I thought that good quality Lithium batteries contained a Battery Management System (BMS) that will control the exact voltage passed to the battery cells irespective of the voltage coming from the Reg/Rec.?? I have been told the same information as you from a reseller of charging equipment, however, On the SkyRich (Lithim Battery Manufacturer) web site it states that their batteries can be charged at any voltage below 15v but above 14v. Standard lead acid batteries are regulated to aprox 14.4v to14.6v, so that should sit exactly within the SkyRich specification without changing the reg/rec. I guess the manufactures should know how their batteries work?
That is actually a very good point. My battery from Ultrabatt also has a BMS. I'll shoot them a message and ask about that. Would be nice to know for future builds. Thanks for pointing it out. I appreciate it 🙏
Some super lightweight Small Case batteries such as the AntiGravity XPS SC-1 & AG-401 do not have an onboard BMS to save space. Older bikes tend to need the rectifier upgrade to avoid damage to the battery.
@andyberhaahn6070 sounds like you're well prepared! Let me know how it's going! By the way, where are you going to place the MUnit? I'm thinking about underneath the gas tank
Hello from Japan. I always look forward to your videos. I too am always staring at the voltmeter when I am riding my R100. I would like to update my regulator someday.
I am a bit confused as to why a special rectifier regulator is needed. Most units for lead acid limit at 14.2V surely this is in the range for the lithium technology. None of the rectifier regulator specified for lithium have published detailed specification and they cost ten times as much. I would like to know the difference.
Ah that's a very good question. Since I'm replacing the whole system I've never really thought about it. I'll do research and let you know if I find an answer! Cheers, Joshua
Hi Mickael, I've spoken to Andrew. He plans to run a Reg/Rec from Rick's Motorsports Electrics for his Lithium-Ion battery but keep the original charging system. From what Andrew told me, you don't need the diode board anymore when using a modern reg/rec. I hope that helps. Cheers, Joshua
@@MotoWrenchers Hi Josh, Thanks for your reply. I've removed the original diode board and bought a modern REG/REC from Electrosport, fitable with a GEL battery only. It does help a lot thank you !
Yeah, went down the same black hole myself when changing over to lithium. Got a ricks motorsport one, works great. Need to upgrade my charging system now. Why did you go with a vape system and not something like the brushless set from euro motor electrics?
@michaelboyorix Hi Michael, what bike do you have? Honestly, I've just seen that Revival Cycles use them on a lot of their builds and just trusted their judgement. I liked that it was a complete system that works plug and play. Which system are you considering to get?
Hi really enjoying your informative videos. I have a question if that is ok. Would this regulator- rectifier work with a Traditional r80 charging system, obviously For a ultrabatt. Thank you for your time. Kind regards Karl
Hi Karl, from what I've understood, I think that would work. I'd double-check with VAPE however or shoot Rick's Motorsport Electrics a message. Also, there is a comment noting that the modern lithium-ion batteries often have a battery management system, which allows them to be charged with any Reg/Rec. I didn't know that but from what I remember, I think the ultrabatts have that as well. I will send Ultrabatt an email and ask about that would be interesting to know :)
Hi Joshua. The 2 vape systems look the same, obviously with a different reg/rec. I noticed there only produce 190w from the alternator, that’s less than standard? What voltage at revs are you getting? I appreciate your help and understanding. Kind regards Karl
Hi Karl, yeah that's right. The system only produces 190w but the power for the ignition is separate which makes it work. I'm just in the process of installing the system, so I can't tell you how it performs, yet. But Revival Cycles and other builders only have good things to say about the VAPE systems, so I am sure they work well.
Very clear explanation of a very important subject! 👌
Thank you! I hope it helps to make the topic a bit easier to understand :)

I've gone for the lithium Rick's reg/rec but planning on keeping standard charging system with enduralast electronic Ign system
Hi Andy, that's also a solid setup. Are you re-wiring as well or just partly?
@@MotoWrenchers full rewire with motogadget m unit blue yes 😬
Nice!! Gonna be a clean setup! Do you have any experience with wiring?
@@MotoWrenchers done a few bits over the years and understand the theory so hopefully be ok. Plenty of helpful diagrams online too

Is it a marketing trap? the normal regulator unless it is broken or has poor quality control it will not output more than 14.7 volts or something 14.4
