As an Australian I love Malaysia for the following reasons:
Proximity and accessible, it’s only a 7 or 8 hour flight from Sydney and there are many direct flights, also from KL you can get to almost anywhere in Asia and Europe.
Affordable-As mentioned, Malaysia is so budget friendly and I’m not even talking about cheap alcohol and street food but in terms of accommodation, transport, tours, etc
Local hospitality-As mentioned English is widely spoken so there’s less of a language barrier and the locals are extremely friendly for the most part.
Cultural diversity-within Malaysia you have 3 large ethnic groups being Malay, Chinese and Indian, in many western countries we have diversity but it’s different, in Malaysia the cultures peacefully co exist whilst maintaining their own identity. What is most unique is the food as there’s a lot of natural fusion in the dishes which is unique and delicious

Alcohol is very cheap in Langkawi Island. But still alcohol price in Malaysia is cheaper than Singapore, USA, and some European countries.

If I could get my dog there comfortably I'd be out of the US, but I just heard of The nightmare scenario where they held people on their way to KL at Mumbai for 48 hours and couldn't go through the stress of knowing my dogs in cargo for that long without food or water, possibly freezing and having to poop on themselves, what's happening to him or if he's even going to make it. That little guy is all I got
Just lack of guts.So forget the trip.. Malaysia is among the most civilised country on earth for those without biased.

I miss those days when KL weren’t so popular. It used to be Asia’s best kept secret. But I do also love hearing tourists loving this city. My only hope is that tourists especially from the west to learn to not be rowdy here like how it usually happens in Thailand or Indonesia as we don’t like don’t like that kind of attitude in public.
Why is KL popular? I think a better question might be why are Bangkok and Singapore less popular destinations? Let's face it, KL competes with Bangkok and Singapore for tourist dollars. Unfortunately, both have become little more than big cities much like other big cities around the world. How, for example, is Bangkok different than New York City? Kuala Lumpur might be heading in the same direction but it's not there yet, which is why I think it is attractive to long-distance travelers.

This is why KL is my favourite city that I have been to and I have travelled to many cities like Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Rome, Lisbon, Barcelona, Athens etc.
It has everything that suits my needs on so many levels
If u are in Malaysia and u encounter someone who doesn't speak or understand english (eg staff in shops, eateries etc), the chances are they are immigrants from other countries, not Malaysians. People make this mistake thinking everyone that works in these places are locals when in fact, they are lots of foreigners especially from other Asian countries who work in these businesses. The fact is if u know english, u can easily & comfortably live in Malaysia forever without knowing a single word of the local languages. If u need to go to any government agencies, they all speak english. The cops, doctors, nurses, rescue workers, bank staff, teachers etc all speak english. Also pretty much everything is written in english (signboards, instructions, tickets, local apps etc)
My experience is a bit different. Many of the foreign workers speak BM much better than I do. When I worked here I saw one guy every morning at a local Subway sandwich shop. He was from Nepal and spoke very good BM compared to me, who lived here for 6 years full time and only have a basic understanding of the language. You're right about the English though.
@@InternationalBigshot Sure but the difference is Nepalese who come here to work generally don't speak english too well to begin with therefore learning malay comes naturally also the easier/better option. Like I said earlier, if u already know english, u don't really need to learn any local languages unless u want to. Malaysians will be very appreciative if u do, but we don't really care if u don't :)
We'd be appreciative if you guys DO try to pick up our national language, Bahasa Malaysia, tho ;)

I was driving Grab car in Penang one day and I met two tourists from Scotland and Armenia. Surprisingly both of them know about Malaysia even they live so far away from us .
I've been to KL 4 times over the last 7 yrs. I agree the locals speaking some english is great. I'm always visiting Vietnam & Malaysia, my 2 most favorite places. If Vietnamese locals spoke more english, hands down they would get all of my travel dollars. So for now theyre sharing with Malaysia. I've been to KL; Penang & Melaka & loved them all.
Language is what sparked the idea for this video. Being able to communicate with others removes a lot of barriers. It's easy to come to KL and be able to visit a foreign country but when you're still able to use a little of whatever language you know it's not as foreign and becomes much more comfortable.
How about Thailand?
My personal experience is that fewer people in Thailand speak English. When I go there I usually head to Chiang Mai and the surrounding area, so I'm talking about there. I've only been to Bangkok a few times and I suspect that use of English is more widespread.

Dont worry about English on Malaysia. It's widely spoken, its the common commercial language, in urban area most Chinese, Indian and to big portion of Malays able to communicate in English. Infact English is the 1st language being used by any Chinese or Indian in city.

I love KL so much! I grew up in a thick forest jungles in Borneo,no sound of vehicles,We hear only the sound of river flows and chirping birds.Way too far from the city,there is no clinic,hospital,shopping malls etc.We live in a rural area,very small communities.
1996 at the age of 19 we flew from Miri Sarawak Borneo to Kuching then KL with a group of peoples recruited Us to work at one of the privates hospital in Selangor at that particular time.They employed more peoples from Sabah & Sarawak to serve in the privates health care services.
At Sunway Putra KL every sunday attended event since March 2023.I love watching sky scrapers the PNB 118 Building,KL Tower and The Twin Tower/KLCC.
Late Actor P.Ramlee and Actress Saloma brought such an impact into Malaysian industries film way back in the 1980’s.Similar to the American late Singer Elvis Presley.These are the Legend 🎉.
Past 16 years I’m depending on the public transport,accesible to any destinations with Touch N Go/KTM card,walkable daily routines for work.
We travelled to Penang Island,Langkawi Island,Perhentian Island,Tioman Island,Genting Highland,Cameron Highland,Taman Negara Pahang,Pangkor Island,Perak,Johore Bahru Danga Bay,Muar,Port Dickson,Kota Bharu Kelantan we drove with a group of friends more than 20 hours! We do camping,not forget to mentioned travel by bus to Hadyai Thailand,2010 Singapore and Bali.Sabah Borneo 2022 attended cousin engagement.
I am definitely love KL so much!Amazing shopping mall,shoppe never ending stories,great places of food hunt.Malaysia truly ASIA 🇲🇾

But still european countries condemn Malaysia due to deforestation but infact east Malaysia still more thn 60% greener.

@@azamshah9363 Trees around the city may be nice, but the incredible deforestation for the palm oil industry is unfortunately indeed a fact, that rightfully receives a lot of criticism from the international community.
not many people talk about this, but kuala lumpur is actually a very easy city to cycle in, i have done it twice with my folding bike. it's easier with a folding bike as you can bring it into the lrt, folded of course. usefull tip - use 16" folding bike, it's more compact and easier to handle. by the way i'm from sarawak.
I agree. I used to live full time in KL and I cycled every morning, not so much downtown but in the smaller towns on the periphery. Now, as a tourist, I don't have a bike anymore so I walk a lot.
what about cycling on a road bike? Also, do people commute to office on bike in KL?
@@akshaypatil9663 Yes, there are a lot of people doing roadcycling in the weekend mornings, but not a single person I know or see, ever cycles to the office. You'd be brunt alive and drenched by the time you'd arrive (IF you arrive).

@@akshaypatil9663 some companies do have shower facilities, but mostly when manufacturing sites. Not the offices in the city.
I believe apart from Singapore, Malaysians speak the best English in that region, especially in cities like Penang, KL, Ipoh,Seremban
but , engliah not the first language in malaysia . but malay
FYI, the malay language can be written in 2 types of alphabet - tulisan rumi (roman script) & tulisan jawi (modified arabic script).

We have two legendary artistic persons. (1) P.Ramlee - actor, movie director, singer & composer. Even though he passed away some 50 yrs ago, his black&white movies and songs are still enjoyed by many people of different races (as long you understand Malay language) to this day (2) Lat - Cartoonist. He is still around. His cartoons depicts Malaysian life in the 60-70s via his Kampung Boy collection and Malaysian day to day life in the 80-90s. One can get his collection of cartoons in large bookstores such as at MPH.
After I did my video about P. Ramlee I have talked with several people about him. As far as Lat goes, I have seen many of his cartoons but not lately. Did he do the ones near Masjid Jamek at the junction of Jln. Malaka and Jln. Ampang? They look like his style.

I'm local,and live in small township of Muar by the river. To be honest, every young man and girl in Malaysia keen to learn english and other languages as well for the sake of knowledge. My family can speak english ,russian, javanese and korean. It is all fun you know¡!😊
In the U.S. we are surprised when anyone speaks more than one language. This is a major problem for us. When I came to work in Malaysia I was working with local people who spoke 3, sometimes 4 different languages. I realized how inadequate my language skills were.
Regardless of either one is in Muar,KL or wherever...English is a compulsory subject in all Malaysian schools from primary years (age 7-12) till secondary schools (age 13-17),not sure that equals to what/which schooling years in the States or any other countries.Only issue,may be,the proficiency level for those in the rural areas are a bit lower because,after school hours,back at home,one tend to just speak one's native language as for for the day to day life goes.
As for the big cities e.g. KL...unfamiliar tourist or foreigners might misunderstood that the English here is 'not that good' because most of the general working group/helpers/sellers/security guards/malls etc etc are mostly from the neighboring countries plus all the others from south asia region & so on.
In general,most Malaysian 'shall' be okay with English (of course dont expect em to sound like americans,aussie,brits etc etc 😅).

I think the reason why Malaysia is affordable is because most products and services are subsidized by oil funds. So long as this is maintained by the government, the pace of life will remain the same. I love KL, Penang, and Lankawi.
The economy is under pressure now for several reasons and the subsidies are making things worse. How long can the government maintain them? That's the real question. I notice several articles in the press about attempts to distribute subsidies directly to the B40, or whoever needs them, instead of just blanket application.

the effects of removing even a little bit of subsidy will be catastrophic on any ruling government here, no one dared to do it. More people are feeling that these subsidies becoming even more unsustainable with the current global economic climate. Honestly I dont know what to say about it but subsidies kept the people happy. Corruption is a huge problem in the country tho, current government vowed to eliminate this but frankly it sounded impossible@@InternationalBigshot
Without changes in the subsidies Malaysia will be subsidizing itself into economic disaster. I think you're right about the pressure on any government not to change anything though. I think that's what the new Padu scheme is supposed to address.@@mencot89
Cool weather is just 25 minutes drive from KL Many buses available .Go to Genting , affordable luxury. The rain is good as it cool off the temperature and cleanse the dust.

If visiting SE Asia it's easy to get to Singapore, KL, and Bangkok. Those places will give you a good perspective of what life is like in the area. KL is my favorite though and when I come back to Asia it is usually there.

KL/Malaysia is central of Asian and you can easily move around to the Asian countries with its Malaysia Airlines and its low cost airlines like Airasia, Malindo etc... Oct - Feb normally start of the monsoon season so more rain and flooding during the period...
Due to the weaker Ringgit than other regional currencies, Kuala Lumpur is relatively cheap; yet, locals find it increasingly pricey, particularly when they have to import products and must pay for them with the weaker Ringgit.
Exactly. When I started working in KL in 2013 the ringgit was at about 3.5 to the USD. It quickly went to 3.9 and has been inching upward ever since. As it write this it's between 4.6 and 4.7. When I worked here, earning ringgit, I was not happy about the its value. Now that I'm a tourist I see it differently. However, as you noted Malaysians are suffering because of the ringgit's weakness.
In an odd way, tourism is only adding to Malaysia's economic woes. Geographical arbitrage, especially with lodging (Airbnb, Vrbo, and hotels) is causing housing prices in the Klang Valley and a few other popular tourist destinations like Penang and KK to rise out of reach of local residents. Still Bank Negara reports what I think are unusually low inflation rates (2.5%) for the country. Something is wrong somewhere and I suspect that the true cost of subsidized items like petrol, sugar, cooking oil, and now rice are not part of this calculation. They should be. You cannot plan properly with incorrect data.
@@InternationalBigshot - You are absolutely right. You will have a more enjoyable vacation here if you are a traveller from the US, Europe, Australia, or even Singapore, our neighbour. But, for foreign workers who receive their salaries in Ringgit would experience the same hardships as locals. Because of our plateauing earnings, our purchasing power is declining. Like everyone else, Malaysians enjoy travelling, but these days we have to pick our destinations and make detailed travel plans. These days, even taking a domestic vacation is costly.
@@InternationalBigshotThat data is rigged. In smaller towns like mine, the hardship is getting real, old companies just closed with no new companies emerging. Unemployment is at its highest point. I don't see any effort from the government to tackle this issue, or even acknowledge this issue. Like you, I've also predicted KL will become just like any other busy soulless Metropolitan, the reason why I left it years ago when life became just about work and work and traffic jammed with little family times back then. And worst, it will eventually become like those cities with a lot of beggars and homeless people, and kids harassing people for money, if the gap between the rich amongst those in power and the lesser commoners keep increasing. Hopefully not in my lifetime haha
No such thing as unemployment increased. For me who really living in kl. there’s so many options of working. But yet I saw many people who actually very lazy to work. They actual lazy. Employed or not employed is really a choice

I'd like to add the accessibility/convenience for tourist in KL/Selangor is the integrated rail/light transit rail system. For just USD1 you can quickly travel to almost anywhere in KL/Selangor state(as many times as you like) for 24hours using the daily pass. Plus their stations are built in to major buildings like KLCC to easily access. Where else can you get these kind of service?
Ease of getting around is one of the real attractions of Kuala Lumpur. When I lived in Malaysia though it took me a while to learn the system and to truly appreciate how easy it was to get around without a car or by taxi or Grab.

It's certainly famous for food, but practically every TH-camr who ever set foot in KL makes a video about food. I think there are enough of those videos already. In fact, I've made a few of them myself and didn't want this one to be another. There are lots of reasons people like KL, food is just one of them.
Mr. Bigshot, I think the bridge is named the Saloma Link because it leads you to Jalan Saloma which is on the KLCC side of the Klang River. Also, "pintasan" actually means shortcut but is Anglicized as link probably because it sounds more formal.

@@InternationalBigshot yes the street is named after her and its leads to the bigger road Jalan P. Ramlee. Saloma's husband was of course the famous P. Ramlee. They were the power couple of their era.
If I was not mistaken late P.Ramli was buried at muslim cemetery in Gombak area. And late Saloma was buried at same cemetery too.
Most everyday I drive around KL and never get tired if the massive traffic.😊
There's cool weather in Malaysia at Highland areas such as Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands and Penang Hill. They're a couple less well known spots like Frasers Hill and Bukit Gurun with cooler weather and comfortable climate. 😊
I've been to Frasers Hill several times, on a bicycle. Once there was a 9 degree difference between the temp at KKB and the top. I stayed too long at the top and cooled of a little too much and was quite cold on the way down since all I did was sit on the bike and steer.
I am only waiting until this coming Wednesday. thats when I am arriving for my first visit!

International Bigshot 🤣🤣 Who says Americans aren't funny??? Seriously though, I visited KL about 4 years ago and had an absolute blast, I'll be back there again next year, mainly to escape the shitty English weather. I was pleasantly surprised (not sure why tbh) at how friendly the locals were.

I went to Penang years ago and then flew from there to Singapore before heading back to the U.S. Singapore was nice but in retrospect wish I had gone to KL with a side trip to Cameron Highlands. Hopefully can still make that trip.
I have also never been to Cameron Highlands but have had many people tell me it is definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately, it is small and very crowded, so the trick is to find a time to go when you're not there with a million other visitors.

In Asean, except the tiny Singapore, Malaysia is the wealthiest and cleanest country of all. Every cities are well designed in master plan and friendly to the environment which more parks and trees.

I live here... as a Malaysian I worry that KL is going to be underrated no longer... people come... tourist keep commenting on how cheap KL is... and the street vendor try to cater for what the tourists can pay.... rising costs of raw materials doesn't help due to world inflation...
You are completely right. One of the things I notice more than others is how Airbnb and Vrbo are causing housing costs in KL to rise. It's only small increases so far but if what has happened elsewhere happens here then pretty soon the local housing market will be priced out of reach for local residents. The tourism industry has changed and geographical arbitrage has been a great thing for travelers but not so good for local residents.

I live suburb of KL around 20 km southerly. This video is a really good explanation that every potential visitors must know.
Not only English speaking nation that I met along this time, but also a European who don't speak English.
One night, my friend and I often attracted to interact with other people from abroad. We were guessing where the lady originally from. Finally, she asked me for something, I helped her and I braved myself to ask.
Good thing I know few words like bueno notte and arrivederci.
Few days ago I stumbled upon another European in my neighborhood, carrying refillable empty bottles. Seems like he stays here for a bit longer. It was great that people around the world get to know more about Malaysia for right reasons. If not, they won't be here.
I lived and worked in Bandar Sri Damansara for 6 years (2013-2019) and know what you mean. During that time Kuala Lumpur became my favorite place. When I come now I'm just a tourist but knowing some of the local language and having several good friends here makes it a very nice place to come to.
@@InternationalBigshot Bandar Sri Damansara adjacent to Damansara Jaya the place I grew up. Lived there since 1978 until I moved to where I am now. That place you stayed was stunningly vibrant and good. Thank you.

One thing you forgot to mention is..
KL is the most underrated city in the entire world..Because it's sandwich like Oreos biscuits between Thailand in the North and Singapore in the South!!!

@@zmn07583cannot imagine when there are 15 million ppl living and work in KL. With the traffic congestions .. more bikes.. and the roads getting noisier with horns too. And air quality worsening.
And with millions of ppl living may cause the rents to go even higher.
We don't want ppl to live in square spaces like Hong Kong.
What KL is now is just fine.
I find Singapore and Bangkok to be typical 'big cities'. KL is big too but there is something about it that makes it feel different from Singapore or Bangkok. @@zmn07583
