  • Growing seeds indoors is easy with a good seed starting setup. Start seeds in free containers, use a good seed starter mix, plan to help humidity around plants, and have grow lights and seed heat mats ready. Gardener Scott discusses these and more considerations for getting started with growing seeds indoors. (Video #128)

    I have a plastic tray I use in my tiny shop toilet room so I can close the door and have the temp around 75 or 78 degrees for germination with a thermostat milk house heater. I use 4 1/4 inch newspaper strips 8 1/2" long for starting pots wrapped around a form with a bottom folded over and glued with a wood glue. These will make little germination pots 2 1/4 diameter X 3" They are filled with starter mix medium for sprouting seeds. As soon as they are sprouted, I place them under 6500K fluorescent grow lights. I never turn them off for the duration. I pin silver "space blanket" strips to my light support frames to ensure my baby plants get maximum light so they grow straight and sturdy. With baby seeds I dose once a week with a weak mixture of 20% nitrogen fertilizer, like Miracle Grow of some other fertilizer, but the 20% is good for beginning root growth. As soon as I get around 2 or 2 1/2" of plant height, I transfer them to 24 oz cottage cheese containers that I save all winter that have drain holes melted into the bottoms. I cut and peel away the newspaper pots and place plants in these 24 oz containers. This potting mixture will contain potting mix, a bit of good compost, a dash of calcium nitrate, and watered with the same diluted miracle grow fertilizer once a week. The rest of the watering is just water as needed. I use a misting spray bottle for most of the early watering, then a small spouted watering jug of some sort. I always look out for these small spouted jugs at yard/ garage sales, usually had for no more than a dime or a quarter. About a week or two before they get their permanent summer home, I put them out in the natural sunlight for several hours if the day is warm and sunny in a wind protected " cold frame" box designed with sturdy corregated panels. I water if needed before I put them back indoors under the lights for the night or stormy, cooler next day. Yeah, you could say I baby my plants, but they are vastly superior the the junk you can find at even a good nursery outlet. I know, I've been caught behind and had to pick the "best" of the dregs of the plants I want. Some plants are totally root bound, water starved, and can be spindly and weak. Disappointing for the high prices one pays for plants. Electric bill is maybe close to cost of nursery plants, but they are way better quality by growing from seeds at home. My indie tomato plants can get to 5 and 6 feet tall and loaded with nice fruits, if suckers are removed. Make sure plants get enough calcium to prevent blossom end rot. Cheers, growers. Bob

    I'm ohio 6a, and a few years planted my peppers and tomatoes, and much on your advice even started about the same time.
    Yes, different locations, but I figured your better equipment I would be OK. Yes your plants did better but mine did OK. I planted out as my frost time was different and my peppers and tomatoes were about 4 to 6 weeks ahead of my neighborhood, and getting produced about an extra month was a great experience. Last year I started as sujust for 6a and only had average garden this season I'm again starting seeds on your early times

    we started using the standard garden trays a few years ago. the 72 cell seedling trays like you showed, the trays with 24 larger cells, etc. We love it! The standard sizes make things easy!
    If you are using random pots / containers: visit your local big box store. Try to get the plastic "racks" they use with 18 +/- round holes for pots. They usually have heaps. A garden center will usually be smart enough to re-use... but the box stores throw them out rather than send them back to Bonnie, etc....

    How long after germination should the peppers stay on the heat mat. Also how long should the dome for humidity stay over seedlings after germination. Thanks keep those awesome videos coming you are such a blessing to so much of us

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The heat mat is best for germination and can be turned off after the seedlings are actively growing. The dome is similar. It's best for keeping the soil moist for germination and can get in the way once the seedlings are growing.

      This works well for almost all seeds, especially flowers. Anything you buy in a nursery can be started at home. March is probably a good time for you, but it depends on the plant. Look at your seed packets and they should tell you the best time to sow.

  • @Randy_Smith

    Thanks for another one of your informative and easy to understand videos! I'm curious about whether you use a soil temp thermometer with your heat mats. Your vids have convinced me that I'm capable of trying my hand at starting seeds and I primarily grow peppers so I think a heat mat will be a good investment. Does a thermostat offer much value? Thanks again for for all the advice and instruction!

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While I do periodically check soil temp with a thermometer, the mats I use have a consistent pre-set temperature with no thermostat. My pepper seeds germinate much better with a heat mat and that is the primary reason I use them. They aren't as necessary for other seeds.

    • @GardenerScott

      Worm tea might provide enough nutrients. If the plants look like they're suffering before you put them out, you might need additional fertilizer. Thanks.

  • @nappynew
    @nappynew 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As always right on time. Thanks for this information. Questions, if you start in a 72 cell container you will have to move all 72 in larger containers so why not start them larger in the get go? I know you said you may not have the room but how else would you get around doing it? My biggest issue is knowing what to start when. When I think of my raised beds (I have 3 new 4x4’s with just myself and my husband) I want to plant lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, Swiss chard and carrots. But unfortunately I can’t all at the same time. So I want to be able to transition what plants when in order to have a good harvest. How soon should I have the lettuce, spinach and other cold winter crops out there before it’s too hot for them? I would like to get more then one head, more then a handful of spinach before it bolts but how is this done successfully. I know the weather is a big factor in this and it’s hard to say but I know for sure we will have “heat.” Should I just stick to summer crops? Thanks for all you do.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not all of the plants will germinate and (assuming you're not growing 72 of the same plant) those that do will germinate and grow at different rates. By starting with the tray you only use pots for successful seedlings and haven't wasted space for seeds that don't germinate. Some of the seedlings can go outside from the tray. It helps you schedule how you transplant. Definitely grow cool season plants. Most of them can handle frost so put some seeds out as soon as your soil thaws. Start some indoors at the same time and put them out a few weeks later.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. The best way to avoid the bugs is to be careful about what you bring into your grow area. By starting with new, sterile mix that you buy or make, you're unlikely to introduce pests. If you reuse potting soil that was outside for any time at all, you will probably be bringing some type of insect egg in.

    Do you have any recommendations for starting a plant from a clone, e.g., a cutting? I've used a mixture of ground from the yard and seed starting mix. I've taken cuttings from 4 different tree species, and my best rooting rate is about 75 percent. Some species have not taken root at a all.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've had pretty good success with cuttings using a blend of peat and perlite. Some people use just sand, some just peat, some just perlite. The key is to have a consistently moist, light medium. Your yard soil might be too dense, so your seed starting mix is probably good by itself.

  • @millicentrowan
    @millicentrowan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Woops! I just started some seeds in 4 inch deep containers using a seed starting mix of perlite and peat moss. As the seedlings grow, would it be sufficient to add diluted worm tea as a fertilizer, since I was not planning on potting on these seedlings until they were a decent size?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That should work. If the bigger seedlings start to yellow or look sickly, you might want to add other fertilizers.

    Is it ok to have potting soil mix (for transplants) under lights in the house? Never had a problem with seed mix as nothing really in it but worried about bugs etc being present in potting mix when growing on. I grow Chilli for example on my windowsill throughout their life as have no greenhouse and it's too cold in the UK to plant these outside.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure. After I transplant from seed starter to potting mix, I keep the plants under lights inside. Most go outside in the garden, but I'll often keep herbs growing inside.

      It depends on the plant and outside weather conditions, but some seedlings can be transplanted out once they have true leaves.

    @matthawkins4579 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, my question is, can you start seeds in say a 3" pot with potting soil for most of the pot but seed starting mix for the top inch or so. I have room for starting all that I want to grow next year in these bigger pots and don't really want to uppot them until I am ready to get them in the ground. I also need the bigger pot as my springs lately have been unpredictable so I need the room to allow me to keep them indoors until weather permits.

    Along with seed starting tray, liquid fertilizer was included. Is this necessary, helpful? This is my first attempt at starting seeds indoors. Love your channel!

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The fertilizer will not be needed for germination and starting seeds. Once the seedlings begin growing, the mix won't have enough nutrients so that's probably why the fertilizer was included. If you continue growing in that mix the fertilizer can be helpful, but if you transplant to larger pots or to the outside garden it probably won't be needed.

      @@GardenerScott Thanks my friend, I make sure my toms get enough calcium, in the form of ca nitrate or soluble gypsum and dose them about every two weeks as green fruits form to prevent BER. Toms are heavy feeders, as you know, so manure tea or a fertilizer of of equal NPK is usually good for me. I sometimes grow in pots (toms and squash) so I can train them where I want them to spread. Last season we had a cold snap warning, before the fruits were near ripe, so I moved my pots into the garage for a couple days 'til it got warmer over night. Oh yeah, I baby my plants, for sure !😁😁😁😄

    Great video. Very novice question for you. In choice of pots, must it have drainage? Can I start growing from seeds with a solid pot? I have so many solid pots (no holes on bottom) of all sizes it would be difficult to find the custom sizes of containers to match the size of my existing pots. If it would work, what seeds are the best to learn with? My conditions: small 4 inch pots, indoors, lots of natural light, and if I must transplant eventually it would have to leave my domicile 😔 which isn't preferred (unless I can move into a bigger pot). Thank you! 🙂

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! The primary reason for drainage is so the seed and plant doesn't get too wet and then rot. Most gardeners overwater their plants. You can use a solid pot, but there is little room for error and you need to constantly monitor the soil moisture. It's easier with small pots with holes. I suggest starting with seeds like lettuce and spinach to learn quickly.

      Seed packets are a great way to start. The packet should say the best way to sow and when. Plants that take a long time to grow and set fruit, like tomatoes and peppers, are best started indoors. Most of the other plants we grow in vegetable gardens can be directly sown.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fertilizer should be used very sparingly in the mix so that it doesn't burn roots. Strawberries can easily be planted in potting soil. Again, just a small amount of fertilizer in the potting soil is good; you can always add more after the plants get established.

      You can raise the lights higher as the plants grow. You want to be sure that the light reaches all of the leaves. I use the bigger, stronger lights when the plants get larger and they will be 10-12 inches above the plants. Much depends on how strong your lights are.

      Interesting idea, but I won't be doing a video on that because it is a myth. There are no female peppers and no male peppers. So, I have my seeds planted in my grow area. They have not sprouted yet. I was given lots of grow lights for christmas. So I thought, what the heck I’ll just hang 5 on each growing shelf I’m using. Here’s my question. Can I be using too many grow lights?

      While it is possible to have too many grow lights, it typically doesn't pose problems unless the heat generated from them dries out or burns the seedlings. The height should be good.
