Gymrail Momentum X1 Rocker Plate System Review

  • This is the most expensive trainer rocker plate and motion system you can buy for your smart trainer. I dive into how it works, how it compares, and whether or not I find it worth it.
    The Gymrail Momentum X1 which is by far one of the craziest rocker contraptions I’ve seen make it to production. Unlike most rocker plates, this is a split-component design (kinda like the Inside Ride E-Flex system). This means that you’ve got one portion holding up your front fork doing its thing, while another holds up your entire trainer and remainder of the bike frame.
    Between these two components, you and your bike will tilt side to side while concurrently moving forward and backwards. Your handlebars also rotate slightly (which is what enables rotation elsewhere in the bike). However, the kicker here is that unlike most rocker systems, the rear/trainer portion of your bike also moves laterally side to side, thus accenting movement (both steady-state and sprint). And that combined with the rotational portion allows the whole thing to kinda ‘snake’ along.

    I bought:
    - a kitchen-top from ikea
    - 2 inflatable balance boards
    - a plastic twist board
    I got 2.5 planes of motion (steering, left/right and a bit of back/forth) with about 50 euro.

    • @jazznroll5
      @jazznroll5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chapmag6578 It is really easy. You inflate the 2 balance board at the same level, more or less. Then you place the kitchen-top at the top of the 2 balance board, with the middle of them being at the same point. Then stick some antislip tape on the kitchen-top, at the contact points of the trainer. Finally put on the trainer and make adjustments so the whole system is horizontal.
      As for steering, stick some antislip tape on it, add some soft material, like a piece of a cheap yoga mat, on top. Then add on top, the front wheel holder that came with your trainer and you are ready to go.

    I have been using this X1 system since 28.1.2022 and I would never go back to trainer alone or any other rockerplate.
    Plate and brackets are very easy to put on their place, you doesn't need to be an engineer to fix brackets where your trainer needs them most.
    I also got those lesser tension springs and because I am 92kg rider those were quite loose on hard sprints. But now I have those more progressive (+20% front and +40% rear) springs and this "wiggle" movement is not a case anymore.
    Rear and front unit also has adjustable rubber cushions and by adjusting those inner/outer side will effect for tilting side to side, but also for that sway movement.
    If you are planning a sprinting exercises on X1 you should move all cushions outer side. That will make tilting stiffer, but it will also effect for sway making it little more stiffer.
    But if rear end sways too much the main reason is bad pedaling technique. I have learned that and made my pedaling technique much more effective.
    My power phase was before Gymrail about 0 - 195 degrees, but now I have much longer power phase from 350 - 215 degrees.

      On the contrary, allowing the freedom of motion that they add is BETTER than placing the same bike into that rigid trainer on a hard floor. If you move off-center or apply any torque to the bike (which pretty much happens all the time and specifically for efforts at and above Threshold), you are applying larger loads to the frame. These fixed trainers lead to higher forces and related stress on the frame than they will see when used on a motion platform.

    • @Chader9
      @Chader9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not great. The fore-aft motion here relies on a smooth and flat floor. It's one of the key criticisms I had when they introduced it a while ago. I am surprised they didn't build a "stand" that contained that motion like they did for the front end. The whole unit is odd to me because each end is built with different methods and materials. Looks unprofessional and lacks the ability to deal with imperfect floors. Even common carpet floors are a problem that would require additional material like plywood or other flooring to be added to use this.

    I got the Saris rockerplate and I hate it. I used it a few times and I just couldn't get used to the unnatural spring-back. It's now a $1400 decoration in my basement storage area. This sounds interesting, but I'm afraid of being let down again with a HEFTY price tag. Plus, this isn't available in the USA, according to the ship-to selection. I'd love to try this, but not risking a gigantic price.

    • @Chader9
      @Chader9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like you dislike the notably strong leveling springs that Saris chose to use. It's a complaint that I and others have mentioned since it was introduced. They chose to have a very supportive force, but it leads to what I consider a counter-intuitive ride for at least some riders. At the price they sell them, I feel an adjustable leveling spring would be appropriate. Having the option to increase or decrease the leveling spring forces adds great function to these motion plates. It's possible that you might prefer a lower force like I and others do. Hopefully you can try a different motion plate in the future that gives that option. The MP1 is a fine start, but I feel it falls short in meeting the needs of at least some riders.

    Are trainers even balanced left/right to start with?

    • @Chader9
      @Chader9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not usually. Most with a physical flywheel have that placed enough off-center that the trainer is heavy on that side (usually the left). We typically suggest adding a 10lb [5kg] weight to the outer edge of a rocker on the right side, to properly balance the rocker. It is possible to balance with unequal leveling spring forces, but that leads to slightly asymmetric forces to lean the bike each direction, especially at greater lean angles. The most even lean forces come with use of a counterweight and equal leveling spring forces.

    But is it a more comfortable ride with a rocker?

    • @Chader9
      @Chader9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Are you asking about this X1 as compared to rigid setup or other rockers. In short, adding motion to just about any training setup will improve comfort. The overly rigid setup we get with most trainers is totally unlike the freedom we have when riding outside. That locked aspect leads to excessive loading on the muscles and tissues that support us while on the trainer.
      Adding just about any level of motion that lets the saddle move a bit more under us, which reduces the over-pressure issue we get from a fixed setup. There are certainly a range of needs when it comes to motion. Some are very happy with minimal motion while others want very active setups more like what this X1 provides. I am happy we are seeing more options that cover the range of preferences.

    Very surprising to hear Ray say that he doesn't care about form on an indoor trainer! The front end of this trainer looks interesting - perhaps adding realism and comfort. The rear seems to create an unrealistic ride promoting poor form making the overall system a thumbs down for me.

      Adjustment springs needs to be more stiffer and also tilting side-to-side could be adjusted easily with rubber bumpers.
      Every movement is adjustable depending on rider weight, riding style etc.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My comment on form is specific to sprinting. Poor form in this case is specific to sprinting being opposite of the real-world outside. My stance is that for the vast majority of people, I don't see the value in learning a new form that's opposite the outdoor form, merely to make it prettier for people on the internet to watch. I haven't seen any evidence that inverting ones sprinting form on a rocker plate does anything scientific (or training benefit), other than appeasing others.

      @Chader9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't have much fore-aft motion without adding a hard surface for the rear section. It's a design flaw, IMO. Not sure why they build the front and rear sections so differently where the front is fully self-contained, while the rear requires a certain floor condition. It's possible to make it similarly and work independent of the floor, like the InsideRide E-Flex works.

      I really wonder where this information comes from??
      Because we haven't had any problems with the exercise mat, concrete floor or parquet even though it has been tested several times.
      The most important thing is that the floor is flat in the lateral direction. Longitudinal tilt can be corrected with adjustable feet.
      I don't know why this is commented on, even though you haven't even seen the product.

      The MX1 works just fine with a flat and sturdy exercise mat. Wheels also roll well on a soft carpet, but it’s not the best platform. The important thing is that the mat stays straight under the tires and therefore the anti-slip rubber mat works well.

    • @Chader9
      @Chader9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harrisalmenautio602 Sorry you see my words as "hard". My information comes from observation of this review, your videos & pictures, and the few user videos of the X1. It also includes my personal experience as a mechanical designer & builder familiar with all the components & design features clearly in use. It's quite possible to make observations & related comments based upon that information without an actual ride on the unit.
      Considering your reply, I seem to be correct about the lack of full function on some carpets as a native surface. You mention several additions that are needed in order to support the wheels of the rear section in order to allow proper fore-aft motion if carpet is the initial surface. Notably, "carpet" is a broad term and it's possible that this may work on some types while not on others. For those others, it seems you admit that something additional is needed ("exercise mat, concrete floor or parquet") in order to use the X1 on a carpet surface. And the consideration of the under-pad present with much of the carpet that gets used with it, is another consideration that would likely lead to poor F-A motion. Fine for that additional surface on top of the carpet to be a requirement, but it is good for potential buyers to know that up front.
      My intentions aren't to "raise doubts", but rather to answer the question posed by the person above. I try to help with that questions just like this based upon my experience building and using rocker plates since late 2015. I mentioned what I see as a design flaw aspect because there seems notable difference in the design and build of each section. One is fully self-contained while the other relies on a certain floor condition. That aspect has been noted and mentioned below by others here. That aspect has also been discussed in our FB RP group where you have seen them as well.
      You seem to have taken my comments above as personal or an attack, which is not the intention at all. I am sharing my thoughts and opinion as I do with any other trainer motion device. No offense or attack meant on my part, so I am sorry if you took it that way. I am just trying to help people learn about and understand the growing landscape of trainer motion options.

    Do you trust your $20k bike on something like this? I guess if you can afford a $20k bike you are either buying a full trainer bike like the wahoo kickr or you can afford a cheapo aluminum bike. Rocking independently on the front fork alone looks scary.

      Practically speaking, this has more flexibility for the frame than a $1,200 Wahoo KICKR does. So in that sense, it'd theoretically be better for the frame. Of course, the entire 'is it OK for your frame' trainer discussion never had any merit to begin with, which is why we've never seen any actual issue despite millions of trainers sold.

    Looks lethal. And kinda pointless. Definitely the point at which you should just go for a ride outside. For the cost you can even get a whole training bike if you don't want the 'good' or 'trainer' bike out in the weather.

    These things are so lame. None of them feel real. And its really not worth the expense.
