart.

I always feel the reason 8 (and soon the 7 remake on 3DS) and subsequently 9 and 11 are slightly better is simply due to being able to see your characters in combat. For diehard DQ fans its not such a big deal but 8 really is the perfect place to start if your new. Most new DQ players find the lack of character visuals in battle to be dull, and it's not until your in love with the charm of the series that you appreciate the broader gameplay and experience that you no longer really notice that as much. For me though I'm excited to play the remake of 7 for this reason specifically. As a FF fan I just grew up used to seeing the combat animations, and it made the earlier games hard to take initially. But now I love all of them because I appreciated the series as whole so much more. Nice Video! Thanks!

  • @Feelin_DanDy

So my story with the DQ series is when I was 8, and first played the NES, I had Dragon Warrior. I didn't know how to play RPG's back then so didn't get far and gave up. My introduction to learning how to play RPG's and realizing I loved them was FFVII (oOoOo, big surprise, right? xD). I didn't start playing this series until like 2 years ago for the first time. I started from the beginning, Dragon Warrior again on NES, this time, I know how to play RPG's! After finishing that, I went to the Super Famicom remake of DQII. It felt like the series didn't have a true identity yet personally for me, until that is I played DQIII. DQIII was great and had more of an identity at that point, it was my favorite so far. Then went to DQIV on DS, that one was amazing as well. I started to become a huge fan of the games now. At that point, I couldn't choose which one was my favorite until I played DQV next on the DS! DQV is the last one I played so far and it's my favorite in the series because it did much more with the story. It was a lot more interesting than the traditional story and had some crazy stuff happening that was very mature themed and a lot of fun! Can't wait to play DQVI next, but I'm too busy engulfing myself in Chrono Cross xD

DQ 1&2 for SNES is the best introduction, since they're easy to pick up and play.
Those are also the shortest in the main series and don't complicate things too much for newbies.

I think it's important to note too that in the re-release of Dragon Quest 1&2, the games were less grindy. It didn't take nearly as long to grind for the xp or gold that you needed. You just got everything faster. So it depends if you want the classic experience or something more modernized on which version you want to play there. As far as I can remember, the games are the same otherwise.

the iOS/Andriod version is even better. it is the super famicom port on a mobile phone. the graphics are super Nintendo quality and less grinding, however you still need to grind to complete the game. what would really be great if Nintendo make DQ 1 - 2 - 3 on the WiiU , japan got an exclusive on the Wii. better yet I like to see DQ 1 - 2 - 3 released on a multicart., for now its only a dream.

    • @Speculativedude
      @Speculativedude 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@Bblurre Well the GB version easily cuts the grind time down by at least half. They literally double the amount of gold and Exp. that you get from each enemy. The mobile ports follow that same trend doubling both the gold and Exp. that the original game gave you. I'd recommend that mobile ports just for ease of finding them and honestly, the graphics are a nice plus.

I remember going into a Gamestop back when they still sold retro games and looked through the NES bin. The cart art design struck me and not knowing anything about it picked it up. I was entraced by it. I couldn't find 2 but 3 was released on the Gameboy color and loved it. Couldn't put it down. No SNES Meant no 4. 5 and 6 never came here and 7 and 8 were on Playstation and I was a Nintendo kid. I was so happy when I heard 9 was going to be on the DS (probably one of the few) and was sucked back in. Now I'm in the middle of playing through all the remakes and am happy I can play all the main games on Nintendo hardware. (I plan on getting XI for the 3ds when it comes here despite me having a PS4. Even though my experience is limited playing DQ games, the ones I have played I thoroughly enjoyed.

DQ8 was epic. Not just one of the best rpg's for the ps2, but one of the greats of all time. I agree w/HappyConsoleGamer. If you're new to Dragon Quest start off w/ DQ8. Your entry into the DQ franchise will begin w/ a bang, and make you want to play the older, dated games.

I think a good option would be emulating the first ones on pc after you buy a physical or digital (like nintendo e shop classics) copy.

I just started playing an import copy of the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII - it's my first Dragon Quest - and oh man, I'm already hooked. I'm about 15-16 hours into it so far and knowing that I've got another 100+ hours ahead of me is an amazing feeling! The soundtrack is to die for, too.

I think the monsters games are amazing, especially as starter games since they can be a bit more light hearted and easier. I remember I got into the series because of all the old Gameboy ports/games (1,2,3 Monsters 1 and 2) I'm currently playing through 6 for the first time and I really like it.

Long time Dragon Quest fan over here myself, not as long as HCG but I did start my adventure back during the PS1 era.. I have to say Dragon Quest 7 is a wonderful experience and a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the series.
The handheld games are great too, I've yet to dive too deep into 9 but all the videos I've seen on it make the game look fantastic.
I also suggest Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 1 & 2 for the DS if you're looking to expand into the series..Haters are going to hate but I messed around with them through roms on a R4 cart..Never got around to finishing them or again, getting too deep into either due to R4 cart bricking but it's another good series from what I experienced.
Every time I see physical copies I get the urge to buy them but for some reason always end up passing due to limited funds sadly.
With that being said I'm curious on HCG's opinion on DQMJ..I don't remember hearing him talk about the series.. Correct me if I'm wrong lol.. If he did it must of been too little to remember.

My first DQ was the remake of DQ1 for Snes. I played a translated version of the game on an emulator and it was magical! Since the game had both DQ1 and 2 I played them both in sequence. I hold them dearly to this day, specially since I didn't get any other DQ game until DQ8. I'm very happy that we have them all available for Android devices so I could finally buy them officialy. I highly recommend those ports for anyone who has a good tablet or a good phone, they're gorgeous and play very well! Just stay away from the DQ8 port. For this one I say it's mandatory to play on a PS2!

Dragon quest was my introduction into RPGs. I got it for free with my nintendo power sub. And fell In love. But 4, 4 is probably my fav nes game. Deff top 3. The way they structured that one made it a lot of fun and really made you connect with the group in a way that hadn't been done yet. I'll never forget seeing a little article in nintendo power that said 5 was coming soon for the snes , and they showed like one or 2 pics and I was so so excited, and then it never came out here :( . One of the things this series does is the awesome side games like "torneko the last hope" or other dragon quest heroes. Not new concepts gameplay wise, but they improve on them or change em a bit, and they always come out fun. Honostly can't think of one I wouldn't play.

Dragon Warrior Monsters :P Loved that game when I was younger.
Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior wasn't really a thing over here from what I know of at least until Dragon Quest VIII which was... 2008... so all of my stuff has been imported.
I keep a mini collection of games installed on a Raspberry Pi with an 8BitDo bluetooth controller at the ready to play the classics of years gone by. Its nice to dig through libraries that I didn't have access to back in the day.

I snagged the updated, emulated Dragon Quest III on SNES. It's great, 3 was always my favorite in my childhood on the NES. I always wanted the Japanese Super Famicom upgrade that was never released in the States, and I finally got it. English translated and all on an SNES cartridge. I would highly recommend! :D

I just recently became a Dragon Quest fan. I wasn't familiar with Dragon Warrior back in the day as I was strictly a Final Fantasy fan (which clearly used DW to begin their games). I have played a few of the games on the Nintendo DS system and I really enjoyed them. I believe there are 3 or 4 for that particular system so I may track them all down. I am now looking forward to VII and VIII coming to the 3DS this year. It's a fun franchise.

I've been replaying the first six games in preparation for the release of VII and VIII on the 3DS, neither of which I ever got around to playing. I think what really strikes me about the series is how unpretentious it is. Simple stories, graphics, and gameplay mechanics, along with memorable music and really charming characters (especially from IV onwards). I do think that IV on the DS is the best jumping in point, though playing from the beginning allows you to truly appreciate how the series evolved with each title. They're the kind of games that remind me why I got into gaming in the first place. :)

Dragon Warrior 1-3 on Gameboy Color was how I got started back in the day. Glad I was introduced to them on the Gameboy Color too, cause they simplified some of the menu mechanics after the NES version. (The concept of Context-Sensitive buttons was still new when the original came out.) So they were MUCH more fun for my on Gameboy Color. Otherwise they're pretty faithful to the originals.
In my opinion having played most of the games quite a bit (haven't finished many, though.), I think any of them are fine starts to jump into. I can't think of any reasons for any of them as to why they wouldn't be a good introduction, especially when Dragon Quest is one of the most traditional franchises out there when it comes to keeping their games faithful to their original design. They all pretty much play and feel the same, with some minor differences in mechanics. The stories vary quite a bit of course, but I don't personally think any are better than the others. People like whichever one appeals to their tastes more.
The only games I wouldn't personally suggest to start with are 9 and 10. I didn't like 9 as much as the others as I think it felt the most different, especially with it's focus on creating your own characters and trying to fit multiplayer mechanics in. 10 is of course the MMO, and I don't think MMOs really count as a good start for a franchise, unless of course you are a big fan of MMOs. Otherwise I don't like that Square Enix numbers their MMOs and think they should be seperated and considered spin-offs.
The Dragon Quest Heroes games are a very Your Mileage May Vary titles, just like the Warriors Franchise. A lot of people loathe Warriors games, even Hyrule Warriors or Fire Emblem Warriors, but others can tolerate the more repetitive nature or otherwise love them. I think the Dragon Quest Heroes games are better for people who already appreciate the franchise and want to play a game that celebrates the many games and their characters. Otherwise, maybe you're not big into RPGs but really like Action Games, then maybe it's worth trying for those people.

I love 1-4 as they were games that got me hooked on RPG's, why people who have never played any don't just want to start at the beginning and work your way in order through them all is beyond me. DWII is my favorite since it blew me away compared to the original game, I got it for Christmas 1990 and played the hell out of it. III and IV are great too.
