KTM beating the others on paper, but with their reliability issues and parts being on back order so much. You'd be better off going with any other Supermoto.
That stunt rider was whipping the bike around pretty sick. I doubt you have much issues with the 390 but parts are always hard to come by with KTM. It took me a couple of months to get a side plastic. You can't beat $5499., that is $1100 cheaper than a KLX300sm but with double the power! And still has more power then the new DRZ400sm but $1700 cheaper!
I have a 1290 SDR and it hasn't given me any problems... I think that as long as it's made in Austria you'll see a difference in quality compared to those made in China or India.
The 390s don't have a lot of reliability issues man. The bigger ones have had some history but even with those, there are people claiming its overblown.
At this point this had become an echo chamber. It's not that KTM overall is unreliable and all their models will have issues. Just some specific engines had issues, which were already fixed. The 390 platform is as polished as anything else from any other decent brand.
I'm not worried about the reliability of any KTM 390 bike. That engine got the KTM secret refresh years ago and has been reliable since. I do worry about KTMs financial situation. This new KTM 390 SMC R is a hell of a deal at $5499 for the power and features you get, I'm sure the reliability will be just fine, like you said the 390 is pretty solid.
@CycleCruza i was excited for the new 400s, and then they unveiled them. FI and a 6 speed is all we were asking for. As for KTM, when they hit the mark, it's glorious. If I were in the market for a long service interval sumo, this would be at the top of my list.
Love that 390 motor. I put 10k miles on my little RC in 2 years with no issues..gonna be a dope SM! Wish those folks at KTM handling the books were as smart as those making bikes.
I don't have an issue with my MT-07 or YZ450FX's 2.2 gal fuel tank for urban riding. The 390 is not a bike you are going to tour on anyways, not a big deal. I bet some of the weight can be shed as well.
It must be that heavy because of the regulations in Europe with the A2 licence. there is a limitation with the power to weight ratio. A2 licence qualifying motorcycles can still only have a maximum power output of up to 35kW (46.6hp) as well as a power to weight ratio of 0.2kW per kg
it will be so much better than the zook, as is out and out a sm in 390 form - gonna be kick ass - the zook will be a half arsed attempt like the old version , cool bike but not a competitor - as for the ktm engine, that is a solid proven platform so no need to worry - KTM are fine by the way, all is going well in the restructuring
I'll go Japanese all day. The extra couple of hp over the drz400 just isnt worth it. You'll spend that 1700 in repairs on the ktm before you will on thr drz. Or just get a used drz400sm for way less then a new 390
People in comments talking about reliability of the smaller ktms without having a clue of how reliable these smaller bikes actually are. I own a 2019 390 duke and a 2022 svartpilen 250, here in India these are pretty reliable i havent had a single issue on my ktm which is why i bought the svartpilen 250 and even that has proved reliable. These smaller ktms are made by bajaj and bajaj makes reliable bikes (unlike the chinese cf moto) they now make triumph 400 series of bikes as well. Many years ago kawasaki had tie up with bajaj to provide sales and service for their bikes.
I do love the 390 platform. One of the bikes I own is a 2023 390 Duke which is the most fun I've had with a bike in some time. Also love Bajaj and owned some of their bikes. However I don't think cfmoto is the problem in that case, as when they actually too over QC for KTM most of the 790 platform issues were sorted. The issue, contrary to popular belief, is Austrian made components and trying to force the idea that chinese equals bad and european means good. Both India and China are in a much better position to build bikes than Austria, and mostly any other country at this point.
Sold my RC390 last year. Loved it just not enough to keep it. This though and that price is about just right. I don't mind the weight. My cruiser weighs 700lbs so anything else feels like a feather. The 390 engine is so punchy and fun it made more than enough power to even hit the interstate without a flaw. Was thinking about getting another smallish bike for kicks and this is a Sumo which is something I've never had. If I can pull the front end up on the z900RS Cafe this is gonna feel like a breeze.
Listened to all my friends, drank the juice and bought a brand new KTM this past year. Was at the dealer 2x within the first month with issues (oil leaking from output shaft, and then cruise control stopped working). Sold the bike at a massive loss, and will never purchase another KTM again. Not impressed at all.
The new Suzuki is the DR-Z4SM not DRZ400SM... Until the Suzuki and KTM are able to be reviewed hands on...no one knows anything just going by paper specs.
Suzuki reputation is solid. Suzuki press-release has a good deal of information on it that people are inept to read (evidently). Suzuki electrics will be reliable. Japan uses ECU that have flashing support (Woolich and others) unlike KTM's use of Bosch. Suzuki is a known quantity and KTM is a known crap shoot.
I don't really know anything about KTM, except for what I've read and heard. Personally, I'm not willing to spend my money on a brand that's known for reliability issues. I will just stick to Yamaha and Honda. 😂
Well, they are also known for making awesome bikes overall. And as you said, you don't know anything about the brand other than the echo chamber tat seems to be media outlets and random comments. The reality is that just some specific models were a bit problematic as some point, and most of that was quickly sorted. Yes, overall they are a bit more problematic than Honda and Yamaha, but it's not like buying those you are safe and getting a KTM things will definitely go bad 9 out of 10 times.
It's really not a enduro bike, it has a naked bike frame not a dirtbike frame.. you don't want a rock of something breaking the engine. Also has 17 inch rims for street tires, not the 21 front 18 back that you need to go over stuff. a dual sport would be better like a crf450rl, more power, lighter, alot more capable offroad with fully adjustable showa suspention with Pro-link in the back... but it's 2 times the price of this one so yeah.
@balinoob1837 appreciate the info yeah I got to forget there's dual sport I'm 51 so I'm kind of old school anything that's dirt bike looking to me if it's on the street it's an Enduro lol but yeah I'm really looking forward to picking up something of that nature this summer going to get one of the lighter ones I think I dated a girl that had one and i thought it was really cool easy to handle super fun
You'll love supermotos, they are proper hooligan street machines and you can still go off-road and mess around a bit too like I do with Shinko 705 DS tubeless tires on the 17" supermoto wheels..
@CycleCruza appreciate the info yeah I run my own pool company so right now I'm in the slow season still working hard but I'm not wigger rich 🤑 like I am in the summer that's when I buy my big items and I'm from Memphis baby born and raised think I've told you this before but I was in Cincinnati and Newport area for about a year I was a manager at the good old car x in the hood every now and then I got to go to the store next to fairgrounds in Cincinnati which I considered a good area by my standards
I’m sure it will be a short highway use for most riders. My husky 701sm kinda sucks on the highway at 80 mph. It’s lightweight, tall, and no wind protection.
I'll stick with with the 04 SMC625 at 291 pounds, it was that light for the 1st year only. Visceral power, with zero rider aids. The SMC has been as reliable as my 2000 DRZ400S, no issue with either bike, so far.
My YZ450FX supermoto is sublime, most fun motorcycle I've ever owned in my life. Super lightweight and a torquey as hell. I take mine into the woods a little to mess around too with my Shinko 705 DS tubeless tires.
@@smiffy9624 His YZ is a proper supermoto. These bikes are not in the same league, never mind basically the same. Most people that want a supermoto know and accept before hand they are getting into a high maintenance bike/engine and they own other bikes.
Man I think that extra weight will help with road highway riding . I have a beta 500rrs and it is super sketchy on highways being so light . I’ve been tuning my suspension playing with tire pressure but think it comes down to bike weight . Look forward to riding one of these. Thanks for sharing
My YZ450FX is awesome on the highway and it only weighs 265 lbs. I never understand why some riders say they have a problem with lighterwight bikes on the highway. You should be able to reduce some of that weight on the 390 SMC R such as a new exhaust, ditch the ugly stock fender, etc. Overall, you can't beat it for the price vs performance. From my understanding the 390 is pretty reliable as well.
@@CycleCruza A light bike on the freeway on a windy day is no fun after a few hours. I rather have a heavier bike almost always. The reason I sold my Triumph Daytona is because it was too light. Other than that it was a perfect bike.
DRZ is still way lighter. Better for hoonigan riding but the KTM might be better for SM racing top end power. Good to see another small cc supermoto out there but KTM needs to get the quality under control and out of china!
I love KTM bikes. I need me a 390 duke for the street the SM390 is good real fun bike to buy as a project bike and keep and just have fun on and tech it has also quite impressive for price
This new 390 sumo is a hell of a deal, I bet you can get it for even cheaper seeing as how KTM is desperate to unload inventory quickly. If I were buying it I would try to get it for 5k OTD.
Legit specs, I’d have to wait for the Husqvarna version. I can’t deal with KTM’s styling. Regarding KTM’s financial situation, Bajaj should just buy another percentage point of KTm, giving them control of the company. Bajaj is already makes all of the 390’s for KTM, and already owns almost 50% of the company.
I bet the 390 would be cool for small roads and townships. But it would never hold up to the open desert roads we have here in Nevada. Cruzer grab one of those and show us what it can do... :)
It is definitely a urban hooligan supermoto, just look at the way that rider is throwing that bike around and whipping up wheelies effortlessly out of a stoppie. A hell of a deal for this new 390 sumo.
If you can work on your own stuff ride a KTM make my day. I just like to ride and not waste money. So i went with Yam and Honda last year. I;ve already forgot what the dealer 's look like of course, parts? I got parts when i bought the bikes and guess what, they all still work...lol
Meh. Suzuki DR-Z4SM for the win. Rather be riding than fixing. Rather have an ECU that can be flashed (unlike KTM Bosch). Rather have Japanese electrics.
I think the bike is so heavy cause in the EU alot of smaller bikes need to have a certain weight to power ratio to be abel to be driven with the small driving licens
So in my opinion the big problem for KTM is that they do not have any dealerships. As a previous 690 smcr owner. I can tell you. It's a headache. I have two KTM dirt bike dealers near me, they wont touch it. I had to ask one of them if they can order a oil change kit for the 690 thankfully they did and kept it stocked for me and others. The only dealership that will touch the smcr for me is 2hrs away. And they suck. I brought my 690 there for the valve service and they messed my bike up, i will NEVER go there again! So Where does that leave me? With another brand. I want a KTM RC990 or 890adv but i cant. Because where will go to get it? And whos servicing it!? KTM is the shit i love KTM but they need more knowledgeable dealerships. And why is KTM dirtbikes and street bikes a different "company" thats crazy.
Because it looks like they just basically made a supermoto out of the 390 Duke. It isn't a fresh from scratch supermoto/dual sport like the 690 SMC R/Enduro R.
It weighs a little less than my duke 390 with smaller tank which I don’t like. More Hp than the other 2 bikes you mentioned simply because the torque comes up higher in rev range which is not good for this type of moto. I feel low torque in lower RPMs in my duke version which I hate. It’s rattly and weak under 4k rpm.
They tuned this 390 SMC R with my bottom end grunt. Just look at that dude effortlessly bust wheelies off of a stoppie. $5499 is a hell of a deal, much better bang for your buck than KLX300sm.
I doubt it, the 390 is pretty solid from what I hear. The engine is the same as the 390 Duke, a street engine so the maintenance has long intervals not in hours like my YZ450FX supermoto conversion.
@@nickbazan27 i would suggest you to look at the reliability of bikes made by Bajaj in India. This includes all smaller KTMs till the 390. They are as reliable as a japanese motorcycle. The camshaft issues and electrical niggles are on bikes made by cf moto in china.
Wheres it made? I just have a hard time spending money on something from a company like ktm. Suzuki has plants all over and I believe five locations in japan
@@alphacapo in India its made by bajaj. And here in India ktms are pretty reliable. I own a 2019 390 duke and a 2022 svartpilen 250. I havent had any issues with both of them. Both are made by Bajaj.

Nope, Japanese all day!
@@exothermal.sprocket Agree
They are not able to make it much lighter because they want it to be A2 license compliant in Europe. Sucks but it is what it is.
Is their a minimum weight requirement for A2 license? Sounds rediculous to me. But, then again, Euro-globalists are reduculous.
Hey for 5k it looks like it would be a blast!!
That's is what I'm saying. I bet you can probably get it even cheaper with KTM being desperate to sell bikes asap.

How can it be heavier than the 690. Have you made a mistake?
It will sell well, I’m quite sure. If pricing is not too far off the Japs model.
Man I love those style bikes I've always been an Enduro fan I'm going to try to pick me one up this summer
I found out that ktm have install a memory function. So when you turn off the bike, it's supposed to remember your previous settings.
I'm getting one, I've been waiting for years for this
It sound good but how is this bike going to be in the highway?
I’m sure it will be a short highway use for most riders. My husky 701sm kinda sucks on the highway at 80 mph. It’s lightweight, tall, and no wind protection.
I'll stick with with the 04 SMC625 at 291 pounds, it was that light for the 1st year only. Visceral power, with zero rider aids. The SMC has been as reliable as my 2000 DRZ400S, no issue with either bike, so far.
Honestly I think a 450 supermoto is the way to go especially if you’re never going to throw knobbies on and take it on the trails or woods.
People ain’t got the time or patience for maintenance this is nimble and easy this is why they made the smc r line
My YZ450FX supermoto is sublime, most fun motorcycle I've ever owned in my life. Super lightweight and a torquey as hell. I take mine into the woods a little to mess around too with my Shinko 705 DS tubeless tires.
@@CycleCruza so basically the same as what they have just bought out without the high maintenance 😌
@@smiffy9624 His YZ is a proper supermoto. These bikes are not in the same league, never mind basically the same. Most people that want a supermoto know and accept before hand they are getting into a high maintenance bike/engine and they own other bikes.
@ think your missing what I’m saying completely and I don’t need informing what a supermoto is when it’s all I ride but thanks ☺️
I need me a 390 duke for the street the SM390 is good real fun bike to buy as a project bike and keep and just have fun on and tech it has also quite impressive for price
kawaski KLX 300sm, triumph scrambler 400x, or this new ktm?? decisions decisions
This new 390 sumo is a hell of a deal, I bet you can get it for even cheaper seeing as how KTM is desperate to unload inventory quickly. If I were buying it I would try to get it for 5k OTD.
I would go for the new Suzuki. Super Moto really doesn't need a lot of hp to be fun. IMHO 😮😮😮
160kg is alright no?
Legit specs, I’d have to wait for the Husqvarna version. I can’t deal with KTM’s styling.
Regarding KTM’s financial situation, Bajaj should just buy another percentage point of KTm, giving them control of the company. Bajaj is already makes all of the 390’s for KTM, and already owns almost 50% of the company.
Well I can read a spec sheet, post something when you can get a chance to ride one.
I would not rely on his experience.......
i'd get the DR, looks better with suzuki reliability and 37 vs 44 hp makes no difference to me
Suzuki reliability is the same untrustable like ktm for most bikes lol, gixxer is an exception
@@gabrielsebastian8444 facts beat your opinion.
DRZ is one of the most reliable bikes on the planet.
Suzuki all day.
I can't watch this until later. But I will say that new KTM supermoto 125 SMCR looks amazing
This 390 is a hell of a deal. Check the video out when you get a chance, the stunt rider throws this lil bike around effortlessly. Looks so fun!
I would buy that KTM with my own money.
It looks like is going to be a great bike. Hopefully the quality is good.
Great bang for your buck, $5499 is dirt cheap for any motorcycle let alone a supermoto with this power and features.
Suzuki: know quality is good
KTM: hope quality is good
KTM = know thanks man.
Buy it for the testing then sell it
I know this is dumb but the fact it doesn't have a downtube to protect the engine is why I dont like it lol
Protect the engine from what?
@jakeviolet2195 if you do any off-roading the first log or rock you bash your pipe and engine
The 390 SMC-R , Enduro R, and ADV R will save KTM. They're going to sell like hotcakes.
And the upcoming 690 Adventure.
@@JinKazama92 interesting, I haven't heard of that new model. 690 platform is nearly double the price so tough sell in these economic times.
A hell of a deal for this new 390 sumo.
hoping yamaha offer a 350-400cc supermoto/DS
If you can work on your own stuff ride a KTM make my day. I just like to ride and not waste money. So i went with Yam and Honda last year. I;ve already forgot what the dealer 's look like of course, parts? I got parts when i bought the bikes and guess what, they all still work...lol
Meh.
Suzuki DR-Z4SM for the win. Rather be riding than fixing. Rather have an ECU that can be flashed (unlike KTM Bosch). Rather have Japanese electrics.
Cc you should chop in your 690 and get the 390 instead and have some on and off road fun.
You are saying drz400 all the time, and mentioning price. While showing the new 2025 dr-z4sm, which has no price from suzuki yet.
get the drz 10000000%
*NEW VIDEO: THE WORST USED MOTORCYCLES! AVOID Buying These!(See Video!):*
th-cam.com/video/EQy6dHcWd8M/w-d-xo.html
Get one CC. Do a 2 stroke supermoto cc. I have 3 supermoto's right now. A cr250r supermoto is next.
I think the bike is so heavy cause in the EU alot of smaller bikes need to have a certain weight to power ratio to be abel to be driven with the small driving licens
The Suzuki DRZ400 SM doesn't come in yellow. Can you believe these fools?
And why is KTM dirtbikes and street bikes a different "company" thats crazy.
still riding wr250x headache free
On a tight track pretty sure i could smoke a 690 on the 390
I wanna try it
How could it be so damn heavy? Wtf
Because it looks like they just basically made a supermoto out of the 390 Duke. It isn't a fresh from scratch supermoto/dual sport like the 690 SMC R/Enduro R.
@@CycleCruza hmm it is pretty reasonably priced compared to the 450 KTM as well!
You weight weenies are worse than Harley Davidson diehards.
Same weight as incoming DRZ at half the reliability. Nah .
I understand 690 but this is a nah for me dawg
Cfmoto already owns the controlling share of KTM
154 kg dry, high af gas tank, underbelly exhaust with no rear fairing, bunch of electronic, made in India. No thanks, I want a raw fun supermoto.
If you could hot-rod the klx300sm...that would be the bike!
Hot rod a 300. Or just go with a 400 Suzuki.
$5499 is a hell of a deal, much better bang for your buck than KLX300sm.
will it break after 10 hrs 😂
I doubt it, the 390 is pretty solid from what I hear. The engine is the same as the 390 Duke, a street engine so the maintenance has long intervals not in hours like my YZ450FX supermoto conversion.
@CycleCruza yeah - not like KTM has had issues with camshafts recently or anything Lmao.
@@nickbazan27 i would suggest you to look at the reliability of bikes made by Bajaj in India. This includes all smaller KTMs till the 390. They are as reliable as a japanese motorcycle. The camshaft issues and electrical niggles are on bikes made by cf moto in china.
@@shonith91 KTM = Kick Till Midnight LMAOOO.
1290 Vtwin has been solid too. Meanwhile, KTM electronics suck. KTM brakes have caused crashes. KTM buy-in electronics suck.
Wheres it made? I just have a hard time spending money on something from a company like ktm. Suzuki has plants all over and I believe five locations in japan
India.
@@alphacapo in India its made by bajaj. And here in India ktms are pretty reliable. I own a 2019 390 duke and a 2022 svartpilen 250. I havent had any issues with both of them. Both are made by Bajaj.
yea you know some one will pick up ktm. it would be their reliability and part availability that would be an issue for me.
ATGATT
So far no problems wit my KTM, knock on wood but I'm selling mine because I don't need two supermotos and love my YZ450FX supermoto the most.
