All Cello gear is best in class. Last time I heard a Cello system was 1995 in L.A. Nagra front end, Cello electronics and Cello speakers. Wow that was good.
Mark Levinson would bristle when people referred to the Audio Palette as an equalizer. He called it a “tone control system”. They became available 1985, and most were actually made in the 1980s.
Beautiful piece. I love EQs and would not be without one. I have hearing issues. Currently using the PEQ in my Eversolo 8 but if I didn’t have that I would get the Mcintosh EQ.
I remember seeing these in various 90s audio magazines. This was a very cool video of something from a cool era of audio. Edit: thanks for the deep dive on your system and the Cello system. I learned a lot and you demystified many things. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
for the past 40 years, I never has a system without an EQ, a DIGITAL DSP will do everything and more things beyond what this analog EQ does, of course I am 100% in the digital domain including 4 way digital crossover since 2013, and fully class-D since 2020
Hey thanks. Im cooking up a video with the various system through the house, just need to find some time to edit it. If you guys think it would be interesting pls let me know.
thanks for the really informative video about this very interesting piece. i'm surprised that the controls weren't parametric like on my SAE eq. i assume that a parametric design although more flexible would have added too much noise.
I used to have the Performance II monoblocks, could never afford the Suite though. It was TOTL, extremely pricey. The tower speakers had very low impedance, something like 2 ohms. The connector is Fischer 104 series AFAIK. Very hard to get and very expensive. I think idea-wise the closest to Cello would've been FM Acoustics.
Those controls are odd (non-standard) values for band frequencies. Can they be changed (like in a parametric EQ) ? What is the "Q" (or bandwidth) of each band ? Is it a "constant Q" equalizer ? (most are NOT) Looks like they used discrete transistors instead of Op-amps. That IS a rare design treat for "modern" EQ's. Why did they not use standard XLR's ?
The Crown EQ-2 is basically the only unit capable of what you just described (short of a full tilt studio console). Extreme flexibility and built well.
Great questions. Hopefully someone has more info on this than I do and can chime in. The frequencies cannot be changed. I suspect the connectors were selected for both higher quality and exclusivity, so that you had to get the matching cables.

Must have been good if you remember from that long ago.

Eqs are so much fun

Nice video, thank you! ❤ Cello Audio Palette MIV !
Why consider anD equalizer? 😂😂 Love the cello gear. Heard it with mark levinson present. Impressive guy, great gear.
Really enjoyed this video.
I do miss seeing them on a regular basis .
More to come!

what DSP do you use? I am going to buy a dbx PA2 to be used as active crossover for 3 ways JBL pro speakers
Love seeing you current home system.

I think you're right. This thing is one of the quietest EQs I have tested.

That Nagra CD Players is awesome!

It has the looks of a Copland amplifier!
This pre dates Copland, so the other way around
Nice video, I would sell my house to get your crazy speakers, please tell me a little more about them. Thanks you !
Price?
Sold right away. They tend to go from $20-30K.
@SkyFiAud😮io
How is this different from the one that has sloping faceplate ?
They don’t make them better than this.
Interesting...it sounded much better when set on zero. Well not worth it I'd say.
Maybe the recording that your heard didn't need equalisation, remember that is the purpose for this type of component.
I have a schiit loki max...modern equivalent bit waaay cheaper
Why can’t you just appreciate the piece being presented? Everything isn’t about being “cheap”. 😣
Tone controls will not improve anything.
Yeah but they are so much fun.
Wrong.
Hi. Im here early i see
