Get started with Permaculture: Plant Trees

  • In permaculture, trees are at the heart of the design. Trees are oxygen givers, and therefore the giver of life. In the immediate context of rainwater management, trees are important because the roots of the trees open up the soil and build porosity of the ground. Porous soils absorb and soak up water. So rainwater management and tree plantation really go hand in hand.
    Trees are miners. They mine minerals from deep within and carry them into their foliage.
    Trees also fix nitrogen. Trees help to create a micro climate. Trees give us fruit and medicine. Trees provide a habitat for other species like birds and small animals, who in turn play an important role within the ecosystem. The roots of the trees hold the soil in place, and prevent erosion in the case of heavy rain. The foliage also acts like a big umbrella softening the impact of heavy downpour and preventing it from beating down on the soil. They also give biomass like leaves, twigs, flowers and branches, which fall to the ground and decompose, increasing the organic matter in the soil.
    Over time, trees come together to increase the precipitation on the land.
    We have planted over 6000 trees at Aanandaa. We started with making a tree list across fruit, native, medicinal and flowering trees. Then we designed the plantation plan - what to place where. It took us 3 - 4 months to dig all the pits, and also reinforce them with cow manure and bone meal. Finally, when the monsoon arrived, we invited our family and friends to join us for a mega tree plantation festival!

    What type of wind breaking trees you suggest in central India

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That varies from tree to tree, depending on ita full grown size. In central India you can plant Teak as a wind break

    Namaskaram! Could this circular pattern for the trees also work in a situation where there are swales 5meter apart. I recollected from my PDC that zig zig will work but I'm curious if a circular pattern can also be done in between swales. I like this circular pattern. Thanks. Pranam 🙏🏽

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Swales are dependent on water flow. Tree plantation depends on sun movment. Try to read both, and then plant the trees

    Ma'am...you are saying that we should plant the trees before starting agriculture... I've a doubt...should we design watering system before planting the trees?because they have to tolerate the heat too...hiw to save them? Thank you in advance ma'am... After watching your videos... I've understood that mulching is important...along with mulching how to water those saplings..kindly guide me ma'am

      Manually dug pits are always preferable over JCB. But if you have no option, then go for JCB.

    Mam, if we plant small trees away from bigger trees, to enable the small trees to get enough sunlight, we may end up in leaving much open space between them. What can be the solution to this? Are there any varieties of smaller trees that can grow in the shadow of big trees.?

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All plants need light for some hours in a day. You have to stack the trees. You'll learn more about it in our online courses.
