- That Smell, from the album "Street Survivors".
Released: October 17 - 1977
Three days after the album was released, the band was devastated by a plane crash killing several members including Van Zant.
Van Zant's inspiration for the song was the increasing reckless indulgences of the band members culminating in the evening when guitarist Gary Rossington got drunk and high and survived the crash of his new car into an oak tree along Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, Florida (where the band was founded). Van Zant was thus inspired to write the song as a warning about the consequences of careless overuse of drugs and alcohol.
Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink fool, will drown you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Whiskey bottles.. That smell...
Oak tree, your in my way
Theres to much coke and to much smoke
sums it up street survivors
Like I said..I didnt read down far enough.
I knew someone had to pick up on that Old Oak Tree.
He and those in front 'might' of survived if the plane didnt hit it... Well never know but it sure was a main factor. Thx for the like.
Oh that smell! What the HELL is that SMELL!?
Just heard the last original member, Gary Rossington, has passed away. What a fantastic guitarist he was!! This song was inspired by a car crash he survived, a year before the fatal plane crash which he also survived. RIP Gary. You now can join your band mates once again. Rock in peace!!
Hell yeah man life's a garden dig it brother....
I hear if you go on Gene Odom's Lynyrd Skynyrd/Jacksonville Tour, he'll take you down the road Gary was driving on when he had the car wreck that has been immortalized in the song "That Smell". Gene will even show you where the dazed and confused Gary ran off the road plus the house he struck and partially destroyed before his car eventually ran smack dab into the trunk of an old oak tree that finally brought the demolished car to a complete stop! I think he split the trunk of the tree, but he didn't kill it or himself. :) During this tour, Gene will take you to "Shanty town" and show you the old Van Zant home where Ronnie grew up and the baseball field where Ronnie hit the foul ball that hit Bob Burns square in the head and knocked him out. (Ronnie thought he had killed him). As a result of this mishap, Ronnie, Bob, and Gary discovered their mutual love for music, and this led to the formation of the band "My Back Yard" that would later become "The 1 Percent" before eventually becoming Lynyrd Skynyrd. Gene will also take you to the cemeteries and show you where everybody is buried (and this will now include Gary). He used to take you to the building that was once the store where Curtis Loew hung out (BTW, Curtis Loew was not his real name). However, I think that building has now been demolished, but you can see the lot. I'm not sure if he'll take you to the place that once was the bar that they used to call "The Jug" (in the song "Gimme 3 Steps"), but you can ask. He might even take you to Leonard Skinner's old real estate office. If you tip him well, I'm sure you will get to see more. Anyway, I hear it is a really good tour to take if you are in Jacksonville, have a bit of free time, and happen to be a super-fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
There’s nothing we can do but live on
@@edcollins9377your not fooling me Gene!
I had the original cover shot of Steve Gaines in the fire. I inherited it, the vinyl record, it was in perfect shape. I gave it to a friend of mine who fucking loved Skynyrd. He was diagnosed with liver disease, so to lift his spirits, I gave it to him. He loved it, and couldn't believe someone would do that for nothing in return. He died a few months later, but loved that album. I was glad to give it to him, he appreciated it more than me. RIP Ronnie Rudd, man u we're a great friend man.
So after he died you never got it back?
That's awesome. A very nice gesture. I'm sure he was appreciative
J S I bet it was buried with him

Once a gift is given it belongs to the givee, or recipient. What they do with the gift is no longer an issue. If the album ended up in a donation to the Salvation Army thrift store, so be it. C’est la vie.
RIP salute to the dead but never forgotten
"Now they call you prince charming, can't speak a word when your full of ludes, Say you'll be alright come tomorrow, but tomorrow night might not be here for you." THAT SHIT HITS HARD 🤙
Qualudes
But its true Dude,,, So true . FUCKING great song .
Makes me think of that scene in Wolf of Wall Street where Jordan takes the Ludes and can't talk 🤣

Same effect as the opioid's but not as addictive. Also proof that if they want to stop a drug they bloody well can do it. @@whodatn4l948
RIP Gary Rossington. The legend of Skynyrd will live on.
The ripping guitar solo and instrumental after the verses make this song one that I crank every time I hear it on the radio! Probably my favorite Skynyrd tune!
Yeeeesss!!!
@@moniquelozano3935 .......Yeeeah !
You hear this on the radio ??
@@lukeyshawilliams2778 Every once in a while. We have some great FM stations, and even our local AM radio station changed formats a little and play some great tunes! When I hear Wayward Son by Kansas at the grocery store, Sweet Child O' Mine at another grocery store and a Van Halen II album cut at Home Depot, I know I'm getting old!!!LOL!
I rip a line to it
Black guy here, love this band👏👏👏👍👍👍😃😃😃
Black or white brother we all love great music 🎶

RIP Gary!
One of the top five if not #1 rock song of all time. God I pray you have all of these boys with you.
freebird# 1
He does Terry. No doubt. I'm sure they all prayed when the plane was going down and were heard. I believe we all would had a few things to say to God, and he listened. I truly believe that. Love&Peace
Terry Harris God is merciful I feel they are resting in peace
Simple man #1
Rest In Peace Gary Rossington. It’s painful losing all of your friends and being the last survivor but it’s also a blessing for each breath that God gives you.🙏🙏🙏
Rest peacefully Gary Rossington !! You are reunited with Ronnie, Cassie & Steve once again. I am sure you three are making beautiful music in heaven.
One of the best rock tunes ever made!!!!
I remember THAT smell...the smell of escape from my private little corner of madness. But who would ever stop to see the tears while I stood out there in the storm...would it be the men who pulled over to say "pull over gurl - that ass too fat" or perhaps the doctors at the hospitals, jails and institutions could prescribe a cure for the blues in my soul. But there is no cure for addiction, despair, grief, trauma...there is only a coming to the crossroads in your life where you decide to start working with a higher power than yourself instead of against it. There is beauty in the moment when you pray that you have eyes to see it and ears to hear it...only then can we find some sort of peace that doesnt require an IV route to the heart
I hope that youve found peace.
I remember that smell too. I remember more the moment when I finally surrendered to Him, when I fell down on my knees, tears and mucus running down my face, the saddest I’ve ever felt and said Take these broken wings Lord, I give up, I can’t do this anymore. I don’t want to die in my addictions.
He heard me. I’m free!
Now that pot is legal, you don't have to worry about the wafting smell of marijuana smoke reaching the police.
@@foureyedchick seems to be the solution to problems these days. Instead of cleaning up oneself, let's fight to legalize the very substances destroying us, validating your stupidity.
Wow. You moved me
My uncle served in the marines, and when the first gulf war took place, his platoon was accompanied by a film crew as they were pushing thru iraq , filming the chaos and they set the short film to this song . It was freakin awesome! My uncle passed away last week. So had to come here to hear the song and reminisce, of him showing us the video when he got back, drinkin & havin a good time..
need to post that video asap, sounds badass!
Just think, a single tree changed rock and roll forever.
And the words "Oak tree in my way" were written before the oak tree got in their way. It's wild!
Watching from Greece.hi everybody.
This is the best song of the mighty Lynyrd Skynyrd.period.
THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN.

This song is deeper than I anticipated.
In a good way.
Rip Gary Rossington last member founder. Great songs Lynyrd Skynyrd Forever.
RIP Gary Rossington, who died today at 71 years old.
Hell yea Rip
One of my Favorite Songs, Love the Guitar in this Song
Greatest song written by them and written for Gary R. Ironically longest survivor just recently passing.
written in 1977 and just as relevant today as in 1977
I think this song is about a negetive outlook on taking drugs and its toll on your body....one of my favourite skynyrd songs.
"Angel of Darkness is Upon You
Stuck a Needle in Your Arm"
(You fool you) Love Skynyrd! At 61yo I've done it all in the song. I thank the 3 Gargoyle Bitches I pray to and ask them to do little things for me for keeping me alive all these years.. lol.. Stopped all that foolishness after I slayed my Monster.. Sweet Home, Skynyrd!!
Great musicianship. Never gets old
Simple yet profoundly deep.
God is there for you if you let Him

This is a masterclass of songwriting, fantastic lyrics backed up by superb vocals and all-round musicianship. These guys were and are the best band that ever existed. If that plane hadn't gone down god knows what we could of listened to, sad sad loss. Was on a bus home from work when I heard they'd crashed, saddest trip in my life couldn't think straight, went home, changed and straight to the pub to drown my sorrow's, miss them to this day. RIP Ladies & Gentlemen..RIP !!
2024 and loving it. Thanks mom n dad
Fuck time flies! Great music is long dead
Banda fodástica! Brasil na escuta. 😊
I got rid of "that smell" about 13 years ago... but its still ALL around me... everywhere I go, and especially every day at work... I can still smell it.
Oh God this song reminds me of my brother. He succumbed to addiction, and you could just see it...that smell terrifies me.
Hunny that smell reminds me of pamper bottoms that don't respect their mama n still wanna call shots. I say let's all go red carpet or burgundy n trust in the Lord n well all be alright
The break with all three guitars always satisfies! 👊🏼
RIP Gary Rossington, last original member of Skynyrd. On a happier note, Skynyrd reunion on the other side tonight!!
Tomorrow is not a Guarantee for All of Us!
When i listen to “THAT SMELL”…well…so do my neighbors.
IMHO…THE Greatest rock song in the history of R & R.
I did not know all of these lyrics, in spite of owning the album. Amazing after all these years.
I did not know half the lyrics either despite listening to the song since it was released. Has so much more meaning now. Just saw Skynard in St Louis a few weeks ago. RIP to all of the members and rock on and kick ass in heaven ! ❤️
"That smell, that smelly smell...that smells" Mr. Krabs
People think, that Song is Hallelujah for drugs, but on The controry. Very good Song, like all Lynyrd's songs!!! 😀😀😀😀
Lol... You'd have to be pretty dense to think this is a pro-drug song.
So much truth in this song!!🎶
EPIC LYRICS, LIVED THIS WILD FEARLESS LIFESTLYE FROM 1983-1994. I THANK THE ALMIGHTY GOD ABOVE FOR GUIDING ME THROUGH THESE WILD OUT OF CONTROL YOUNGER YEARS. MARCH 24. 2023

Ooooh that smell, can’t you smell that smell 🎶 classic 🖤😉👼💫
Absolutely the best....yugens ya'll need to listen...pure talent
Not the crap they call music today it's just noise
My whole life both my parents have been addicts. I havent spoken to my mom in years listening to songs about addiction make me feel a way i cant explain. For anyone battling that monkey on your back your family still loves you and you can make it right even if you feel its over. Rip skynyrd
This is a little bit eerie. I've heard over and over that their plane was gliding over soft pine trees, and maybe would have been ok, if, until it hit the oak tree. For real.
ΑΓΑΠΗΜΕΝΟ, ΑΡΙΣΤΟΥΡΓΗΜΑ! ΕΠΙΚΟ!
I saw them in Tampa Florida , and Ronnie said to us well you still remember me and he said it three times, and I just wonder if he thought this would be his last time playing, however they did the concert in S.C. and then that day their plane crashed. Was he trying to tell us we would never see them again. I miss them All So Very Very Much and it's now 2001. RIP.
How could you not love this song..ooh that smell!! #greatmusiccoversthemasses

Man go worry about COVID.. some of us love those smells
Anybody know what that smell really means.. don’t look back, and don’t let the smell hook you. Song true to the words.. oh you fool you.. 35 years later and I’m still walking forward.. no way to get yo”kicks. Nope no way. Dead end road. Don’t do drugs kids.. it isn’t a party at all. But lynard skynard puts on the greatest live shows EVER. Including LITA FORD.. that women can belt a cord.. ✌️💜🎸 can’t take the 60”s out of a grown women.. even if I worship God now.
This is about as good as it gets
My fave from Lynyrd Skynyrd; definitely a country-rock vibe here
Starts out with the original cover art Street Survivor. They soon changed it after the plane crash. Still have the original.
I thought that the Wolf of Wall Street had a phenomenal soundtrack, but it should have included this song. "Can't speak a word when you're full of the ludes!" It fits too well!
Also, "Oak tree, you're in my way!" Sounds like something that someone drunk and coked out of their mind would yell after wrapping their car around said oak tree and somehow surviving. I'm picturing Jordan Belfort just bellowing at an oak tree.
It was Gary Rossington that was drunk and coked out and hit an oak tree.
"STEEEEEVE MADDEN!"
I know that smell 'cause I've had it on me. Still here to speak of it, somehow. Just dumb luck or divine intervention, perhaps. This song hits the bullseye...love that screamin' guitar!
My roots this song reminds me of my dad yeah sad but true.
Same here girl, same here
Thanks for sharing. Great song.
Tomorrow wasn’t here for some loved ones
I always thought he was saying the smell of gas around you from the plane crash very well written SONG
Superb sound.
Ronnie wrote this about Gary rossington. Gary was fucked up and crashed his car a few days before they were to tour
Not often can will someone who's up to no good listen to anyone. It takes someone they respect who has been up to no good. This is the song
those were thebest of times for me.i was 18 in 77.and one more blow for my nose.man I gotta say I wouldn't change a thing.glad I knew my limtations then.
Love that part when they go "Hell Yeah!" 😂
R.i.p cuzo Gabe you was going to rehab that day you wanted to feel that feeling for the last time you been gone a lil over a year forever missed
joe dirt when he gets his "hemi"
Vibes
The smell of dirt and death has to go away
Great band!. There will never be another!!
Honestly at first I was surprised that this song was written about Gary, and what happened I mean you think of him as the baby of the band... at the time, but boy was he a man when it came to his guitar solos and in general... amazing song shame it came to a crashing end nonpun intended R.I.P. hope to see u in the next life
Steve Gaines was a freaking amazing guitar player!
My favorite guitarist RIP . This song is still playing and takes over a crowd 7-20-2024 4:08pm
This song was written by Ronnie about Gary after Gary got into a car accident
Ronnie seen it coming. That's why this song was written. I could only imagine Ronnie having a sit down with Gary about cheating death.
Ronnie wrote it because Gary crashed a car into a tree, drunk, smacked, and high on qualudes.
Some people just feel it in their gut. He definitely knew it was coming.
I forgot how good this song is ❤️🩹
Oak Tree, you’re in my way.
BLM protests you're in my way
I like the dual guitars at 5:05 between Steve Gaines and Allen Collins.
Great song 🎶
My grandmother inlaw used to always ask me, To play this on my phone, She passed away this year., Now all the time I hear this song all like I think about is her❤
Great music 🎼🎶🎶 🎵
Met Van Zant in JAX FLA.
Those pitch harmonics, the guitar 🎸 in the intro
Still living the dream responsibily
Most ppl think it's a yay drugs song,it's an anti drugs song. R.I P we still miss you
Isn’t it ironic the band member this cautionary tale was written for went on to be the longest surviving member. 🎸
RIP😢 this was my grandmother in laws song all the time I went over she asked me to play this on my phone over and over 😊😊😊 she'd jut say play the smell song 😢😢😢😢
Oooooh....That Smell.....done all the drugs they are talking about in this Great song💥
"...the smell of deaths surrounds you..." Very prophetic since the song was released 3 days before their plane crash.
Gotta get rid of that smell. One of my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd songs !!
Cuban love this song
The best song of all time
