  • Jeff & Sarah check out the historic parts of Truckee, Calif., which was established in the 1860s. They'll first start by talking about the 1891 shooting of Constable Jacob Teeter by Deputy James Reed and visit the place it happened.

My dad was born in Boca up the road a bit from Truckee in a railroad box car with his two brothers. My grandfather worked on the railroad and my grandmother fed the crew from the box car. When needed, the crew would attach the box car to a train and transport it to Roseville or Reno as needed. You can still see that boxcar on E. River Street at the locksmith address. If you notice, there are 24 windows on the side of the house on each side. When my dad was born, they joined two passenger box cars together and took out the joining exterior walls to make a larger box car house.

JEFF & SARAH TOO - LOVED THE STORY, I'M GETTING A LITTLE TOO OLD TO TRAVEL MUCH AND YOUR VISITS TO SO MANY INTERESTING
PLACES IS ALMOST AS GOOD AS BEING THERE IN PERSON. MY MOTHER'S DAD HAD A HANDLE BAR MUSTACHE AND SHE SAID THAT AS A
LITTLE GIRL SHE HATED TO KISS HIM WITH THAT BRUSH ON HIS LIP. THIS WAS AROUND 1925.

I never seem to think of my family as famous or very well known in the old west but they were in Klamath Falls, Oregon. My great grandfather Rufus Scudder Moore and his brother William S. Moore ran one of the largest Lumber Mills in the state. Klamath Falls History knows them with the Moore Park which has many recreational activities run by the city. Statues of Rufus and other historical sites are there. A running trail for you Jeff is used every year for competition. No one in the Moore family is left but me so all the property was given to the city by my great grandmother years ago. She came west as a baby on the Oregon trail. A lot of history to be researched by someone like you.

For months now, since discovering History Hunters (which I love), I've hoped you would feature Truckee. Last night, I thought about it even more and here it is! I was born - and lived the first few years of my life - there. I grew up in Lake Tahoe and lived there well into adulthood. I've so many fond memories between them both. My first home was the apartment off the back of the old Sierra Tavern building which is visible in your video. I've since written a novel which is set in Truckee during the latter part of the 19th-century. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you making this video and the other Truckee ones still to be posted. I'm currently living overseas and have not visited home in 5 years. Just hearing the rush of the Truckee River - it's song - brought tears to my eyes. Thank you, Jeff & Sarah! I am eagerly awaiting the Sierra Mountains Cemetery video - wondering if you will include the Catholic Cemetery just below it as well. Will comment on that next video too. A dear family friend is buried in the former one; he had a connection to it during his lifetime having been its ever-doting caretaker for a number of years.

Wow, we are honored to know this video had such a great effect on you. We didn't spend a lot of time in the Sierra Mountain Cemetery but tried to visit some of the interesting graves. We were unable to get to any other cemeteries because we next visited the Donner State Memorial Park and camp sites. From there we visited Genoa, Nevada so that's coming up, too! Thanks very much for watching and enjoying what we produce!

Having spent summers at the 1860's stage coach stop at Webber Lake, 26 miles north of Truckee, we would come into town once a week for groceries and an ice cream sundae at the soda fountain which I found still operating in 2015. As a kid my Mom would have us take the ferry from San Mateo to Oakland and then the train from Oakland to Truckee and then my Dad would pick us up and we'd drive to Webber. My parents honeymooned at Webber in 1946 and I spent my first summer there at barely a year old in 1949. For me it is sad to see Truckee so busy and such a tourist trap. Other points of interest: the hieroglyphs up near the old Donner bridge, the Great Wall of China built by the Chinese railroad workers, and you can even find parts of the old Lincoln Highway. So much history in only a few miles. Love your TH-cam videos of the area as it brings back many memories.

Thanks for the tour of Truckee. I always thought I knew a lot about Truckee. My dad and I often passed through Truckee on our way to going hunting in Plumas County to the north. We always got gas at the Flying A Station. Depending on our plans, we often had an early breakfast in Truckee, so when we got to Plumas
County we were all set to begin hunting. Your video proves I knew very little about Truckee no matter how many times I'd been through the town. Again many thanks. I was in the area in the 70s, doing research on the Donner party. There was a Donner Party monument that got lost during the building of the I-80 freeway through the area. I was so diligent in my searching I found the missing monument.

It's so awesome to see you go to a town that I've been going to ever since I was a kid. I live two hours away and go there at least once a year. My husband's family has a cabin a few miles from the historic downtown. We stayed for a week during Thanksgiving last year and there was lots of snow. We were snowed in for three days. We like to spend every Thanksgiving there if the cabin is available.
I didn't know alot of the details on the history in the downtown area, very interesting.
I love going pass Donnor Lake, up the summit and exploring the train tunnels, China Wall, and Petroglyphs. The Rainbow Bridge is neat too, beautiful views of the mountains and the lake. There's so much history in that one area.
The museum has lots of artifacts from the Donnor party, I don't know if it's open yet though. Hopefully you had a couple days to visit and will come back.
And I agree with Sarah, I couldn't live there with the snow in the winter lol. After a week my kids and I had enough of it and were ready to go back to the valley.

I have had the opportunity as a truck driver to deliver in the town of Truckee a few times over the last 40+ years and it’s always seemed busy! My only other comment is Truckee can be the coldest place in the USA in the winter!! For 5 years back in the 80s I had the weekly Reno run on Thursdays... and one time it was so cold that heat no longer came out of the heater in the truck because the engine inside temperature dropped below 100 degrees.. 5 miles up the hill towards Reno I started feeling heat again... things like that you never forget! 2thumbs up!👍👍

Thanks for sharing another informative video with us Jeff and Sarah.
I've been through Truckee several times but, stopped for a short visit only once. I and three other men were on our way home from Deer hunting up in Modoc County and decided to take the long way home. This was at evening time in October of 1983 I believe. There was snow on the ground and it was cold.
I don't know how this episode slipped past me when you uploaded it. Some how I missed the notification but I'm so glad I saw your episode on the Cemetery in Truckee and went back to find this episode.
    Thanks again.

Great Job! a lot of history in town I didn't know. How time goes by. I have video of my dad , mom, and sister at Donner Lake in the 1960's. My Dad loved Donner lake and we knew people who lived there year round. What Memories of Water Skiing on the lake back in the 60's and 70's. My Dad was retired S.F.P.D. police inspector, and he built a cabin mile from Donner Memorial. Lost my Dad in 2012, and my mom. All the older people back then all gone. Sad for me looking back. I remember when it was snowing and the lake and area snow everywhere, and I swam across the lake when I was 15 years old. They said it couldn't be done. I did on a bet. Swam across the lake, and was blue, shaking, took warm shower and they gave me shots of Whiskey at the bar. Seemed like things were forever, and you turn around and all is Gone. Thanks, enjoyed that.

Great video. Genealogy research is my hobby. Which caused me to dig up some more information (tentative) on Jacob Teeter as follows: i.) born 1834 in Columbia NJ (close to Belvidere NJ); ii.) living in Michigan with mom, dad and siblings in 1850 (according to US census); iii.) signed up for US Army in Binghamton NY in 1863 (according to US muster rolls); iv.) served as a private in NYS 16th Heavy Artillery and then transferred to NYS 6th Heavy Artillery; v.) his unit did not fight at Gettysburg but instead got there after the battle and were responsible for burying the dead; vi.) Jacob's unit fought at the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania, the Battle of Cold Harbor, the Siege at Petersburg, and the Battle of Cedar Creek.
I think that you get the point. Jacob Teeter was a real person who comes alive when you learn about his life and history.
    Keep up the good work!!!!!

Truckee is a very beautiful anytime of the year. It has kept it's historic past very much and it's a great place to visit. The river that flows through the town isn't like other rivers, it runs through the Sierra's all the way to Reno, NV. I was stranded in a blizzard coming over the summit and hunkered down in Truckee for a while. Truckee gets a lot of snow in the winter and early spring.
