Brilliant solution Other benefits of a GPS spedo is no worries about changing spedo gear for different rear end ratios and since my radio has GPS built in I can set an over speed warning in case I go too fast. My GPS antenna is on the dash and works fine, I don't think ice or snow will stop the GPS signal but metal will.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a constellation of orbiting satellites operated by the US military. It used to be US Air Force, now I think it is US Space Force. The concept is the satellite knows its name and tells very precise time, and sends some additional blips. Each satellite broadcasts a low powered FM radio signal, and the receiver compares the other data and the time signals its antenna can receive. The more sky the antenna can see, the better the geometry the device can calculate. Therefore, mounting the antenna on a vertical surface like the glass, is asking for errors because the only satellites it can see are those in the 180-deg arc in front and above. Mount the antenna as high as you can with as much sky view as possible - despite the written instructions!
I need a new clock and I don't fancy paying £200 for a second hand one. It seems if you want gps mph you can have any size you want as long as it's 85mm. I've looked everywhere. No choice but to print an adapter plate I think.
@@BritannicaRestorations The biggest pain was trying to get a pulse from the speedo sensor. After a lot of head scratching it turned out that the brand new VDO speed sensor was non functional! So annoying.
I put larger diameter tyres on my Defender, and tried a smart phone app for a speedo - GPS, being in the states for mph. The OEM speedo is in Kph, works good for now. I really do like your idea Mike!
I have GPS speedo in my FORD pickup for several years, not problem. I have in process to put on roads my Landy and I will buy GPS speedo for , again. I have seen GPS speedo and RPM in same gauge too, and package with GPS, tacho, and others functions oil pressure, coolant temp, voltage, fuel level) in other same diameter gauge and 52" too, all those with senders . You can check what option fit for U
Hi Mike, if the GPS working bad put it flat on the dash , sticky side down, somewhere middle of the dash ( not in the corners), groet Han ( 1985 LR90V8 rhd )
Got GPS one in w460 g wagon when original failed. Works fine, im just too tight to pay the £600+ for a new one. G has the reliability but when it does need parts its eye watering!
IVE GOT THE EXACT SAME ONE IN MY LANDY THEY ARE SPOT ON.mine just sits on the top of the dash not even fixed down works a charm,it has to be able to see the satalites so it cannot be obstructed
How to Set Odometer ? - Press the back button for 2-3 seconds first and then turn on the power supply. - Release the button after seeing “ODO”; Press the button to set up the target odometer value. - After adjustment, release button first, then wait for menu to complete flashing. - Turn off the power supply, then turn on again. Odometer will record the setting.
It self-corrects if it goes through a tunnel, but let's face it - if you go through tunnels every single day then this is not for you as you have no GPS and could be caught speeding As for accuracy, when I pass the 50 km/hr warning displays that are common here - this unit is spot on
@@BritannicaRestorations I've used a GPS when my speedo metal cable broke - it's definitely more accurate. My watch GPS will keep working inside as far as distance goes using IMU I believe.
Strange. All these years I've been listening to you babble on and never before heard your trains. Spent a night in a US motel once and there was a track literally the other side of the rear wall. So funny when a train trundled past and things started to move off the table and fall on the floor. Straight out of "My Cousin Vinny".
200km/h? Someone’s hopeful! 😉
I would fit the GPS receiver underside of the top of the plastic instrument binnacle
Indicator lights is useful, in my ex military you can’t hear the ticker due to the thick metal fuse box…
Brilliant solution

had this idea for sometime, glad you're covering it
Works better than I thought!
Looks a nice unit, ideal of course if you have strange diff ratios or tyre sizes.
Yes - no need to work out speedo drive gears

I have the 3D print file for the adaptor that a viewer sent me
@@BritannicaRestorations Could I get it? Would save me a lot of time.
Send me your email address britrest@britrest.com
I wouldn't worry about the poor fitment in the dash Mike, using LR standards for panel gaps, that passes the quality control!
Maybe exceeds LR specs!?
I fitted a VDO Single Viu into my 90. Looks OEM and uses the green TD5 speed sensor. Nice kit!
Very nice!
But how much?

Works better than I thought. When I found out you can program the original mileage in - even better!
You only need the speedometer when you go through the several stop signs! Lol
2:55 Mechanic says "I look like a robber".
A moment of self-awareness. 😛
I'm in the process of a Defender MPi restoration and I'm considering this guage. Tachometer is going to be the tough one...
You can get a speedo with a built-in tach!

Works great in the corner of the screen = but a good idea to put it on the dash!

That is why I have nothing to do with them - Dealer only for parts in Canada
Interesting project. I really like the indicator direction on the gauge face! So you decided not to sell the 130 in the end?
Too many tyre kickers for the 130

I am really surprised in a place like Quebec we can see satellites with all the trees ( that are not on fire)
Can you please submit a link for the speedometer?

Are there any MOT implications? Since it won't be recording any speed on the rollers.
But the inspector will see it working when he drives it into the garage?
I would have made a little coin tray to replace the ash tray and incorporated the GPS sensor into that.
Are you able to set the mileage to match the removed gauge ?

@@BritannicaRestorations I was wondering about ODO tampering. I'm still a little surprised GPS is legal for speed. Tunnels and pârking don't count??
