    • @gregortheoverlander4122
      @gregortheoverlander4122 5 ปีที่แล้ว +138

      @@aka626 IBJJF rules have a point scoring system.
      Taking and maintaining dominate positions is enough to win a fight. You also get points for attempted, but failed submissions. The points are as follows.
      4 points - Rear mount/ Take the back
      4 points - Mount
      3 points - Passing the guard
      2 points - Knee-on-belly
      2 points - Sweep (from guard)
      2 points - Takedown
      This is a submission or draw fight. No points or scoring system. The only reward for taking a dominate position is that you now have a dominate position which makes submissions more likely for you and less likely for your opponent.
      The only way to win is to submit your opponent.
      In IBJJF it can be a smart move to just maintain a mount or back take for the entire duration of the match once you've obtained one. You don't attack you just stay on the back which can make it near impossible for the person on bottom to get out, but the person on top isn't really DOING anything. It's super boring.
      This rule set rewards action and discourages inaction.

      @@liamdillon7062 I get what you are saying some guys do play it safe with the grappling and the crowd responds the same way as the dudes who play it safe in striking.The thing is if a guy is just laying on another guy most of the time I blame the guy getting laid on. In wrestling after a round you get to chose top, bottom or neutral. Most wrestlers chose bottom so they can get up and get a point. Its easier getting up from bottom then it is to hold a guy down for a whole round so that is why I tend to blame the bottom guy. For example I thought Douglas Lima could have beaten Rory if he would have used the butter fly guard to escape but he just chilled in guard and hoped for submissions.

      Grappling is great but in places like Hawaii, it's a cultural thing to stand up fights when one person has a clear advantage over the other. The fights are reffed by the spectators. And will allow some ground & pound/opportunity for a finish by submission but for the most part, fights are quickly stood up. People in Hawaii are well versed in MMA and don't turn a blind eye to JJ and wrestling but striking is more entertaining and fair, both have the chance to finish it, even if there's a difference in standup skill. Simply put, just because somebody prefers a dog fight, doesn't mean that they're "mainstream viewers."

    • @taylorhetherington745
      @taylorhetherington745 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Grappling to those who understand it (admittedly I'm new to it) is much more entertaining than stand up fighting, it's makes the fighter use the brain more than kicking and punching. It's much more mentally engaging than stand up fighting.

    • @nachkommevongraf4734
      @nachkommevongraf4734 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@taylorhetherington745 Can I ask how much experience you have striking? please don't lie because believe it or not, it gets extremely prestigeous, especially at high levels. You said you are new to grappling, so I assume your interest in grappling is spiked for the time being. When I first got into fighting, I couldn't help but study every aspect of everything about it and my heart would race just thinking about it, I thought it was art and the possibilities were endless and although I still do, after years have passed I find it hard to have the same interest and put in the same amount of effort to examine the sport and rather just practice what I know. Striking, to the objective eye, is more entertaining and you can't dispute it isn't because the history of PPV #s say otherwise. You can't let your interest for grappling blind you from reality. It's great you're interested in grappling though, I assume it's because some of the current world champions in almost every promotion are world class wrestlers.

    • @goodbadluck5486
      @goodbadluck5486 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Striking is developed as a 'cultural thing' because what has been around for longer... Hitting someone with your fist, or arm-bars, triangle chokes , etc, etc, etc. Take from that what you will but the variables that can happen standing up or grappling are limitless and I don't wish to take away from either. But either way the point isn't culture..... It's anatomy against anatomy. When it comes to that I'd say everyone for whatever reason in their life has been punched, but i'd also say a minuscule percent of that in comparison have been moved around like a toy on the ground , made themselves look like an absolute fool. They can't relate and when they watch fighting are calling some of the greatest plays happening before their eyes 'humping'.
