Homeless and Working: Eric's Daily Battle in Grants Pass, Oregon

  • Meet Eric, a hardworking individual stuck in an unforgiving cycle of homelessness in Grants Pass, Oregon. Despite holding a part-time job at a pizza place, Eric is unable to escape the relentless criminalization of homelessness that plagues the city. Grants Pass has made it illegal to be homeless, forcing individuals like Eric to move their encampments every three days. This harsh reality, combined with the challenges of paying child support and trying to save money, makes it nearly impossible for Eric to get back on his feet.
Eric's story highlights the absurdity of criminalizing homelessness. As the homelessness crisis grows, so do the encampments, exacerbated by policies that push people from one park to another. This constant upheaval not only destabilizes lives but also strains community resources.
Grants Pass, Oregon, has come under intense scrutiny for its harsh criminalization of homelessness, particularly highlighted in the Johnson v. Grants Pass Supreme Court case. This landmark case challenges the city's policies that effectively make it illegal to be homeless, such as ordinances prohibiting camping in public spaces and the issuance of fines and citations to those without stable housing. The case has ascended to the Supreme Court, symbolizing a critical moment in the national debate over how cities handle homelessness. Advocates argue that criminalizing homelessness only exacerbates the problem, leading to larger encampments and further marginalizing an already vulnerable population. The case underscores the urgent need for compassionate, evidence-based solutions like affordable housing and support services instead of punitive measures.
The only way to truly eliminate homeless camps is to support evidence-based solutions like housing and comprehensive support services. Eric's resilience and determination amidst these challenges are a testament to the need for compassion and real solutions, rather than punitive measures.
Watch Eric's emotional journey and understand why the criminalization of homelessness is not just ineffective but inhumane. Join us in advocating for policies that provide real support and housing, not just tickets and harassment.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

The oligarchy keeps people employed in maybe an abusive system as unemployment can lead to homelessness. We now have not just the working poor but the working homeless. No one wants to live in a tent and you need a house to live in a roof not just a tent. Their needs to be State run housing to help house the homeless. Communal living as well for people forced on the street. Its a sad time in the States.

I watched this video in a McDonald’s parking lot in upstate NY. There is a black Chevy van that has someone living in it and across the street there is an old class B RV from probably the 80s with someone else living in it. If I drive to the Walmart there will likely be a few more out of towners sleeping in the lot. The 2 vans I mentioned have been here for 3 years moving from place to place around town. I’m only here for the camping season, I come every weekend, and these guys both older have been living in vans in this town for going on 4 years now. I also see the same group of “street homeless” as well. It’s not a good situation. My local Walmart has about 4 or 5 vans and RVs in the lot one I know for a fact is a couple with a child and one I know is a single woman. There are homeless people everywhere and more people are finding out that most are 1-3 missed paychecks away from homelessness.

We have lots of working homeless in Canada also. The reason being our jobs are low paying and our rentals and real estate is the most expensive in the world, yes much more expensive than the USA, double your rent prices in some cases. The major difference I notice is that in poor countries communities pitch in together and help their vulnerable as a team. In 2023 America spent $138 plus billion dollars on the homeless problem, the problem being the homeless being a nuisance to our Great Society. The article I found this amount in was titled "Making the Homeless Miserable". ..everything from sudden police sweeps of encampents to crimalization of homelessness ( ($300 tickets and jail time) designs of everything from park and bus benches, buildings ( all called Anti Homeless Archtecture or Hostile Architecture).placing rocks under underpasses or other places so homeless can't sleep ( one city spent $700,000 for rocks) The money is there but it is going to things that don't work like shelters or Homeless agencies that don't do a damn thing other than collect private or corporate donations. Case i point, Jacksonville, Fl with 5 agencies that did not do a damn thing to help me or other homeless I talk to.

Our elected officials have turned their backs on us normal citizens, they only care about their rich donors and now they are trying to hide the results of the problem. The only reason they fund Ukraine is because the money goes to the military-industrial complex, which heavily lobbies them and donates to their campaigns. I live in CA and our governor who is a Democrat, Gavin Newsom, hates the homeless and spends most of the homeless funding on throwing out homeless people's only belongings and they already wasted 20 billion dollars and will waste more on the homeless industrial complex, which only has increased homelessness.

There are truly good people that are homeless for whatever misfortune entered their life.
Then there the good people that turned bad due to being homeless because they don't have a job and thus no income, so they take desparate measures to get money/food/shelter/clothing to survive. Homelessness isn't just a big city problem anymore, it is spreading ( and has been spreading) to rural cities across the country at an alarming rate.
How can we allow foreigners to cross our southern border when we can't even care for the homeless who were born here?
As a young child at the sunday morning church service, i remember the pastor saying "god will provide". "Jesus loves you" "follow me and you will be saved"

There is no “Union” Gospel mission in Grants Pass. There’s one in Vancouver BC?

Sorry to say, but there are people that look down on their luck and look and talk like nice people, but their life is a trail of destruction. Alcoholism (functioning), drug use, suspended license, warrants, evictions, irs debt. I have been homeless off and on and I rarely see people that don't have housing if they want it. But I live in Michigan where supply and prices aren't as bad
