- In this Wireless Philosophy video, Matthew Chrisman (University of Edinburgh) explores the concept of civil disobedience, especially as it concerns law-breaking protests within liberal democracies.

So happy that WiPhi is still active.

Thank you and sorry! It's been a bit busy with our (normal) jobs. But we have about 20 new videos almost entirely ready which we will be publishing!
@@WirelessPhilosophy glad to hear it! I really liked this video :)
Thanks so much for another top-tier philosophy video! I'm so glad that Wireless Philosophy is still active; this is undoubtedly one of the all-time best philosophy channels on TH-cam by a longshot! 💪😎💯☮️

@@WirelessPhilosophy Sure thing ^-^ I was both surprised and thrilled to have noticed a notification from here (:
Ah, not to worry, I totally understand that life can easily become quite imposing on ancillary endeavours such as this. I'm just jocund that WiPhi plans to continue offering more of this superlative content (:
Cheers!

Thank you for continuing to make more videos.
Thanks for posting another video! Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to more on the epistemology series.
Great channel, producing great content
I think the second objection, where this is too idealized, may be the strongest objection. If we look at history, we see the majority killing off minority groups and deeming them subhuman, thereby making it more palatable for the majority.
The archetypical example nowadays is the Holocaust: a dictator decided to kill off Jews, homosexuals, political prisoners, racial minorities, etc., and there were even cases of civil disobedience. But we see empirically that civil disobedience did little to change the public's mind.
In the USA, a majority of people never approved same sex marriage when it came to a ballot measure. It took a controversial Supreme Court ruling where the 4 descending Justices each wrote their own opinions saying why gay people shouldn't be given the right to marry. Sometimes reasoned debate fails because one side doesn't see the humanity of the other.
"Sometimes reasoned debate fails because one side doesn't see the humanity of the other", they are protecting themselves (reputation) or are gaining from it (corruption).
Great video, thanks Matthew! I should add your class in this was fantastic, highly recommended for anyone considering studying philosophy at Edinburgh!
Yay!!!
Please make more videos! There's much new philosophy to explore.
Much simplified. Thanks Prof.
Very informative and straight the the point
Is there a term for government disobedience to its people?
nice.
Civil disobedience today would simply be refusing to participate, you could literally be arrested for refusing to participate!
stop wasting your time trying to match the hand with the computer graphics - it distracts from the video.
"people in other countries"... draws a continent
So, kill the rich?
One goes to the bus, other refuses the muzzle when going to get the groceries.
That is an example of the fallacy of false equivalence. Segregation were based on white supremacy. They were based on the idea that white people were inherently better, and deserved better treatment than black Americans. Mask laws are based on the fact that if you are unvaccinated, and go out without a mask, you could be spreading a deadly disease that could kill other people.
Wearing a mask is nothing like segregation laws. Wearing a mask is like not being allowed to drink and drive.
@@km1dash6 Both of these are a matter of human rights. Refusing a mask is common sense against insanity and advancing medical technocracy.
Unfortunately, this speech is incoherent. Mumbling and speaking too fast doesn't help in teaching. Please train yourself to speak slower, and use simpler analogies. The point of youtube is to appeal to the masses, not your informed colleagues. Thanks
What are you talking about? I found it simple and concise. If it's too fast that's not a problem on TH-cam, just pause, rewind, replay.
If you click on the cog on the bottom right of the video and then choose playback speed, you can slow down the video from .75 to .25%. I don't believe that you intended to come off rude (hopefully), but next time try portraying your opinion in a less negative/less attack sounding fasion.
