Good video. I did my city and guilds approx 10 years ago. I’m actually a kitchen fitter but was always waiting for plasterers!! So I learnt to plaster. My course used to make us skim three coats of finish instead of scraping of stipple etc. I’m a expat in Spain now, that’s a completely different ballgame! We use perlinor here, the closest I’ve come to finding multi finish. Just sets a bit quicker.
Hi Blaine great info there and wondering could tiles be plastered over or dot and dab with plasterboard and skim? Any tips would be appreciated as taking tiles off is going to cause massive work as walls are constructed of old 50 mil clinker blocks with weak plaster over.
Have you ever tried flattening/closing in with your flexi. I tried the other day as labourer was trying to use my finish trowel. Will be doing it from now on. So much better I felt!
I watched a video on youtube years ago from a really good hand soon after the flexi came out, he put on and finished with a flexi. ever since that day I have done the same, I know they are meant to be a finishing trowel only, but it has never given me a problem, and its cured my tennis elbow, it just makes life so much easier, if I have doctored a bit of bonding up and needed to skim it straight over and obviously it sometimes blebs, then I need to give a very hard trowel with steel, other than that it leaves a first class job

Great work thank you for uploading it.i have done recently an Artex ceiling myself , but haven’t used one of them speedskim boards.looking at them ,there are two options, plastic or steel blade, which one would you recommend?i thought my plastering looks very good and couldn’t see any unlevel bits, walls or ceilings, but by looking in different lighting, without the lights on ,just the daylight and even that depending on mornings or evenings , I could see some unlevel parts , which I think could be avoided if I would of used one of them speedskimm fancy tools...many thanks Rob
Yeah the Speedskim is a great bit if kit and it definately flattens your walls to a higher standard. I've seen an massive difference since using it so I definately recommend it! I'd go for the plastic blade matey - is cracking!
Being new to plastering, i found this very helpful. Q1, do we have to wait for.2nd coat of pva to dry or start plastering while tacky? Q2, I was lead to believe that bonding coat and then a 2nd coat of skimming was the way forward for such a job. Obviously not the case. What type of job would you use a bond and skim coat?
Glad to hear you found it useful matey! Yeah you usually wait for the PVA to go tacky but to be honest I've never found it to be a massive issue if you don't. You can come back to it when it's completing dry otherwise. I never really use Bonding on Artex - it's all down to preference. If it's an extreme case of Artex which can't be scraped then Bonding is the answer. Everyone has a different method and like I said, it's all down to preference pal 👍
Ive had a nightmare this week. Did a very large artex ceiling, blue grit it and followed this process but 4 days later a section fell off. First time using blue grit and only used it coz it was satin paint. On reflection looks like I didn't put enough blue grit on. Proper gutted 😔
I’m sure I’ve seen u in the past to do a 30% 70% mix with hardwall and multi finish to overcome real bad undulating areas du reckon u could use this mix on an artexed ceiling if the texture is quite prominent obviously only on the first coat
I got 5 ceiling to do starting Monday a bathroom separate toilet and 3 bedroom going to use this video as my tutorial as it's my first artex cover job. I have given my self 5 days to carry out this. Do you think it's enough time for a first time effort.
I’ve stipple in my small bathroom ceiling and I’m no good at plastering. I’m on my own! Is it possible to trowel a layer of plasterboard adhesive to the ceiling.. then offer up a small plasterboard to stick to the adhesive and put in a few screws to hold the board in place while the adhesive cures? Then remove the screws…fill in joints and so on?
Another great video! Big thank You! I remember my first artex ceiling and it was nightmare... especially with times. I have 2 questions: 1. It's not first time when I noticed you plaster ceiling and wall with the same corner at the same time. How do you deal with it? And 2nd: Have you ever plaster ceiling above carpet? Can you make a video how do you protect everything in a room (carpets, skirting board, sockets - btw. I use food foil to protect sockets and switches, maybe it sounds funny but it does the Job). Is it any chance to protect walls before painting?
Hi mate! It's great hearing from you again! Yeah they can be very troublesome but it's all down to timings! I plaster a lot of wet corners which can be a bit of an issue but with time you can really get into it. There's s video in the advanced section of The Plasterers Blueprint actually - I discuss it in detail there matey! Yeah that's a great idea. I usually use start sheets and making tape around the shirts but you could also use carpet protectors as our friend above mentioned! Hope this all helps pal and it's great to hear from you again 👍

Hi. Thanks a lot for your video. We've moved into this house that was built in 1970 and all hallway downstairs, stairs ans upstairs hallway all walls and ceilings are artex. I am planning on tackling it all by myself and my experience with plastering is: nil. How do I sign up for your plastering tutorial, please?
Could I ask why you don't use the speedskim to finish the second coat? Could you if you wanted? I guess you'd have to get any bits you miss with a trowel.
Great video! I’ve got this same project to do for my own ceiling although the artex was just light stipple which I’ve scraped back flat. Can I ask what ratio mix of multi-finish to water do you use on this slighter drier mix? Thank you!
Hi mate, great hearing from you. It's not as bad when the Artex isn't as defined so I'd mix 12.5 litres of water to one bag of Multi Finish. This should give you the right consistency pal! Hope this helps and good luck with your ceilings 👍
Artex was still being used on buildings right up untill early 2ks not 1985. The stocks ov asbestos were still being used .just be careful. That chance you took could or might be costly. Good luck. Good vid
hi pal Ive used artex over the yrs but will never overskim it as its not a normal plaster which sets by hydraulic action (chemical reaction)its an air drying compound like paint so the water in the new coat wets it back up and that's why it peels off
I personally prefer using PVA with Artex. If I use at least 2 coats and hit the ceiling when the PVA is tacky then I never get any issues. I find that Blurgrit had to much of a texture. This added to the texture of the Artex just creates a bigger problem for me but I know a lot of people who use it. It's also very messy to use 😂
1 big problem ,skimming might stick to artex but is the artex sound you wont know till you skimmed to it and it may come away from the board , l all ways overboard first no danger of the ceiling failing.
Good vid. I worked in the USA for awhile and they regularaly go over texture. I have seen many times after pva-ing the artex coming off dropping off or even worse theyve artexed onto oil based paint and the plaster peel off. You know what i saw them use which was quick? Message me back and ill tell you. Lol
You can only really get away with this if the artex is quite flat to the wall, and the plasterboard is really well nailed or screwed on, as you're adding more weight it can cause the plasterboard to sagg and potentially come down, as i've found out 🙈
I'm nay plasterer, I'm just a builder, but I always put sand in the Unibond. I recon, that way I get less plaster in the face. Just get sand and Unibond in the face instead.
what plaster did you use to cover the artex. I am wanting to plaster over my ceiling which was built in the 70's. What method would you recomend to cover the ceiling?
Thank you, I really appreciate that. The product is British Gypsum Multi Finish but I'm really not sure if you can get it in the States (I doubt it 😒) However, when I worked in NZ my friend used to ship a pallet over because he loved using the English products. The only thing you have to watch out for is the sell by date - it does have a shelf life. Hope this helps and thanks again 👍
Tried plastering walls a couple of times and always find it starts to dry and when I start to smooth it out i get tiger stripes. Found your vids really good. I now have a whole house to re-plaster including popcorn ceilings. Is plastering aspestos popcorn basically the same process as the artex?
My house was built in 1967 so would I be right in thinking my popcorn ceiling is most likely going to be a asbestos mixture, i was told only properties from pre 1960 used a asbestos mixture, I suppose I will have someone test a small piece before we skim over this but just wondering if anyone could confirm this? Thanks
Hey Blaine great vid I’m going to have a crack at plastering over my artex this weekend. What ratio do you mix the plaster for when doing artex? I know you say to make it thicker but are we talking a litre less of water or more? Or less?
Hi mate - I would still keep the mix the same because it's just easier to work with. You just want to apply it thicker that's all - 12.5L of water to one bag of plaster pal! Thats the dream mix 👍
never scrape an artex ceiling, see asbestos in artex for the reason. to make your first coat a lot easier i always add a few handfuls of bonding plaster to the mix as it helps to fluff up the mix allowing a thicker application.
Is a refina superflex suitable for the whole job and what size trowel would you recommend. what size of speedskim would you recommend for a beginner, 600 or 1200? Can the sponge float method be used on artex ceilings and is this a better method for someone who has never plastered? Thanks for the videos, keep it up.
You’ve done this in the wrong order. You scrape first, then pva for starters. 2 coats of multi finish is all that’s needed for those patterns, don’t forget all bits of smal plasterboard make good bits should be taped or scrimmed too. I was an artexer back in the day, we were treated way above any other trade back then, almost celebrity status! It was very fashionable and a highly skilled trade if done properly. Going out of fashion does not mean it was only done by chancers, many a plasterer tried and failed to artex to the standard of a proper artexer.
I like the overlapping swirl patterns and a simple roller stipple on ceilings but not walls; just enough to hide whatever imperfections are under them. Both are great if you need to finish a room in a hurry or if you want to make a low ceiling a little less oppressive. I only skimmed my ceilings because they had been repaired and matching the texture would have been a hassle. They do a bunch of other textures here in the USA, depending on the area, including skiptrowel, knockdown, and some weird stomping thing with a hairy brush or a sponge and I find most of them hideous, especially on walls. I guess it's just a matter of moderation.

See when you put the glue on do you scrape after first coat and then apply the 2nd coat is that right?
Your videos are awesome. Can you use exactly the same techniques with white plaster
Thank you so much!! I can't see why not matey!!
Hi Blaine great info there and wondering could tiles be plastered over or dot and dab with plasterboard and skim? Any tips would be appreciated as taking tiles off is going to cause massive work as walls are constructed of old 50 mil clinker blocks with weak plaster over.
thanks for the informative comments great video i will continue to watch.
Cheers pal 👍
Great video ...I plaster before looking your video..and I think i done mistake..i plaster without pva first...you think the plaster will fall down?
@@greenup9913 totally mate. I use a refina superflex, couldn’t find finishing trowel on job last week and done the full whack with it and was much lighter on the arm etc. left exact same finish too !
@@williammacphee335 anything that saves your arm/body is worth a try, I have never looked back since watching that video, I was told when I first started plastering, by an old joiner to get out of this job as it kills horses, and he was right, we really do need to look after ourselves if we intend doing this job long term, especially if your a site worker
@@greenup9913 I’m domestic work mate don’t touch sites. Good money but killing yourself daily. Rather do a room in 2 days for 700 (approx) than rattling it out in 2 gauges in 4 hours for 400 and in agony for days after
best way to treat asbestos is if in doubt...always assume it is asbestos. you can take a small sample in a bag and have it tested for like £20. why risk it? not just you exposed, its that whole house, their family, your clothes and van and then your family at home
Fair point pal!
Yes. That's I told my friend when we started drilling into artex. Put a mask on. He did not listen, hell knows what will be his consequences.
Everyone has a different method and like I said, it's all down to preference pal 👍
scraping high spots, have you tested for asbestos, big up blanie for possibly giving some one asbestosis
It was tested beforehand
Ive had a nightmare this week. Did a very large artex ceiling, blue grit it and followed this process but 4 days later a section fell off. First time using blue grit and only used it coz it was satin paint. On reflection looks like I didn't put enough blue grit on. Proper gutted 😔
Good job Blaine as always
I’m sure I’ve seen u in the past to do a 30% 70% mix with hardwall and multi finish to overcome real bad undulating areas du reckon u could use this mix on an artexed ceiling if the texture is quite prominent obviously only on the first coat
Hi
Great video. Many thanks.
Can I uxse ready mixed plaster? Do I need to do a bonding coat first? Is bonding coat just painting ceiling with pva?
I'd about ready mixed plaster mate because they're rubbish to tell you the truth ha!! Sick to BG Multi Finish my friend 👍
What size aria is good to work at a time on my own. Like drying time from start to finishing?
I got 5 ceiling to do starting Monday a bathroom separate toilet and 3 bedroom going to use this video as my tutorial as it's my first artex cover job. I have given my self 5 days to carry out this. Do you think it's enough time for a first time effort.
Hi, I'm looking to do a bit DIY and plastering the bathroom that has some artex ceilings. Which dry plaster to you recommend? Thanks
Hi Blaine, what PVA would you recommend for Artex ceilings?
Hi Blaine would you recommend febond blue grit or pea for a 3.5 x 4m stippled ceiling before bonding
Thanks in advance
It’s a good product but there’s nothing wrong with PVA
I’ve stipple in my small bathroom ceiling and I’m no good at plastering.
I’m on my own! Is it possible to trowel a layer of plasterboard adhesive to the ceiling.. then offer up a small plasterboard to stick to the adhesive and put in a few screws to hold the board in place while the adhesive cures? Then remove the screws…fill in joints and so on?
Great details, welcome course is good 👍
Would you recommend a bonding coat followed by x2 multi finish.
Regards
Do you wait for second coat of PVA to dry before applying plaster?? ie can you apply pva then come back to it another day?? Thanks
Very informative video im no plasterer just do small repair jobs when I have to I'm a gas engineer.
Fair play to you! Thanks for watching 👍
You can buy carpet protection to protect carpets or dustsheets.
Nice video. Explained everything really well, good job. Completely summed up how it feels to get plaster in your eye ABSOLUTELY ANGIN'!!! 😂 I've learnt the hard way and always wear glasses now.
Haha it is the worse thing in the world. I really need to start wearing goggles ha! Thanks for the comment my friend. Cheers 👍
you have inspired me! thanks so much for taking the time!
Thank you for watching and good luck my friend!
Do you run any 1-2 day course? Be good to try and learn the basics in person.
Cheers
Not yet but it is an idea for the future! I'll keep you posted if anything changes pal 👍
I'd also be up for these classes
This vid came out at the perfect time for me! Thanks!
Not a problem! Hope it helps 👍
If u want things to come out right hire a pro cause gana have to rip down the work u did and will be cost u more money
@@vincentplastering3074 I guess you were born a pro then? First ceiling flat as glass. Nice encouragement there.
If we're being critical of people doing things they're not qualified to do, perhaps you could take some English lessons before you post on here again. The irony in your message is hilarious, if your skimming is as bad as your attitude and your English I imagine you're a pretty skint plasterer.
Just a thought actually, why on earth is a PRO like you watching TH-cam plastering tutorials? I smell a rat. Or a hypocrite.
Great job blaine, really good info and detail on how to deal with this job
Thank you Adam I really appreciate that mate 👍
Could I ask why you don't use the speedskim to finish the second coat? Could you if you wanted? I guess you'd have to get any bits you miss with a trowel.
Exactly that mate. It's not the best for finishing so the trowel cleans any gaps or holes! Hope this helps pal 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners Thanks! Brilliant videos by the way!
Been scraping artex ceilings for 11 years. For some reason I never took the dangers seriously. What a horrible realisation.
Why didn’t you scrim tape those spot light patches
I taped it after I had scraped the artex. I would have scraped it off otherwise 👍
Plastering For Beginners good stuff 👍
Can you use the blue grit onto artex ceilings ??
I personally wouldn't because it's a bit too gritty. That's my opinion - hope it helps my friend 👍
Plastering For Beginners hi mate to late already done today worked out a dream to be fair👌🏻 would really recommend febond.
This is a very instructural video .
Plastering For Beginners thank you, really appreciate the quick reply!
No worries mate 👍
Very good job that’s the way I would of done but there’s another way that’s
Using multi finish with bonding mixed
Thanks matey 👍
What is the ratio of multi finish with bonding that you use? Thanks!
@@skydiver0084 saw some others on here say 50:50
hi mate Why don't you use thistle Bond-it before skimming ?
Always on first mix put some boanding in with multi thinking itbup
Cheers pal, thanks for the recommendation 👍
Very helpful video:)
One question, why do you pva before scraping high points and not after?
To reduce the amount of dust 👍
Artex was still being used on buildings right up untill early 2ks not 1985. The stocks ov asbestos were still being used .just be careful. That chance you took could or might be costly. Good luck. Good vid
hi pal Ive used artex over the yrs but will never overskim it as its not a normal plaster which sets by hydraulic action (chemical reaction)its an air drying compound like paint so the water in the new coat wets it back up and that's why it peels off
Can you use the speed skim on the second coat?
Whats your opinion of blue grit?
I personally prefer using PVA with Artex. If I use at least 2 coats and hit the ceiling when the PVA is tacky then I never get any issues. I find that Blurgrit had to much of a texture. This added to the texture of the Artex just creates a bigger problem for me but I know a lot of people who use it. It's also very messy to use 😂
Would this be the same process if we're trying to plaster over popcorn ceilings?
Wouldn't it be better to scrape it before you apply the pva?
my artex has a crackline in it and I was told if skimmed the crack would reappear and must be boarded. Two men done in a day.Would this be right?
1 big problem ,skimming might stick to artex but is the artex sound you wont know till you skimmed to it and it may come away from the board , l all ways overboard first no danger of the ceiling failing.
is this the same process for an ensuite with mould and flaky artex?
Good vid. I worked in the USA for awhile and they regularaly go over texture. I have seen many times after pva-ing the artex coming off dropping off or even worse theyve artexed onto oil based paint and the plaster peel off. You know what i saw them use which was quick? Message me back and ill tell you. Lol
Do the 2 coats of plaster have to be done straight away? Could you put a thick layer of bonding then skim it the next day??
What mud is it? Multi finish from Wickes?
You can only really get away with this if the artex is quite flat to the wall, and the plasterboard is really well nailed or screwed on, as you're adding more weight it can cause the plasterboard to sagg and potentially come down, as i've found out 🙈
I'm nay plasterer, I'm just a builder, but I always put sand in the Unibond. I recon, that way I get less plaster in the face. Just get sand and Unibond in the face instead.
what plaster did you use to cover the artex. I am wanting to plaster over my ceiling which was built in the 70's. What method would you recomend to cover the ceiling?
You can use Bonding first to cover the texture or 2 thick coats of British Gypsum Multi Finish pal 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners over thick pattern artex always use bonding plaster. I've been doing it for 30 years.
Great video as usual! Also, which plaster are you using and can this be purchased in the US? Thank you!
Thanks
Great vid! Was that one coat of bonding and one of multi finish? Cheers
What plaster did you use on this? Thank you
never scrape an artex ceiling, see asbestos in artex for the reason. to make your first coat a lot easier i always add a few handfuls of bonding plaster to the mix as it helps to fluff up the mix allowing a thicker application.
lack of understanding, like many utubers
Good upload m8 I do my artex ceilings slightly different 👍 but sometimes do it this way👍
Thanks mate I appreciate that! Hope your channels going well my friend 👍
Presumably you’d recommend blue grit over PVA for glossy surface?
You can - just avoid Distemper 👍
Is a refina superflex suitable for the whole job and what size trowel would you recommend. what size of speedskim would you recommend for a beginner, 600 or 1200? Can the sponge float method be used on artex ceilings and is this a better method for someone who has never plastered?
Thanks for the videos, keep it up.
Hi is blue grit better than pva for covering artex?
You’ve done this in the wrong order. You scrape first, then pva for starters. 2 coats of multi finish is all that’s needed for those patterns, don’t forget all bits of smal plasterboard make good bits should be taped or scrimmed too. I was an artexer back in the day, we were treated way above any other trade back then, almost celebrity status! It was very fashionable and a highly skilled trade if done properly. Going out of fashion does not mean it was only done by chancers, many a plasterer tried and failed to artex to the standard of a proper artexer.
Good on you .... I think after looks naff!
I guess it's just a matter of moderation.
how much pressure should you apply when trowelling on?
Hi mate! There should be little pressure - if the mix is right then you shouldn’t need to force it on the wall 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners thanks fella. Is that bonding coat first, then multi finish?
