Whoever said Doug Flutie couldn't play QB knows nothing about football.

I agree and then he went on to the NFL and made the Bills a playoff contender again.

I just heard them mention Ol' Darryl Mason. I worked with him when he was an assistant coach at Northwestern State, my Alma Mater.

Was there a plague back in 1985, like 2020. Lot's of empty seats.

rainy february day + no local tv blackout + fans of spring football being demoralized by announcement to move to the fall.

A football team owned by a future President with a future US Senator at running back. Awesome.

is it me? or does the referee look like he doesn't want to be there.

This was 1985. Refs in the USFL were criticized badly for their judgment calls. Also the league had announced that they were heading to the fall, so the final season was like going through the motions.

Unfortunately yes. The LA Express and San Antonio Gunslingers were perfect examples of it.

All the USFL nostalgia ignores that the ratings and attendance were never very good.

Really?? Their first year they met their average attendance goal per team of over 25K and the TV ratings were over 6.0 which their goal was five. The second year it dipped only slightly but the league was still popular. Where it all went wrong was during the off season before their third year when they announced they were moving to the fall. THAT'S where the attendance and ratings collapsed.
You must be an NFL mark because out of ALL the startup leagues that were launched (WFL, USFL, XFL, UFL, FXFL and every other wanna be), the USFL remains the ONLY league to have 3 complete seasons (18 games) along with playoffs and championships. NO team folded or moved during the three seasons.
The USFL had over 180 players make it into the NFL after the league folded. We brought you players like Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Reggie White, Herschel Walker, Bobby Hebert, Doug Flutie just to name a few. You're welcome!

yeah the usfl had potential , shit happens sometimes. They did a HELL of a lot better than future competitors to the NFL did but at the end of the day the beast remains and all we can say is "what if"

usfl forever were you involved with the league back in the day?

As someone who studies sports history for a living, the USFL was successful in the short run that it existed and would have continued to grow had their not been the attempt to move the USFL schedule from the Spring to the Fall to compete with the NFL. When they were unable to secure TV contracts with networks that already had them with the NFL, the USFL sued the NFL and won (a $3 dollar settlement - that's no typo). But without TV contracts, it could not survive. The league was destroyed by bad business decision making, not because of a lack of popularity.
