Storm drains flow directly to local lakes, rivers, and wetlands, acting as a conduit for trash and organic pollutants. Adopt-a-Drain asks residents to adopt a storm drain in their neighborhood and keep it clear of leaves, trash, and other debris to reduce water pollution.
Madison, a fifth grader in the Rochester Public Schools, discovered the Adopt-a-Drain program through the City of Rochester Public Works Environmental Services team while her student council participated in the Trust for Public Land's Minnesota Community Schoolyards Project. Inspired to make a difference in her community, she eagerly signed up to adopt three drains of her own!
