I like to drive cops crazy, I stop open my driver and passenger windows 1 inch, lock my doors and keep my finger on the lock button, I refuse to answer questions and tell them they are being recorded and I do not consent to any kind of search. When asked to roll the window down I just stare straight ahead and refuse to incriminate myself in any way. They are not my friends and had a choice to pull over many others doing exactly as I was doing and they chose me. I take my ticket and tell them be safe I will see them in court. The extortion part is when the judge asks if I brought a lawyer. Several times the judge advises me to just go pay the fine as the cop is there and the said judge says he always finds in favor of the cop. Extortion 101. Remember it's never about safety it's solely about collecting revenue.

In almost every state you are only required to display the necessary documents to law enforcement. Therefore, it's best to keep them in a clear plastic dolder and press them up against the window when the cop approaches. This way you can keep your door locked, the window rolled up enough that you can converse with the cop without giving him room to put his hands in your car . If you ARE asked to step out(Pennsylvania v. Mimms), it should only be if the officer believes you are a potential threat or he has probable cause that there are weapons in the vehicle. It's advisable to follow that direction, but take your keys with you and stand in view of the dashcam of the police car. This, in addition to your own cell phone recording should provide a good record of the stop for your safety and protecting your rights.

This is bad advice. First off counties do not issue registrations, States do. Police offers were polled on what they expect you to do in a traffic stop. Here’s their list: Put the car in Park, window down, turn off the car, turn on your four way flashers, put both hands on the wheel and wait for the officer. He will tell you what he wants. If you’re in their rifling around looking for insurance and registration before he even gets to you you’re signaling to him that you were doing something wrong and know why you’re being pulled over. He may also think you’re trying to hide something or maybe make him nervous over a potential weapon.
I followed these simple steps a year ago and he was very polite and I walked away with a warning. I had being driving “Too fast for conditions” (it was foggy) although technically not speeding. I agreed with him that maybe it was too fast, although I’m an excellent driver and have driven all over the planet in every conceivable condition. I’m also well aware of the stopping capabilities of my car even in fog. I happened to be in my 911 which may have also contributed to the stop. I didn’t argue and it was over in ten minutes. Also don’t get into an argument over the legalities of a traffic stop. Save that for court and let your lawyer argue the facts.

If they continue to ask questions just ignore them which you have the right to do.

Agree and Disagree. While I keep License, insurance card and Registration readily available in my car. This is all redundancy. In the state I live each one of these pieces of information is available to the police via their computer or dispatch. Granted, you should provide your License because it identifies you with your picture, but then again that information can be produced on their computer terminal along with any other pertinent information with someone giving their proper name and DOB. The license plates in our state displays whether the registration is current by a color code sticker, county and Month of expiration. Again redundancy. As an avid Police Scanner listener, either the computer terminal or dispatch can tell the officer any information of those three items. When listening to dispatch, they will let the officer know if the license is valid, and all exceptions. They let them know if the insurance and registration is valid.
Thanks for the education and the story and I agree the faster you can get them away from you and your car the better.

Depending on your state's laws or if you just abide by the 4th amendment, you do not have to give them your documents. You only have to present it to them. The 4th amendment says you don't even have to do that. They do have a right to get a search warrant to search me or my property for my documents. Not that they follow the law or the constitution, but they should.

Best thing to do is put both hands on top of the wheel and wait for the officer to come up to your window and ask for the documents. Tell the officer where they are and ask if you can reach for them. Digging around the inside of your car as the officer is approaching you makes them nervous because they can’t be sure what you’re digging for.
