    I looooove the night circus and I would highly recommend her other novel, the starless sea. But I would say that it also has a very light magic system and a lot of unanswered questions - it's more about the feel and wonderfully magical and bookish vibe. A lot of people have complained it has no plot and honestly that's fair. But I would still highly recommend it.

    • @Scottlp2
      @Scottlp2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The night circus was magical (even with limitations eg little character development), and I hope she develops as a writer. I read enough to suspect what you said about the second one and haven’t read it.

    The Night Circus sounds more like magical realism than fantasy! Maybe a lot of the problem people have with it is they think it will be a fantasy with rules and a conclusion but the purpose of magical realism is that it is mysterious (like real magic).

  • @februaryfriday1352

    i was so torn when i read the night circus.
    i absolutely loved the writing and the concept. everything was so whimsical and intricate, but i think my main issue is how underdeveloped marco and celia’s relationship was. it was all so sudden and i honestly don’t know why they even like each other. there was not any real build up and i wanted to see their relationship develop instead of it just appearing.
    [spoiler:
    like they haven’t seen each other in years and rarely talked to each other and then he just suddenly says he is in love with her??? i laughed out loud when i read that because it seemed so ridiculous to me]
    still, there are so many beautiful scenes between them and i did find myself rooting for them in the end. it felt pretty much like a fever dream and i’m still not sure what i think about it (and i’ve read it in september so it’s been a while indeed), i definitely have to reread it to make up my mind!

    • @emilie_b5346
      @emilie_b5346 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yeah i was torn as well. I read it while still figuring out my change of taste in books and I couldn't understand why i didn't like it at first. Now I know that the slow pacing was a huge negative point for me. I felt bored. And I knew this book wasn't supposed to be realistic in any way but the plot resolves around those two characters and it was indeed underdeveloped.

    • @legumesss
      @legumesss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Agreed! I also felt like they were both pretty bland. I couldn't tell you a single personality trait that they have. I did like Marco's exgirlfriend though. She deserved better.

    • @Scottlp2
      @Scottlp2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was a great book, but the main character was the circus itself. Not much character development at all.

    • @Janine.G.
      @Janine.G. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I absolutely agree! From what I read in the synopsis I expected them to be opponents in the contest but I also expected a slowburning romance of the enemies to lovers kind. I wanted to read scenes with them in the same room, the air between them charged with magic and emotions and I was pretty disappointed when all I got was them not meeting each other for 90% of the book and then some unmotivated instalove in a ball scene. I did like the circus and the atmosphere though.

      @@Janine.G. Yes, the like 1.5 chapters they spend together that are charged with magic and emotions are my fav of the whole book

    I read The Night Circus 3 times by now, and I can tell you that I love it more each time. I think the first time I was just captivated by the circus itself, as if it was the main character in the story (which it kinda is), pretty much like you. With my rereads I think I understand certain plot points a bit more, some complexities of the characters that I hadn’t noticed before, some metaphors for different education systems for example, and also a very fairytale-esque aspect of it, of a contest that is somehow a curse and star crossed lovers and sacrifices for a bigger cause. All of those details made me appreciate the story more, and then it didn’t matter that some things don’t make a lot of sense, because they don’t always have to. But I can see that it isn’t for everyone and it’s completely valid. Great video as always and love the makeup!

    If you like middle grade fantasy with magical academies and an intrinsically linked protagonist and villain, would highly recommend the school for good and evil!! It’s a series, I’ve only read the first three but I think that it wraps up really nicely in the third one - it’s about two best friends, one who is a stereotypical ‘princess type’ and one who is a stereotypical ‘hag’ type and they go to a magical academy, with one school for ‘good’ and one school for ‘evil’ and they seem to get put in the wrong schools (no spoiler this is in the synopsis), and you spend the whole of the three books trying to work out who is the villain and who is the protagonist!! It has rly good friendship development - would highly recommend ☺️

    I liked the first 50% of Shadow and Bone-I was already in love with the world and the atmosphere Leigh creates in her books, and I liked learning more about the Grisha. The last half of the book dragged, I wasn’t really interested in the romance, the journey got a bit tedious at times, and the ending felt very underwhelming to me, I thought that Alina won too easily. Her character wasn’t as compelling but it didn’t bother me too much. I think a lot of hype for the show and other people’s edits and fanart buoyed my enjoyment for the book and I think if I hadn’t read Six of Crows I wouldn’t have wanted to buy to continue this series. My favorite part of the book was easily Alina and Genya’s friendship and Genya as a whole

    Rebecca Solnit has a wonderful personal essay type book called "The Faraway Nearby" which I thought was excellent! It's a little newer than Hope in the Dark too, I never felt that outdated sense with it. I think her writing, especially in this more memoir-ish style, is really stunning and full of depth and vulnerability. In it she makes a lot of really cool connections between life, literature, art, and science. If you're ever interested in giving her another chance :)

    so I borrowed Shadow & Bone from my friend in 2020, and I was SO put off by all the, "how could he ever find me attractive when he's surrounded by GORGEOUS GRISHAS ALL THE TIME?!". I know I was that kind of teenager, but it doesn't appeal to me now. While I do still deal with self esteem issues, this kind of stuff just doesn't appeal. Now that I am retired I am trying to get away from computer text including (Kindle). Many years ago before computers, I had tons of paperback books you could purchase at the grocery store for peanuts. The first book I remember reading was "Davy Jones Locker". That book marked me with non-fiction reading. I will admit I read 1/2 of "Little Big Man" before I saw it was (FICTION). Anyway, I always do long-winded comments and I never comment on a video unless I watch 100%. Have a good day :)

      Just a suggestion - please try SIx of Crows instead.. I think Leigh Bardugo really levelled up with that one. Plus if you have the basics of the Grishaverse down, you might really enjoy it?

    The way I'd describe the romance/love sory difference, at least in this book, is that the love story is important but not the actual story. The relationship is central and affects and moves forward the plot , but the actual romance content (like romantic scenes) isn't that much. In romances, romance fantasies etc there's a lot of pagetime with characters falling in love, thinking about each other and stuff like that (idk I'm not an expert on romance). There are scenes like this in The Night Circus, but they're just a part of the puzzle, the story is about the Circus, and follows many characters. The love story is similar in Erin Morgenstern's other book, The Starless Sea. It's important but it's not the point of the book. Tbh I liked that one even more than The Night Circus.
