    Is the last step - collimating the primary - required for the newer RC scopes wherein the primary is fixed? I would imagine not

      Actually, in these types of scopes the primary is "fixed" in the sense that the mirror does not move backwards and forwards for focusing. The mirror in this type is still capable of tip/tilt movement and does require collimation.
