In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to Scaretale by Nightwish. This song comes from Imaginaerum, their 7th album, and features Anette Olzon on vocals. This song is perfect for this time of year...it's spooky and macabre...as well as being lighthearted and a sheer delight. Enjoy!

Anette is really underrated because her vocal range is less expansive, her singing is a bit less technical than tarja and floor but one thing I don't see praised is the performance itself (as in, acting the song) and I think she is really good at that especially in imaginareum where she gets to be very expressive.

Anette is such an good singer. All the hate she have gotten is just so stupid, she and Floor are my personal favorites of the singers in Nightwish, I still like Tarja but Anette and Floor is just something special to me. Anette also got a great solo album called Strong and also in a project with someone called The Dark element that also putted put really awesome music.

But mostly that is because of the insane people who worship floor for singing songs not made for her.

Yes! Do check the whole Imaginarium. There's not a bad song on it.
My favourites are "The crow, the owl and the dove" and "Turn loose the mermaids "
Both are so beautifully sad. Basically different sides of the same coin, both from the point of view and the subject. I recommend you to check the fan animated video of the crow, dove&owl. It cuts deep

"Demented Disney" aka tales from the Brothers Grimm in their original form. A lot of fairy tales are much more horrific than you might think if you just know the Disney version of the tale. This song is basically "What if Disney faithfully recreated stories from the Brothers Grimm?"

While Nightwish has certainly had their moments post-Imaginaerum, this album, to me, is Tuomas's magnum opus. I've been with them since the early 2000s and this was one of the very few albums that I have had to immediately spin all the way through again.

Been binge watching all your Nightwish reactions! I was a big (strictly) metalhead till I was introduced to them in 2020.. now I compose orchestral music for video games and trailers lmao They literally hijacked my music tastes and brought me into a world I never thought I'd love. The second half of their Human Nature album was my most played on Spotify the year it came out.

“Amaranth” is an example of an Annette song that only sounds good when Annette does it. For more, non-Nightwish Annette, check out Allen/Olzon and The Dark Element. Fantastic stuff. She only moonlights as a singer on recordings…her everyday job is a nurse, so kudos to her.

I personally highly suggest to also check the movie Imaginaerum (many of the scenes are from there).
It helps a lot to fully grasp the whole concept of the album.
As for the vocal part. Annette has that bright colorful voice which fits perfectly for a storyteller of a fairy tale (even a creepy one).
While some can argue about if the songs sound better on one singer or the other, I can't imagine the original Imaginaerum with someone else's voice.

I recommend you dig into more material from the Anette era. It´´s superb. In this song, she doesn´t quite sing with her "normal" voice. She deliberately made her voice more "witch-sounding", more of a character - this shocked the guys during the recording, especially when singing the "squealing pigs" part, where she spat into the microphone for extra effect. She totally went into the character and delivered what the song needed.
Tarja and Floor are considered better singers but Anette has so far probably sang the band´s best material. When I listen to the material Anette was on, I think it´s perfect for her voice. The songs are very strong.

Interesting note the riff that's happening during the verses (4:45 etc.) is possibly a direct nod to the Phantom of the Opera ("Sing for me" section riff) which Tuomas of course is intimately familiar with. There are many reasons for doing this intentionally (eluding to that vibe, giving it new life, putting his stamp on it, plain honouring the riff etc.) or it could have weaseled its way from his memory into his imagination and made it's reentry that way but I'd be amazed if this wasn't at least on his radar somehow. Either way it's kinda cool.

It's not my favorite album (DPP is) but it's high up there. So many great songs. And as much as I love Floor and prefer her on almost everything... This one is Anette's. Tuomas has a knack for writing to the strengths to the vocalist by the second album with them. With Anette, Dark Passion Play is more general in terms of vocal expectations, but Imaginaerum is tailored for Anette perfectly. Same thing happened with Floor; her first album, Endless Forms, is more general in vocal expectations. It's evident in the next album, Human :||: Nature, Tuomas worked more closely with Floor to write vocals that pretty much only she can do.

As far as I remember DPP was already finished in writing when they cast Anette so she just had to somehow fit in with what was already there. I think "Bless the Child" is Tuomas's most symphonic work...but this is a close second. I'd love to hear it for just full orchestra. The strings are already there. The trick is to properly orchestra Antette's lines, for the right instrument. But throw in some big brass, and you've got a piece any orchestra would love to play. If had a copy of the score (and permission)....

Yes, this is NW at their most musical-theatric! An album listen of _Imaginaerum_ is the best way to experience it IMO, because of the through-story. One clever thing is that the album and film have similar but different storylines, so I extract different meanings depending on context. The daymare bit in particular here varies - in the movie it seems like a child is having a daymare, but the reality is very different.

I just have to say as a huge Nightwish fan i really feel for anette she had to follow in the footsteps of Tarja who was so beloved by NW fans and i think both albums anette was on were 2 of the best albums NW has come out with not saying best but definitely top 5 and then happened to get replaced by Floor who has been amazing in her time with the band. Anette was not the operatic singing style like tarja and Floor can do anette was more poppy sounding but really loved both Dark passion play and Imaginaerum albums. And on a side note watching this video made me miss Jukka on drums nothing against kai but jukka just had a presence i enjoyed.

Hi Doug, actually I have a request.
Could you do a reaction video on Nightwish: Shoemaker?
I'm pretty curious about your reaction.
    Thanks in advance.
    Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱

sooo underestimated song, maybe too 'artistic' to regular listener and they don't want to do the background search like you do. I love your reactions cause you have soooo much music knowledge
