Land Rover Discovery 3 / LR3 / LR4 Rear Propshaft Replacement - Center Bearing Failure

  • Should you replace the center bearing or the whole shaft? Quick answer, replace the whole shaft if its over 2 years or if inspection of the rear UV joint reveals that is has notching.
    It is also much easier to replace the whole rear propshaft ond the disco 3 than to replace the center bearing. It also saves you a lot of time.
    To make things clear, it is most often the rubber holding the center bearing, and in turn the rear propshaft, that is the major failing point on the Land Rover Discovery 3 rear driveline. And not the bearing it self, as you will see in the video.
    This issue with the failing rubber on the center bearing also concerns the land rover models Discovery 4, LR3, LR4 and RRS.
    Note: The RRS has a different propshaft than the Disco series, it's propshaft is a bit shorter. Same bolts I think.
    Should you buy OE, OEM or Original Land Rover propshaft. Well from what you will see in the video OEM seem to be good enough and last you 4-6 years depending on the usage. Even with it being Britpart. But stay away from OE parts, OEM or original is the way to go. GKN, bearing seems to be what the Disco pro prefers.
    Symptoms on failing rear propshaft on the land rover discovery 3 could be vibrations, humming sounds and even clunking sounds when you apply quick on and off taps on the accelerator.
    The symptoms could be because of the center bearing rubber has started to tear, but the vibration and humming sounds could also be because of the notching on the rear universal joint.
    Can you replace the rear propshaft on a discovery 3 your self, in your garage at home or on the driveway or even on the street? Yes, you can, with basic tools and some E-torx, inverted torx as I call them, the job is fairly straight forward. I'm not a mechanic so if I can do it you can do it.

    GKN is the one to go for. That said, in both my D3 and Fiona's RRS I replaced the centre bearing and both were done over 2 years ago and still going fine. But you can only do this providing the UJ joints are ok otherwise it's a new complete shaft. No need to mark it if it's a complete new shaft as they are all balanced. Marking is only needed if you split the shaft or if you were removing a good shaft for access as it ensures it goes back in the same place with the assumption that it was fine installed that way before and so should be fine if you are refitting the same one 👍🏻

    • @richardguse3410
      @richardguse3410 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agree. The new replacement driveshaft, should be balanced and has nothing to do with previous markings.

      Thanks Simon and for the info update, I was thinking the same as I couldn’t find any info on why it should be marked.

      It has hold up good for the time in and 3-4 salty winters. I think that is also one thing that you get when buying oem vs oe, better coating on the propshaft and maybe better components in general. 🤔 Cheers to you both. 👍😊

    Just ordered one too!! Was about to change only the centre bearing bug got a propshaft from febi/bilstein at a good price and the I'll get the old one to getting refurbished and will serve then as a spare just in case! Cheers from Portugal

      Nice, it's the way to go I belive, and refurbishing the old one to keep as a spare is a great idea. I should probably have done the same just to test out if I could do it. My main problem as I pointed out in the video was the notching on the rear part, so could potentially start creating vibrations. But as a spare would be fine. Best from Norway, Simon. 👍

    Just changed mine yesterday. Absolutely doable, and thanks alot for this video! :) I thought i was getting a GKN one. Ordered from TechnoClassic, LR workshop in Norway. But it says Allmakes4x4 on the box and made in China. So guessing this wont last as long as i want it to.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it will be fine for some years. Since you've got it in Norway you always have the 5 years right to complain about the part. 😉 Should last longer than 5 years I would guess. It's an okay job todo, super easy if you got a lift, laying on the garage floor is the hard part. 😅

    FYI, usually you only mark the propshaft if you are replacing all the universal joints, you'd mark all along the propshaft u joints. It's good practice to balance the propshaft after replacing u joints.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you Terry! 😊 I Wasn’t really sure at the time why it manual says to mark it on removal on the D3, but as you say, if you have universal joints at both ends then they need to be marked and lines up. “Phasing” I found the term to be when people talked or wrote about it. I Read a lot about it but couldn’t find anything on why on the disco 3. Maybe if you replace the center bearing and need to align the front and rear part it is smart to mark it.

    Feel your pain working on the floor. Still doing that with my three Land Rovers and I am nearly 70. Cardboard is my friend, makes sliding under and out way easier and takes up no valuable vertical space. Underside of your LR3 looks really good. My 2016 RRS td6 has almost a totally rotted away fuel tank cradle which was bad at 45,000m and now at 71,000m really bad. Rubbish design and cheap metal and coating. Good luck on the trip.

    Hello Simon,
    thanks for the video and information of the propshaft. I also put a new one underneath. Do you have experience with the following: the parking brake works, but under heavy loads you hear the brake screeching. what could this be? regards

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey man and sorry for the late reply. Don’t use your EPB until you have serviced your parking brake, it is most likely pulling the brake too far and that’s why you get the sounds.
      I have a full series on the EPB on my channel so have a look. I had the same sound and eventually it locked up.

    Another excellent tutorial Simin. You make it look relatively easy...probably woulntbe as much fun on my driveway (no heated garage im afraid).
    I'm a little confused by your description of the various driveshafts. You say you had x2 Britpart ones but one was OE and the other OEM...not sure what you mean? 😮

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hehe, I like driveway repairs better, but during the summer when the temps is perfect, 15-20°C. The light is better and the fresh air is golden. 👌
      OE is the part spec the car came out of the factory with.
      OEM is parts being updated with a later spec due to failures and feedback. So better than OE. OEM is the latest part update other than the an Original part. When Land Rover releases a new update they release the old spec that becomes the new OEM spec.
      Original part should have the latest update and therefore be the best. If you don’t look at special parts made by a company that specializes in making that specific part. Like Brembo brakes, usually make better brake components due to them being specialists in the area.
      I hope that is clear. 🤔

    What's the procedure for jacking up a lr4 with air suspension i would like to do my own maintenance on it but scared to jack it up and mess up the air suspension

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey and sorry for the late replay. I have never had any issues with jacking the car with or without build mode. But I do use build mode now when I jack up. Garages also use build mode, it keeps the car from leveling when jacked. Basically it turns of the control module for the air suspension. You can get the same result by removing the air suspension fuse in the engine bay fuse holder. Not sure of the number but a quick google and you'll find it. 27 maybe... 👍 But as i said, jacking at home I have never had an issue on my Discovery 3. Simon

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it’s the components used to make the propshaft. I see a lot recommending the GKN version, I think it’s referring to the GKN bearing in the center.
      Other than that I think maybe how it’s painted and coated and how it’s handle the elements, like the salty winter roads we see here in Norway.

      That’s correct, I replaced an original prop shaft when put in the first one.
      Not sure if that one was a replacement or if it was on the car when it was built.
      The car had 100k km on the clock when I bought it, so these three are for the 126k km I have driven.
      One later today and I’m at 240k km in total and the latest prop shaft has been on for 15k km now. Still good. 👍
      Car was built in 2007, it’s a 2008 model year.

      Can't remember the first time, I think cost was a big issue back then. Only way I could afford getting and owning the Discovery was to repair and work on the car my self.
      And I guess I didn't know better. 😊
      Now the best option is the GKN version in terms of durability and price.
      Maybe I will go original on the next one to see if it holds longer than the GKN one I have on now. 🤔

      The brake light switch is also a thing to check. And only use original bulbs in the lights. Led-bulbs could rake havoc on the electrical system.
