  • Can you travel long distances with a Honda CRF300L Rally? Is the Honda CRF300L Rally a good bike for touring? This video documents my 1000 mile ride from Everett Washington to Missoula Montana on a 2021 Honda CRF300L Rally. Hours of highway riding, backroads riding & off-road light adventuring through: Steamboat Rock State Park, Hanford Reach, & Beverly ORV.
    Bike has a Garmin Zumo XT & a Nelson Rigg Tank Bag, otherwise it's completely stock.
    Video gear used: DJI Mini 2, GoPro Hero9

    What an epic journey--great videography, great music and it really shows what the CRF 300 Rally is capable of, although I am sure a bit more relaxed touring (versus high speed highway) would be its sweet spot. Still, though, the fact it was able cruise at higher speeds than what you'd typically go on this bike is impressive indeed. I love NW Montana (have been to Missoula and North of there on multiple occasions), and you need to be going 85 or so not to get run over up there. Great riding--thanks for producing this!

Ended up getting a decent deal on the 250 I have. I loved this video, it inspires me to get out even more, but I can’t imagine getting my 250 up to 80mph or spending any serious time on an interstate. I don't have direct experience with the 2017 Rally so I can't directly comment on how it compares with that. I will say though that I did dyno test the bike (you can find the video on my channel) and it makes about 28 hp at the crank so not a whole lot of power. The bike did fine at the higher speeds but was at its limit - I think the more natural cruising speed of the bike is around 70-75 mph. Glad to hear that the video inspires you👍

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd have to agree with your reasoning here - The Rally does seem like a good bike to pair with a camper for traveling + exploration. I'd also say that the Rally is a ridiculously easy bike to ride: Low seat height, low weight, light clutch, hard to stall, won't wheelie on power, & relatively smooth power delivery makes it a great first bike. I was surprised how much the weather changed and how powerful wind can be. 38 degrees in fog to over 100 degrees. 38F in fog is Freaking cold!! haha. The aero of the bike makes a big difference, I have a windshield installed and used some cardboard to block off some areas. Its awesome being exposed to nature on a bike. A great video and very relaxing.The little guy did very well considering all the freeway/highway riding for hours on end, hour after hour. You had a few breaks for off road riding which must have broken the monotony. For me I would like some thing with just a little more power riding those large distances on the highway, but not a huge amount of weight whilst still retaining the light feel for when off road. The US is a beautiful country and big!

      Yeah, I'd actually agree with you that the bike could use a bit more power. As I see it though, there is no alternative motorcycle currently available that would work better for my needs. If Honda comes out with a CRF450L Rally with long service intervals, I'll be first in line🍻

    • @BruceHoult
      @BruceHoult 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      65 to 70 is perfectly smooth and comfortable. I personally wouldn't do 75+ for extended periods on mine because of vibrations and increased fuel consumption (and the highway speed limit here is 62), but then it's only the 250 not the 300 (286). Also note that 65 mph very near maximum torque, so you've got plenty in reserve for hill climbing or acceleration, which you don't past 75.

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The large windscreen, fairing, 6th gear, rubber inserts on the pegs, and the bar end weights really make this more comfortable then you might think. I also own a Yamaha WR250R and that would have been a much, much more uncomfortable trip using that bike (I'm guessing that would be somewhat similar to your XT600 as it's got no windscreen or fairing but it does have a 6th gear)

    • @BruceHoult
      @BruceHoult 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I was a little less than half my current age I had an XR600 which was a monster off road but killed me riding even two hours on the road. I've done a few mixed tarmac and gravel and worse 200+ mile days on my 250 Rally and I'd be ok with 300 on the highway. A thousand miles in 36 hours does seem a little extreme. I'd definitely get a different seat first. And it would be summer-only, unlike my BMW.

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion, 1000 miles in 36 hours is not an easy task on any motorcycle, not even on a touring motorcycle. That is what makes it worth doing for me though, that's what makes it memorable - the fact that it's hard.

      I have actually just done a similar ride this last week, riding 1200 miles in 36 hours on the Honda. I felt fine after riding that distance and was ready to go the next day. I don't have a problem with riding this bike all day. Rider comfort is a really subjective thing though so your mileage may vary.

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually felt totally normal the next day (in fact I went riding). It's worth pointing out though, that I use my motorcycles as my main source of transportation. Commuting, errands, pretty much everything and in all weather conditions. I probably have more daily seat time on a bike than a typical rider (at least here in the states). If I didn't ride as much my guess is that the 1000 mile trip would have been far more uncomfortable.

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Appreciate it! I had no issues with the vibrations of the bike even while riding hours at high speed. The bike does have more vibrations at higher RPM but the bar end weights and rubber inserts in the foot pegs smooth things out a bit. I was comfortable on the seat for about 5-6 hours before I'd start to get uncomfortable. Riding 12 hour days though is not easy/comfortable - this is just one of those push through it type of moments.

For my normal around town riding I usually get around 68mpg. High speed interstate definitely lowers the fuel economy though, while riding from Utah to Washington I got around 50 mpg traveling at 75+ mph (This route also crossed two mountain ranges which made the fuel economy even worse)
