  • Our theme for TEDxDelMar 2011 was "A Search For A Cure". In this video, Dr. Butler gives us his talk entitled "Preserving Your Beta Cells".
Peter Butler is Chief Director, Larry Hillblom Islet Research Center at UCLA and professor of medicine at UCLA where his research interests include arresting loss of beta cell mass and promoting beta cell formation.
After obtaining his MD at the University of Birmingham, UK in 1980, Dr. Butler underwent training in internal medicine in Edinburgh and Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. He then underwent training in Endocrinology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and then at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN where he was also a research fellow. He was then appointed to a clinical faculty position at Mayo Clinic in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He was also the Associate Director of the General Clinical Research Center and led an NIH funded research program. After six years on the faculty at the Mayo Clinic he was appointed to the Chair of Diabetes at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland where he established the first Clinical Research Center in the UK. He returned to the USA in 1999 when he was appointed to Chief of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension at the University of Southern California moving to the University of California, Los Angeles in 2002. At UCLA he has established the Larry Hillblom Islet Research Center, a free standing building that houses investigators with a wide range of skills focused on revealing the mechanisms of beta cell loss and potential regeneration in people with type 1 and 2 diabetes. He is director of the LHIRC islet isolation and physiology core. He is the Editor in Chief of the journal Diabetes. He is also the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension. His clinical practice at UCLA focuses on care of patients with diabetes.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

I'm new to this, but really love the young people doing research on this topic which will bring good results.
    Thank you Dr. Butler.

Funny, but the "young people" are pretty much all foreign students. I guess US resident students are not allowed to this party.

Thanks for helping me understand. My husband has T2 and my son was recently diagnosed with T1 & I couldn’t wrap my head around it. This makes it so much easier.

If an 82 yo type 1 pancreas still makes new beta cells, it is encouraging news for all ppl who loves carbohydrates (not just for type 1 DM : ) , but it also tells us his inflammation against beta cell never was controlled. It seems that anti-inflammation therapy should play a role in diabetic management. Thanks for your information.

Very interesting talk about beta cells still being made, even into old age, but I didn't hear anything about a process for preserving beta cells.

I would think it not so very hard to find out why the beta cells are being attacked and where new beta cells come form. How can that be so very hard to find out?

Amost always a result of a childhood vaccine. Not 100% of the time but pretty close. You will also see it is almost always boys. These stats are kept hidden. No one wants to believe this but you will see almost zero incidence of T1D PRIOR to childhood vaccines. Not zero but close. You'll seldom find T1D amongst the Amish who do not vaccinate their children.

@@pillsber Just curious if you have a source to the types of vaccines or what you may have come across to back this claim? Doing some research for myself and any insight you may have would be appreciated

Consciousness shopping & meal prep. Less to nil sodium, sugers, fried, dairy, preservative, additive base foods & liquids. Including green, protein, fruit shakes in diet (on the go) less eat-out/ takeaways and not over-ordering e.g (skipping the fries, soda with a burger) as before

I have not given up. My Pancreas is making some Insulin but not enough. I keep thinking is they grew when I was young... why can't they regrow again? Nothing is impossible.

It is possible to preserve remaining beta cells with a low carb diet, since hyperglycemia is toxic to those cells. :) it's been working with my daughter. Her c peptide levels have even increased.

@@marianafaria6960 WOW Thanks for this most wonderful comment. My out of touch Diabetic Dr. keeps telling me 'It is only going to get worse" and he does not and will not measure Cpetide or any other Insulin test. He wants me to get worse. I am out smarting him. lol. I am preserving beta cells & I just know they will grow. My primary will do the needed test to prove it. Go back to her in Nov. for next Insulin test Only reason I went back to my Diabetic/Endo Dr. was to get on the CGM Dexom5. Turned out that only and Endo Dr. could order it. Dexcom5 is great. Thanks again for the encouragement.

@@OrasSelection you are welcome. We never know how a comment on TH-cam will be received. Look up Dr. Richard Bernstein. He has an amazing book (Diabetes Solution) and a series of videos on TH-cam. He himself is type 1 diabetic and is a source of information inestimable. His patients and people following his approach have a group on Facebook called Type One Grit. They share incredible stories of almost perfect glycemic control. Check them out too.

@@marianafaria6960 Thanks. I have Dr. Richard Bernsteins book and a variety of Diabetics Books. My 2 fav You Tube Dr's . Dr. Berg and Dr. Stein Ekerg. Edberg is the one who made me aware of the Dawn Phenomeon. My DP is huge. Last from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. I'm waiting on Type One Grit to invite me in. Funny thing is I chose the Diabetic Dr. I have because his Bio says he has been Type 1 since he was 12. My primary says I'm Type 2 and Endo says I'm Type 1. Best words I heard from a nurse. Research Research Research. I do believe I was pre diabetic for a while without knowing but stayed in check. Had my one and only child when I was 40. I have read that the Mother passes on Islet's to the baby.
Noticed a BIG sugar problem 2 years later and the story goes on :-)

Doesn't blood type matter in diabetes...everyone is different, yet ALL circumstances are not being addressed properly in the first place.EX.pregnant women versing a male, the male versing the female in general.LETS NOT FORGET...THE DESTRUCTION OF THE IMMUNIZATIONS BEING GIVEN TO CHILDREN IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF LIFE ,DIRECTLY TARGETING THE DESTRUCTION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM.
