I grew up on Steely Dan. Every morning I would listen to their songs on the way to school. They are a master group of musicians.

fagen and becker actually played in jay and the americans band starting out,jay black (lead vocalist) referred to both as the starkweather and manson of music

This song, with its great back beat shuffle (Mr.Purdie at his finest) is so rich and smooth. It’s like you are being pulled through the story of the song with all of the musical colors and textures. Ear Candy for sure!!

I was a teen when I first heard Steely Dan. Aja captivates me. The percussion, sax, guitar and drums spoke to me. As they were a studio band at the time, I bought all LP’s with their studio artists. Tom Scott, Steve Gadd, Victor Feldman, Michael McDonald, Larry Carlton, Jeff Pocara, Pete Christlieb and many more. They opened my world to music. Such a terrific group.

Cece, What's always stood out for me about Steely Dan is the smoothness, guitar/sax solos and backing vocals (and everything else!). They really outdid themselves with the backing vocals and horns in this one. Their "Josie" and "Deacon Blues" are next for you!

So far you're the only reactor I've found who's reacted to Steely Dan. Donald Fagin and Walter Becker (who is sadly no longer with us), to my mind, capture the essence of parts of the USA that we never see. Babylon Sisters is about an ageing gay man who's trying to recapture his youth and stave off loneliness by having a probably doomed relationship with a younger man. No one was telling these kinds of stories in their songs in the 1970s. One of my all-time favourite bands. I love the undertones in their work.

This is a song about a middle aged white man who wants to taste the sweetness of chocolate. He chooses a young African American prostitute to have his desire fulfilled. His friends try to warn him that this could change his life. He might not be able to stop his quench for prostitutes who can give him his fantasies. In the lyrics you can notice it's sister not sisters like the title. He's nervous in the city and wants her to turn music down until they leave city. He doesn't want to be recognized. Once out of city they go and party and he wants the young African American girl to shake. He wants what he thinks a young African American girl should act like. There's no conclusion to the story,
