Thanks brutha! Just got my first drift boat and I’m excited to hit the rivers on the Kenai Peninsula! Kenai is closed at during the king season but I’ll be hittin the Kasilof regularly!!!
My carbon smoker blades just got messed up by launching outta my cousins truck... gonna try this. Some delamination occured, gonna sand the loose stuff off and apply urathane!
Awesome vid - instructional and entertaining! I bought a new pair of canoe paddles and someone took them. So I refinished my old ones in a "Hello Kitty" motif. So far, nobody's wanted to steal them.
How did the refinishing hold up over the last several months? As a rafter primarily, fisherman secondarily (who uses their oars a ton between both worlds), I don't think you're doing it wrong. But if I did this myself, without watching your video, it would have been massively more complicated. So you are right.
So, I got my oars used and pretty beat up. Realistically, how much of the old varnish do I need to remove? I don't need them perfect lol. There are just some big gouges and deep spots. Do I need to go with heavy grain sandpaper before the red scotch guard...or just get them smooth with the scotch guard and call it good? TIA!
@@Wy.ty.onthefly Oh 1 can will do 4-6 coats I would think. Didn’t use the entire can! Good luck. Just make sure you get even smooth spray and let it dry an hour or so between. Cheers.
Thanks from a fan from somewhere other than your home state but who currently resides there. I resisted watching this. WTF does it have to do with me? Then I realized I have a “push pole” on my 13’ Whaler that is used to push off rocks. You know? Where the rockfish are? I vaguely remember that they were there. I think I might remember that. I might find out if we’re ever allowed to fish again. I moved to MD from NJ for fly fishing for striped bass. Seems you were ahead of the Huge fly fisherman curve. I’ve got another Stay In Place project thanks to you. Thanks.
Has anyone ever mentioned that you look a bit like another TH-cam fly fisher named Captain Quinn? You both have beards, you both are comedic, you both do "How to" videos, and you are both full of yourselves.
Great video! Muchos Gracias Ben 🙏👌

Thanks for sharing this topic. You mentioned counterbalancing oars. Any recommendations on how to counterbalance?
In short; take the blade out, take the foam plug out, add lead shot, add fiberglass resin. There are some nuances.

I approve of these tactics!
Awesome ! Finally got the blades best boat purchase yet.
Are shoal cut oar blades really that much better for fishing than standard blades?
Personal preference, but I like them a lot. I’ll never go back to square blades.
I agree. Shoal cuts are the light

Ben where do you guide? Your vids are great.

Light prep, heavy spar varnish.
Thank you so much! Heavy...like 4 or 5 coats?
At least 3
How many cans did it take to get 3 coats?

Quality face plant.

Thanks.
The end of that was 😂 hilarious! Well done content too. And yes I had a handful of fiberglass splinters and it’s no fun!
Thanks Bob!
Nice, fishing and the poor kid does a face plant. Thanks Dad.
I was confident the paco pad wouldn’t injure him. Risky, though.
Love the fiberglass splinters, friends love them too!
Great vid, thanks! How about a video on counterbalancing oars?
I would love to see how you counter weight your oars.
Nice
Well that was like watching paint dry. 😉
Clever, JJ. Very clever.
Awesome!
The Junior face plant must be an inherited gene form his fathers side of the family...
By far the best part of the video. More of Jr. Please.
I'm gonna try it on my truck. Spray the paint on when its tacky. I aint sandin nottin!
I've done that same move at the end in my canoe
Oar you sure it's that easy?
My IQ is lowered. Not from watching this of course, but from not wearing a safety masking and inhaling fumes while trying to do this myself.

No but I like his videos. And yes.
Actually, he’s way more humble than me. Seems like a good dude.
