Homeless and Working: Eric's Daily Battle in Grants Pass, Oregon

- Meet Eric, a hardworking individual stuck in an unforgiving cycle of homelessness in Grants Pass, Oregon. Despite holding a part-time job at a pizza place, Eric is unable to escape the relentless criminalization of homelessness that plagues the city. Grants Pass has made it illegal to be homeless, forcing individuals like Eric to move their encampments every three days. This harsh reality, combined with the challenges of paying child support and trying to save money, makes it nearly impossible for Eric to get back on his feet.
Eric's story highlights the absurdity of criminalizing homelessness. As the homelessness crisis grows, so do the encampments, exacerbated by policies that push people from one park to another. This constant upheaval not only destabilizes lives but also strains community resources.
Grants Pass, Oregon, has come under intense scrutiny for its harsh criminalization of homelessness, particularly highlighted in the Johnson v. Grants Pass Supreme Court case. This landmark case challenges the city's policies that effectively make it illegal to be homeless, such as ordinances prohibiting camping in public spaces and the issuance of fines and citations to those without stable housing. The case has ascended to the Supreme Court, symbolizing a critical moment in the national debate over how cities handle homelessness. Advocates argue that criminalizing homelessness only exacerbates the problem, leading to larger encampments and further marginalizing an already vulnerable population. The case underscores the urgent need for compassionate, evidence-based solutions like affordable housing and support services instead of punitive measures.
The only way to truly eliminate homeless camps is to support evidence-based solutions like housing and comprehensive support services. Eric's resilience and determination amidst these challenges are a testament to the need for compassion and real solutions, rather than punitive measures.
Watch Eric's emotional journey and understand why the criminalization of homelessness is not just ineffective but inhumane. Join us in advocating for policies that provide real support and housing, not just tickets and harassment.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

It IS a cruel war. I live in a Van & I know how they treat me. Call the cops for doing nothing but maybe loitering then get banned from ever going there again but they knew the direness of my story yet they could care less. People call on you, your animal who is fine, cruel hateful, jealous people!! 🤬🤬
This is so sad. The government picking on homeless people ALL over this country. Shame on them!
For some reason, the authorities think that harassing homeless people will end homelessness
This agenda is a long game and has been planned.🍀
They just want the homeless to go somewhere else so they don’t have to deal with it
They also keep wages low to have a group of ready, desperate slaves
We know how to solve homeless
It’s called housing first. It’s expensive, time consuming and humane.
Agree
He could go to the mission. They’ll also help him get housing.
Homelessness should not be classified as a crime!!
This is absurd cruel and unusual punishment.
It isn't.
Yes, it is!
We are living in a sick country and to criminalize homelessness is crazy.
Also criminalize dads who don’t pay child support while he is homeless he is paying another woman who probably has a roof over her head. While he is in a tent.
They are not criminalizing people for being homeless. They get tickets for breaking the law.

The federal government should bring back the civilian conservation corp. Let veterans run it and employ people who are currently homeless

Think it’s worse he is homeless and has to pay a woman child support while she probably has a roof over her head. And then if ya don’t pay you go to jail! You woman should know. Your probably living off another man’s child support.
The predatory practices of police and courts are nothing new.
@@77D777Well, who knows… that child support maybe helping her from being homeless. What would be good is for her to allow him to stay with them.
Or just follow the rules and you stop getting tickets.

This thing we call"Federal Government" need to help people like this man
Not lazy 🦥 people and foreign countries.
Some people would call this man "lazy."
And if you knew Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), you would know that the Federal government doesn't have to leave the American people in the lurch. They have a lack of political will.
Anyone who's working and homeless deserves a break. A working person has a contributing attitude.
Exactly. Deserves housing and medical care
Good point.😮
As do veterans
Boy do they kick you when you're down.
Forever hitting people with fines and tickets 🎟 they obviously can't afford.
Not even the homeless are exempt. 😳
They could make themselves exempt by following the rules. If I was trying to avoid a ticket I wouldn't have a tent that is too big. Seems like an easy way to avoid a ticket.

I am in the same boat! Homeless and working! Despicable, greedy world. Trying not to hate people in this world making me homeless and unable to afford a place to live.

It is hard to not hate the homeless when you walk you child through a park and find dirty needles. I know not all homeless are bad but the bunch that are in our parks sure do give the good guys a bad name.
How can it be illegal to be homeless, as if they chose this lifestyle 😔. It's a crime how homeless people are treated, like criminals. Even the real criminals are treated better. At least here in Germany. I wish this man well and all homeless people around the world 🙏
It isn't illegal to be homeless. But we have laws that everyone needs to follow to avoid tickets.
I hope he gets a place to stay, so he can keep his job.
And pay for the child he created…
So sad this is horrible and I hope he makes it in life! 😭❤
You never know, you may be next. I was homeless following a car wreck that left me disabled. I still can't believe the cruelty.
I am totally disgusted with the system that does this to people just trying to survive...wtf ??
That's just wrong how do they expect them to get back on their feet. If they don't even get a chance to start. Just ridiculous
The oligarchy keeps people employed in maybe an abusive system as unemployment can lead to homelessness. We now have not just the working poor but the working homeless. No one wants to live in a tent and you need a house to live in a roof not just a tent. Their needs to be State run housing to help house the homeless. Communal living as well for people forced on the street. Its a sad time in the States.
Federally paid housing because taxes don't pay for spending programs at the Federal level but states have to rely on taxes to pay for things.
Force people in prisons and mental institutions like Victorian times. Sad sad sad
Thank you for sharing you story you're really brave. I hope things improve for you. You're not worthless you are amazing and intelligent and resilient.
I knew a guy who was working in a pizza place in Grantsville, WV, who was homeless and living in his car in the parking lot.
At least he was working!
We live in a damn sick world. We’ll spend trillions on war and millions overseas to foreign countries for relief but won’t address the homelessness problem. It’s unbelievable.
People make hundreds of thousands of dollars to help the homeless from the government. Fix the homeless problem, and people lose their jobs in keeping people homeless. And making big money 💰
It's all because of Capitalism Greed
I see in documentaries politicians try to address it but when they purpose housing in a neighborhood, everyone has a “not in my backyard” attitude.
🌻There is a case from Grant's Pass that is in the Federal Court awaiting the outcome of this whole subject of homelessness and legalities etc et cetera.
The decision should be coming down the next several weeks.🏵
Do you really think it will make a difference of any kind for the good??
It's already illegal in many states to feed the homeless and as you've seen they're already giving out fines for Stupid reasons!!!!
How BAD does it have to get before people start seeing the Tyranny in the Federal Government, State Government and County Government???
The Tyranny exists because people COMPLY with illegal and tyrannical laws!!!!!
Americans really need to Read and Understand the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution!!!!!!!!
THIS is Our Country NOT the "Governments"!!!!!!
🙏🙏🙏
I watched this video in a McDonald’s parking lot in upstate NY. There is a black Chevy van that has someone living in it and across the street there is an old class B RV from probably the 80s with someone else living in it. If I drive to the Walmart there will likely be a few more out of towners sleeping in the lot. The 2 vans I mentioned have been here for 3 years moving from place to place around town. I’m only here for the camping season, I come every weekend, and these guys both older have been living in vans in this town for going on 4 years now. I also see the same group of “street homeless” as well. It’s not a good situation. My local Walmart has about 4 or 5 vans and RVs in the lot one I know for a fact is a couple with a child and one I know is a single woman. There are homeless people everywhere and more people are finding out that most are 1-3 missed paychecks away from homelessness.
😢🙏
Maybe people are starting to wake up but for years affluent people were able to tell themselves that homelessness was caused by the person's addictions. Since THEY weren't addicts, they could believe that it would never happen to them.
Now everyone is liable to become homeless so maybe they aren't using that excuse any more.
Good comment showing that the problem of homelessness runs deep.
I'm housed, but if I just lost the ability to refrigerate my day to day food, I would feel like I lost a lot.

We have lots of working homeless in Canada also. The reason being our jobs are low paying and our rentals and real estate is the most expensive in the world, yes much more expensive than the USA, double your rent prices in some cases. The major difference I notice is that in poor countries communities pitch in together and help their vulnerable as a team. In North America there is a very hateful discriminatory belief that homeless people are there because they are doing something wrong which is totally untrue. It's INSANE to give a ticket to a homeless person. I can see having to do community service but even that they are targeting the poor. I know how it is. My heart goes out to you, I pray for you all!! Too many tent stakes? Your tent is too big.? A $300 hundred dollar ticket for being too poor to acquire housing? American Tyranny is weird; to say the least.

Excuse me, but if it is illegal to be homeless, then there needs to be a safe and comfortable place to sleep and shower and be/feel secure. That's what I want my tax money to go towards, not into wars and corruption.
The US sends the military abroad and then brings them home to become homeless and then fines and/ or arrests them for being homeless. Absolute maddness.
Then stop re-electing the politicians that vote to give our money to foreigners. They have a 99% re-election rate.

Is it like the US there when it comes to "dogs" you're in trouble with the Law if you leave them out in the cold???
I find it fascinating that here in America you can go to jail for not providing a warm house to bring your pet (dog ) in from the Cold --- but we'll leave people out to freeze to death because they're homeless!!??!!??!!
Pure Insanity.😊
Disgusting. Finland and Norway wouldn't allow it
It's one thing I've noticed, it seems like if you have problems, the system just piles other problems on and makes it even worse. It's designed to make people having trouble fail, and bury them.
More like labeling you as the problem. You are correct - It is designed so you will fail once you are branded with any of the undesirable people labels. We must do something now to change this. It will only happen via grass roots effort.
America has the financial ability to solve the homeless and impoverished problems. The recent aid package passed in the house for $95 billion for Ukraine, is an example of that.
Along with the Trillions that Trump spent --- Let's NOT forget his donation of Your money!!!!!!

Our government have money for Ukraine but not for the homeless. ???
In 2023 America spent $138 plus billion dollars on the homeless problem, the problem being the homeless being a nuisance to our Great Society. The article I found this amount in was titled "Making the Homeless Miserable". ..everything from sudden police sweeps of encampents to crimalization of homelessness ( ($300 tickets and jail time) designs of everything from park and bus benches, buildings ( all called Anti Homeless Archtecture or Hostile Architecture).placing rocks under underpasses or other places so homeless can't sleep ( one city spent $700,000 for rocks) The money is there but it is going to things that don't work like shelters or Homeless agencies that don't do a damn thing other than collect private or corporate donations. Case i point, Jacksonville, Fl with 5 agencies that did not do a damn thing to help me or other homeless I talk to.
@@PatriciaNewhart Makes sense. Our elected officials have turned their backs on us normal citizens, they only care about their rich donors and now they are trying to hide the results of the problem. The only reason they fund Ukraine is because the money goes to the military-industrial complex, which heavily lobbies them and donates to their campaigns. I live in CA and our governor who is a Democrat, Gavin Newsom, hates the homeless and spends most of the homeless funding on throwing out homeless people's only belongings and they already wasted 20 billion dollars and will waste more on the homeless industrial complex, which only has increased homelessness.
This is the sort of thing that motivates people to revolt against their government.
There are truly good people that are homeless for whatever misfortune entered their life.
Then there the good people that turned bad due to being homeless because they don't have a job and thus no income, so they take desparate measures to get money/food/shelter/clothing to survive. Homelessness isn't just a big city problem anymore, it is spreading ( and has been spreading) to rural cities across the country at an alarming rate.
How can we allow foreigners to cross our southern border when we can't even care for the homeless who were born here?

So imagine this guy was given some affordable housing and then could go to work full time, pay his child support etc etc and build his life, get any mental health or other support he might need and then you have someone who is able to support his child, work full time and pay tax and pay towards any rent etc at an affordable price...its a win win...well maybe not a win for those who make a fortune out of extortionate rent and real estate, low wages and family breakdown where people are dispensable and disposable and a cheap and easy labour force is what you need, just about getting by or struggling to make ends meet.
Well for the pee sessions, a wide mouth cup and a wide mouth bottle with a tight cap like gatorade or powerade to pour it in. For the poop sessions, a camping toilet that can handle your weight and some good bags go a long way to having no leaks. This works great when you have no bathroom avail.
😭🙏God have mercy
the executive director at the union gospel mission in grants pass put up a video ridiculing the homeless locally. this man of faith is not listed as drawing a salary even though he has been there for years. By putting up the video he did he is in violation of his fiduciary responsibility in his executive position at the mission- contact the mission and get him removed from his position
There is no “Union” Gospel mission in Grants Pass. There’s one in Vancouver BC?
Sorry to say, but there are people that look down on their luck and look and talk like nice people, but their life is a trail of destruction. Alcoholism (functioning), drug use, suspended license, warrants, evictions, irs debt. I have been homeless off and on and I rarely see people that don't have housing if they want it. But I live in Michigan where supply and prices aren't as bad
What a BAD country ! Boo !
This is 3 years old ?
CRIMINALIZATION OF HOMELESSNESS........
