For spinning reels, you also MUST loosen that first knob to allow the spool and cage to spin freely. That eliminates line twist. It tried to do that on its own, which is why the cage kept tilting on you. It's supposed to rotate. You only lock the cage to put line on casting reels, where the two spools stay aligned. I have one of these devices and it works perfectly - if you follow the directions.
