Thanks for this - needed to see a comparison between the 8/10GB GPU on the M2 MBA. I’ve been considering the base M1 pro MBP 14 vs a medium specd up M2 MBA considering the price diff is now narrowing with current sales on the MBP. It felt silly to buy a MBA that was only a few hundred $$ less than the 14” MBP, but honestly the MBA fits my lifestyle better. I do some 3D modeling (biochem and chemistry applications) and I know the M1 pro MBP 14” works well for protein modeling but 3.5lbs is kind of not as portable for me and I’d prefer the M2 Air. I was afraid it wouldn’t be powerful enough for my science workflow but this video gives me more confidence that it will be fine. I am getting the M2 MBA 16GB, 10 core GPU, 512 SSD which is reasonable $$ with the education discount and promo. Sad the Midnight is insufferably smudgy, it’s gorgeous but I gotta go with the iconic silver ❤️💻

Quite warm in the UK ATM and no aircon in my top-floor flat, so very hot! Using my MB Pro M2 on my lap, in a protective case, it was warming up; as one would expect, I increased the fans by 50% and was nice and cool again. Though we do not get very high temps that often, I feel that having the backstop of a fan, especially with aircon per hour cost being very expensive, the MB Pro M2 was a good choice for me. I would say to those living in hot climates with no aircon (or who do not like to burn money using it) that the MB Pro M2 is a very sensible choice.

Yeah it will be interesting to see in a couple months time if someone receives a newly produced base M1 MBA and discovers the same SSD downgrade. Makes sense to me that they would do the downgrade if sourcing NAND is the issue. M1 MBA will still be sold in large quantities and probably outsell the M2 due to its lower price alone.

    • @kninezbanks
      @kninezbanks ปีที่แล้ว +16

Honestly, due to supply chain issues, Apple probably realized that they would be wasting two 128GB modules on the base M2 macbooks.....when they need them for their entire main Iphone lineup, Ipad air/mini updates etc....Most people that are getting a base macbook will never notice the difference in performance, 1500MB/s is still plenty fast......It's only if you use big programs that need a lot of memory and you have 8GB of RAM, in that case, Swap might be required, thus a performance decrease........If that is your workflow....There is a 99% chance you will be getting an M2 laptop with more ram and more storage.......or a higher tier macbook pro.....This SSD is a non-issue for 99% of M2 Macbook air buyers.

The chances of them putting back 2 chips in the same model is slim to none. There might be a chance they put it back in the next model. If you are worried, go for the 512gb storage model. Or build to order with upgrading the storage to 512gb

Another great, thought-out video. I like the combination of data and opionon. (as usual). I'm thinking of the 10 core with 16 gi of ram an the 512 ssd. I know it's close to the M1 MBP in price, but I don't video render. I would be upgrading from a 6 year old MBA. For me, I travel a bit. It's about the battery life and light weight. I get they all have great bl, but think the upgrades will give me a few more years of life.

I wonder if there are a number of apple engineers who simply like the Touch Bar; or software developers who are still developing software support for the Touch Bar, and they saw value in having a Touch Bar equipped laptop stick around for another revision. It does seem strange though, doesn't it!

On some of the GPU tasks, the 10 core MBP performance was exactly the same as 8 core base MBA whilst the higher spec MBA was way ahead.
The M2 MBP was hobbled by that SSD (though possibly 8GB memory as well). The question is what difference the two GPU cores actually make. Do they actually makes no difference as shown by the benchmark, or they do but the difference couldn’t be shown because they are bottle necked by the SSD & RAM.
There are sufficient people want to spec their MBA to 16G ram and 1TB SSD. The only way to really find out which GPU configuration is better is to have one 8 core and one 10 core configured to 16/1TB compete against each other.

I take some channels for granted sometimes, and this is one of them. It's nice to just hear a subject matter expert give an intelligent take on the differences/benefits/cons of the newest machines and their configs. Honestly, after watching all the agenda-driven garbage I've subjected myself to with respect to the M2 Pro and Air, it is just nice to hear a pleasant, non-yelling and logical discourse that is backed with ALL of the facts. There's no hiding or cherry picking facts to back up a point you wanted to make before you even opened the boxes and began testing the machines. It's really noticeable when someone goes into a review/comparison with an open mind and tells you what he found, especially someone who's this knowledgeable about Apple products.

But I have concerns about the ram. Should I go with 8gb ram, (8cpu/8gpu/512ssd) Would it be sufficient for having multiple apps and tabs etc open? . It would be great to have a comparison for different ram configs as well.
I’m also aware silicon chip is different than the İntel so I might not even need 16gb but would be great if I could get some opinions.

The 10C / 8C GPU both using the same amount of battery in the M2 Airs can probably be explained by the heatsink being saturated and throttling down to a level of performance/wattage at the limit of the heatsink, which of course is identical between them. The higher performing Air probably saturated earlier but also then throttled earlier, so probably averaged out to the same. Is a graph of FPS over the whole bech possible Luke? Or can you tell us what teh gfxbench FPS was at the end of the last run on the M2 airs?

Might want to run the 10 Core MBA vs the 8 Core MBA on an extended test, most other test I have seen has the 8 Core MBA running better, better FPS, faster render times, etc - over extended times, while the 10 Core is does better in short burst. Which makes no sense getting the 10 Core and they should remove it as an option on the MBA. I did pick up a MBP M2, that being said I'm probably sending it back and going back to a Windows laptop because they are still faster at the same price points, just not as efficient.

Depends on where you're from. In my Country the MB Pro 14" (16GB/512GB) costs exactly the same as the M2 MB Air with 16GB/512GB. And in that comparision the Pro is just better in every regard:
      Display,
      Ports,
      Performance (except Single core),
Has a fan (is a plus or minus, depending on who asks),
      better speakers
      ...
So just check your prices, is what I'm trying to say^^

Probably all the issues going on around the world and China shutting down had a major play on it, so they just beefed the m1 chip to give it a bit more juice to make sure people didn’t complain about old m1 being used for another year

    • @jakewilliams6128

One great thing Apple did with the M1 Macbook Pro models is that they stocked in-stores the upgraded 16GB/1TB models for walk-in shoppers. It cost more, but didnt require an online BTO order. I hope Apple will also be stocking 16GB/1TB models of the M2 Macbook air once they catch up with orders so that we can start to see how significantly higher spec'd models perform. With an education discount, that 16GB/1TB Midnight M2 Air would run $1759 and give you a $150 gift card back, so essentially $1609. What a bargain for a super modern Mac with tons of ram and tons of hard drive space!

As someone who games on my M1 MBA, I respectfully disagree that you should never consider a 13" Pro. On most games your framerate will be halved in less than 20 minutes. If you only do things that don't push the chip then yes, go with the MBA. If you need to sustain loads for long periods of time, then the MacBook Pro, with all its defects, is the one you should be getting. Not everyone has enough money to pony up the $2k that the base model 14" Pro costs, and sustained performance in the long run can be worth it.
