I agree with your proper engineering comment. I'm glad they added an actual heatsink but I still think that the heatsink feature could be improved in use and not just while charging. With my Hero 9 I had to rig all kinds of makeshift external heatsinks including adding a third party all aluminum mount and removing the battery door when in use. Otherwise the cam would shut down, or freeze. Removing the side door removed the al-weather use. When I added the media mod so I could use a better external microphone, the mod acted like an insulator and made it worse. It also helped to add a larger overall metal frame mount when mounting on a baseball diamond's chain-link backstop.
This is fascinating. I had the same problem but with one big exception. When charging, I would get the warning, the LEDs would extinguish, but the camera was not hot. It was barely warm. The charging would resume spontaneously a few minutes later. Two days ago when I was trying one of the fixes that customer service suggested, there was a firmware update. I installed it and the warning and charging pause did not occur. Again the camera was not at all hot through the entire battery charging process. I will observe what happens the next time I run the battery down. Like you, I also have several other GoPros, and I have not experienced this problem with any of them. In fact I have never had any of them to shut down from overheating, unless I thoughtlessly did something to trigger it. So this is completely new to me and hopefully something that can be resolved with firmware updates quickly
My 13 Black is also having charging issues. Very picky about what cable is used, overheats anyway, and auto upload straight up is not working at all...
i just bought mine and i haven't even gotten to use it yet and i've already noticed that when im playing around in the settings, while charging the gopro, the battery level goes down. this is with the same anker 20W charger i use to charge my iphone.
I totally agree with you, i used to have and love gopro cameras, but since the overheating became a problem, a switched to DJI and i happy with that, i'm still following new releases but i'm not like what i see, how gopro handle problems nowdays, funfact, i still have my gopro hero6, that isn't overheat a single time, its very hot when i use as a dashcam, but it's still reliable.
I agree with you that users shouldn't have to create workarounds for avoidable design flaws. This particular flaw isn't going to affect me (I don't upload from the camera), but I'm still going to skip this generation to see if there's at least two generations using the same batteries etc.
i'm confused. i've been planning to take some very long GoPro footage of motorcycle rides, some which may last 4hrs or more. to accomplish this i was told by several GoPro users that i should remove the battery and plug the camera into power while riding and filming. they said the GoPro should not overheat in this scenario. do you think your overheating problems had something to do with the uploading video process, or do you think i will run into the same problem? thanks
Maybe it's a good time to start to use non problematic cam like DJI Action 5 Pro or 4 ?? Better low light, no overheat, no crush, 4h battery life - no problems..
I’ve been using GoPros to record soccer matches in 4k60 and had to slap smartphone coolers onto them so I could record 2hr matches with charging. The whole system is super self-made and complex with multiple powerbanks required. GoPro is losing me on this one…
Great Vid, thank you. I was just about to buy a Hero 13, which is now heavily discounted. The Hero 12, a lesser camera is still not discounted. Does it work as it should? Well done in calling Go-Pro out. Can you imagine if it was something like a car....dare I say a Tesla, that just stopped on a Highway and you had to sit in the middle of the road for it to 'cool down' In the USA there would be a 'class action' against Tesla and quite rightly so! Maybe this should happen to Go-Pro? Please can we have some clear guidelines from journalists and commentators regarding this shambles from Go-Pro. Maybe this is why their share price has plummeted in the past 6 months? Any advice please? My current hobby is Snorkelling, and when a previous Go-Pro failed I bought an Akaso, which I was pleased with 7/10. However I decided to give Go-pro another 'go'..........Should I?
Despite this flaw with the Hero 13, it’s still a great camera. In my opinion, it records the best looking footage out of any action camera on the market. And it shouldn’t overheat while you’re snorkeling. Water and air flow keeps it cool. The new DJI camera has better low light performance, if that’s important to you. But I prefer the look of GoPro footage when lighting is good
They're overclocking a old 12 nanometre processor, So of course it's going to get hot and unstable /crash/lag . DJI are using a processor using the 4Nm, faster more efficient processor . Gp , all that heat is energy wasted, So they've had to compensate by giving you a bigger battery and magnetic charging
Classic GoPro. Make a flawed product and "fix" it later with updates. Oh I hope the auto industry doesn't get this lazy. And no thanks, I don't want any of my cameras getting hot! Thanks for the warning and video X-Tech
How DJI can make Action 5 pro record in 4K for over 3 hours straight without overheat still baffle me, I was always believe in Gopro's lie about how people should accept that small body and big processing power will always cause overheating.
I think gopro now is junk. I had a camera I think it was a nikon that recorded great. Never over heated never shut down never any problems this was in iraq heat of 120 degrees some days it barely gets to 100 in Wyoming and nothing but issues. My gopro 8 didn't do this unless it was truly hot. Very disappointed these cameras cost alot and it's nothing but shit.
I just don't understand how a 600 dollar camera can't stay on. It keeps shutting down. Even when it isn't hot. I've used old cameras were it will shut down but it was hot I get it but there were times I turn the dumb thing on and not 2 second later it's fighting me to stay on.
It's a feature, it doubles up as a hand warmer
I am done with GoPro... "I believe the GoPro 13 is essentially an overclocked version of the 12."

Have had the same issue. Charging and upload have been unreliable. Hope a firmware update will address this.
mine's stopped while charging too, but not with uploading. I was just changing some setting
i just bought mine and i haven't even gotten to use it yet and i've already noticed that when im playing around in the settings, while charging the gopro, the battery level goes down. this is with the same anker 20W charger i use to charge my iphone.
same problem here , just bought it and I can't charge it. It just keep overheating when reaching 90%

Thank you for your review
do you keep the camera turned on while charging ? I am confused
If not turned on, how you auto upload? Did you listen to what he said? Do you understand what "upload" mean?
It turns on automatically when you plug it in to begin auto uploading
i'm confused. i've been planning to take some very long GoPro footage of motorcycle rides, some which may last 4hrs or more. to accomplish this i was told by several GoPro users that i should remove the battery and plug the camera into power while riding and filming. they said the GoPro should not overheat in this scenario. do you think your overheating problems had something to do with the uploading video process, or do you think i will run into the same problem? thanks
I think it’s just from auto uploading. You should be fine. Especially considering the airflow you’ll have while riding a motorcycle
If it won't overheating without battery, why it cannot be a battery compatibility issue?
Only in California can a defect be called a "feature"
Get the action 4 instead...You are welcome....
I haven't had a problem yet with this. Maybe I am lucky or my downloads aren't long enough to do this!
Maybe it's a good time to start to use non problematic cam like DJI Action 5 Pro or 4 ?? Better low light, no overheat, no crush, 4h battery life - no problems..
This is just never an issue on my DJI cameras including the Action 4 and now my new Action 5 Pro.
I’ve been using GoPros to record soccer matches in 4k60 and had to slap smartphone coolers onto them so I could record 2hr matches with charging. The whole system is super self-made and complex with multiple powerbanks required. GoPro is losing me on this one…

This is crazy
Gotta love the brand plebs saying " go to DJI instead ".
Mine hasnt overheated whilst charging/uploading - Gopro hero 13.
How DJI can make Action 5 pro record in 4K for over 3 hours straight without overheat still baffle me, I was always believe in Gopro's lie about how people should accept that small body and big processing power will always cause overheating.
It’s true I sometimes run my action 4 literally for half a day with a few small breaks
Dji reduced the bitrate significantly thus it seems not to overheat or have problems. The trickery from china we have come to accept i guess
I will never buy another gopro again I'm going to try dji or I think it is called osmo. I have heard great things about the action 5.

i just use it 20 mins and already overheating, wtf, should have bought dji 5 😢
Super unstable. Get a DJI Action 5 (or 4 for that matter).
Seem there like Crapple now.
Not innovating and have a serious problem? Wtf, GoPro. More like GoNoob now.
I always charge my batteries with an external charger.
Does not solve the issue
@@avronaut sure it does. No overheating.
gopro is garbage.
DJI: No problems ever! Action 5 Pro is amazing!

I call BS
