@@fleatactical7390 Friendship is not a one-way street. Canada has always had America's back. From the taking-in of 33,000 stranded Americans on 9/11, major disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina, secretly orchestrating the escape of six American diplomats during the Iranian hostage crisis of '79, and even sending water-bombers to California just a few weeks ago, Canada has always been a true neighbour to our American cousins. We also answered the call when America invoked Article 5, and spent billions of dollars fighting in Afghanistan, where many Canadians fought, bled, and died. All we've ever asked for in return for being good neighbours is a fair trading relationship and to be treated as equal partners. As thanks, the new US President just this week threatened us with annexation. Whether it be by 'economic force' or otherwise, that is not some mild threat. That is nothing short of a knife in the back. He has threatened our sovereignty and our freedom. Anyone surprised by Canadians booing the US anthem right now needs to give their head a shake. You'd absolutely be booing ours if our head of state threatened your sovereignty and freedoms. We're a peaceful people, but don't mistake our politeness for weakness. Canadians have never tied the National Anthem to honoring military service. We see it as a patriotic element of the nation and so we are happy to share in our neighbor's love of their nation with our own rendition when necessary just as we sing our own. As such, if it's about honoring the nation, booing is about denouncing the nation. Most of the time, booing at games is booing the anthem as a stand in for the other team and that is stupid and wrong - regardless of rivalries, denouncing a nation because their team happens to be playing games is utterly poor. But this is a correct representation.
The French version of Oh Canada is both more and less appropriate somehow. O Canada! Land of our ancestors Glorious deeds circle your brow For your arm knows how to wield the sword Your arm knows how to carry the cross; Your history is an epic Of brilliant deeds And your valor steeped in faith Will protect our homes and our rights.
We have always tied the National anthem to honouring military service; it’s honouring our country as a whole and our history including our freedoms/rights that we enjoy due to things like our military actions in the past. That said, yes this has nothing to do with booing the anyone other than Trump government.
Drugs are bad. Open borders in America is leading to big threats. Negotiation tactics were deployed and most people are smart enough to know that. Doing anything to save the lives of 200,000 Americans who are dying of Fentanyl overdoses is good. Sadly border security needed to become a immediate fix here in the United States. Know terrorists entering the country at both borders and it needed to end. Ultimately the US and Canadian relationships will just become stronger. If anyone thinks that the US is trying to bully Canada for anything unjust are being intellectually dishonest. Americans love Canada hence the whole 51st state jabs. We protect you so you don't need to have a military budget and get free healthcare instead while we defend N America.
Bro, as an American, the entire world should be booing us 24/7. A lot of us are booing with you guys. What our president and his goons are trying to pull on our neighbors is shameful
I'm here to remind you that the players on whatever shitty American hockey team you root for don't care, either,as they're only "American" in terms of where they play, and composed of Canadian, Russian, Finnish, Swedish and Czech players. Whatever shitty baseball team you root for is mostly Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican and Venezuelan players
Well Canada agreed to the entire list of American requests to strengthen the boarder and stop illegal crossings so far. I doubt anyone has much to worry about. Sometimes you just gotta yell at your brother to really get their attention.
I'm all for booing at hockey games, and any sports games in general (It's happening at Toronto Raptors games too). Canadians are upset, and rightfully so, and we only have so many ways to express that frustration. While buying Canadian and avoiding travel to the US are things people are doing that will make a difference, this is a way to be seen and truly make your voice heard, and I feel it's good to take that. Given everything going on, and quite frankly the betrayal coming from the White House, frustration towards the American government seems warranted. I don't think the booing should be seen as a statement against America as a whole, but like you said, a message to the American government that we don't want to be your "51st state", and that's an important message to send. True North Strong and Free, go Canada! - A proud Canadian
As an American, I think Canadians expressing their outrage is wholly warranted and reasonable and I am ashamed that more Americans aren't taking a similar stance. Canada does not deserve to be treated this way.
So Mr.Proud Canadien, If at some point things got bad enough, would you consider taking in Alaska as an act of charity? Sincerely, Concerned American thinking Canada’s problems are looking really good by comparison.
When relations are good Canadians sing along or boo depending on the situation. It's about the game. This is about the current political situation, not the game. It's not a slight on the people in the stands, or on the ice. It's aimed entirely at the government. I found the booing of the Canadian anthem at the Nashville game silly (not being hypocritical, they can boo all they want) considering Canada hasn't done anything to America, but it was just a few people. I think the vast majority of Canadians and Americans can understand why this is happening. It's not rocket science, we're scared, anxious and pissed off and we as a people don't have any direct platform to America. Especially with how American media has been handling the topic (several "interviews" with Canadians about their feelings on the tariffs had comically loaded questions).
Many in America don’t see it that way. I think it’s getting to the wrong audience, I don’t think anybody in the White House is watching the NHL but there are a lot of people at home or at games saying “I didn’t do anything to deserve this”
@milesbowen9433 we won't know until and unless comprehensive polling is done. Anecdotally I've seen vastly more support or indifference than opposition
My feelings are pretty mixed. I think it was a massive jerk move for Trump and America to pull, but also, by letting Justin do his thing and continue embarrassing Canada at every opportunity, we kind of had it coming. Jerk move, but it was a little slash before the puck drop, telling the opposing player to cut it out. Do we keep on playing? Do we drop the gloves? Or do we rat up and lick the guy? The anxiety is meaningless, since ANY president could have done this, and any future president can as well. We need to build our own economy to support ourselves and trade more with others, and the threat of tariffs exposed that. Let's not forget that.
We had it coming? Do you hear yourself? You might as well be advocating for us to start building nuclear weapons because "any future president" could invand/annex us like Trump is also threatening to do. Just a truly awful take. We're allies. You don't expect or plan for this treatemnet from your closest ally just like you don't plan or expect to get invaded or annexed.
I'm with you on this take. Trade disputes have always been a threat and while Trump is taking it to an extreme, it's happened plenty of times in the past too. So the fact we were so off guard or not prepared is also a failure on the Canadian government as well. Canada being so reliant on the US is and was never a good strategic situation to be in as a country. So I'm glad there's conversations again about "buying local" or being less dependent on the US. Sure it's not an ideal situation to be in, but hopefully it can result in a renewed sense of national pride and self reliance. (Also hopefully the tariffs won't actually be placed.)
@@noahj.1232 it was less than a decade ago we tried to have plans to be more self reliant in Canada in case of future trade disputes like this. That was part of the idea behind oil pipeline proposals like the Energy East pipeline that way we'd have a pipeline that goes from Alberta to New Brunswick so we wouldn't be dependent on the US. It also would have been a great bargaining chip if the US tried anything we deemed unfair in regards to trade. Trump is of course way out of line, that doesn't change the fact trade disputes are always a possibility and Canada being in a stronger position to be in is better than simply hoping the US just treats us nice.
@@shakenbacon3655 Yes, it’s good to be self reliant, but to be able to remotely predict or expect or plan for blanket 25% tariffs with almost no notice from your largest trading partner is so unbelievably unrealistic in this geopolitical environment-talking about this as if there’s “blame to go around” or “Canada really should have seen this coming” is just insane. There’s a reason people are saying this is undermining 80 years of American diplomacy. While saying Canada should have been more self reliant does appear reasonable at first glance, with a better understanding of the scales and historical relationships involved, it really is pretty analogous to saying, “Canada really should have built up their military more” upon a comparably unprovoked US invasion.
@@shakenbacon3655 it’s the scale and abruptness and betrayal and bilateral irrationality of a trade war (combined with the annexation rhetoric) that make this beyond anything Canadian policy could have reasonably planned for given the last several decades
Well said. The fact that all it took was saying, "we'll do the things we already have in motion" and the tariffs got dropped pretty much tells you how dumb they were to begin with.

Im Canadian and I love America and everything it stands for, always considered them our big brother so it really sucks that this is happening. The game wouldn’t be nearly as big as it is without American money and involvement and I hope we can come together again soon.
I think both are definitely in the wrong. It wasn't fair for Canada to boo America's anthem. It isn't fair that America boo'd Canada's anthem. We as fans of hockey have to separate our political views and opinions from the game. I thought the same thing when Russia and Ukraine went to war and the NHL had talks and even banned some players from playing or returning home. I believe the hockey community is one of the strongest in sports and this one kinda hurts. I hate seeing this as an American. I love my country, I love our shared history between our nations. So for me personally, I hate that this is driving a division between us fans of a sport we all hold dear.
I think it's impossible to separate sports and politics because sports have been political since their conception. I understand if someone doesn't want to engage in the inherent political side of sports and I personally don't really do that, but I won't dig my head in the sand and say sports aren't political, when thats a factually false statement
No actual tariffs have been enacted, a deal was reached Monday. In exchange for Canada using their budget to strengthen the US/Canada border the enaction of the tax has been delayed for thirty days and will continue to not be enacted as long as Canada complies. Essentially save for a few extra million dollars of spending, this will have little to no effect on the economies of either country.
It already did impact the economies of both. The Canadian dollar was its lowest in twenty years and the stock market was in disarray. Granted both of those can bounce back, but even the threat of tariffs has had impacts.
the working class on both sides of the border are getting taken by this intentional chaos by our recent regime change. genuinely sorry and trust me when I say, we are stronger together.

I don't think the anthems are usefull in professional sporting events. Originally the anthem was played to capture the crowd attention to signify a game was about to start.
Really loved the visuals in this video. Cool to see the arena and some of the scenery rather than hockey clips, fitting for not so much of a hockey video.
From a SOLEY hockey perspective: if the current conflict brings more attention to hockey via the 4 nations face off it’s better for the sport. Again, ONLY from a hockey perspective.
I remember going to a Canuck game right after Gillett bought the Habs and and they drowned out the entire anthem. I mean I get it with the bravado being displayed which is always over the top with DT but at the same time our junior teams have been booed and cheered against for a long time when playing on Canadian ice. Even against the Russians back when. It never made sense to me even with the rivalry that has developed due to an improved USA hockey landscape. I always root Canada 2nd being a border state guy (I can walk to the border..) but let's be honest, there has been an air of "we are more higher class european than north american" for a long time that runs counterintuitive to our shared landmass and the great piece of real estate and freedoms that we both share. The tariff war will predictably evaporate and a deal will be struck but that hasnt stopped the sky is falling crowd from grabbing a megaphone.
Im gonna comment before watching this video - I'm Canadian, and as threatening as trumps tarrifs are to our economy, I think its pretty disrespectful to boo the other countries anthem...
Why should we respect the national anthem of a country that started a massive and devastating trade war with their closest ally completely unprovoked? Booing the national anthem seems like a pretty mild show of discontent all things considered
@ exactly. Like Trudeau said our relationship used to be the envy of the WORLD. The longest border in the world and total peace for 150 years. All extinguished in a moment by an egomaniacal tyrant.

The tariffs have been paused for a month and I don't think will ever go into effect. It was just a way to get Canada to the negotiation table. Also, America gives Canada and a lot of other allies as well as a lot of adversaries a lot of money for nothing in return most of the time. I believe things will be better soon.
I have always believed that THE GAME of hockey is the most classy of any sport. Teams shake hands with their opponents whom are going further towards championship or going home. Hockey players have ALWAYS been the best dressed pre and post game. So, can't the fans just not boo the opposing anthem? Let the teams on the ice do the talking!!! Class!!!
I feel like we should appreciate the historical significance of Canadians booing this song specifically. Our beef goes ALL the way back to before the song was written. Americans say they won, Canadians claim they won, the only thing anyone agrees on is the British lost. Lest we forget Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian, and many of us live in NEW England, NEW York, or even NEW Scotland. Eck lives in Halifax, they still blast the cannons off everyday at noon, muskets are ready, come what may old boy.
Sportsnet in Canada needs to reduce the amount of times they air the National Anthem before a game. TSN's Regional Telecasts are smart to not air the playing of the National Anthem for almost every single game.
I don't think the tarrifs were ever meant to cripple Canada's economy or hurt Canadian citizens, they were meant to get Trudeau's attention and force him to do what we've needed him to do which is quit allowing these things that hurt both of our countries to continue. My reason for thinking they were never meant to hurt the economy and just to force his hand is as soon as Trudeau folded they were "paused". It was purely a business tactic in my opinion
First, Trudeau didn't fold, he had been promising the border security since December. The only thing new was the "fentanyl czar". Second, the tariffs were absolutely intended to cripple Canada's economy. Trump said it himself, that he wants to annex Canada via "economic force."
@FlowFinderUSAWe’d already stated we were going to spruce up the border back in December, before Trump was sworn in, we just reiterated that to him. Cause he clearly doesn’t pay attention to Canadian news so he thinks it’s a victory when really it just makes him look ignorant.

Why are national anthems even played during NHL games where the players are from all over the world. Olympics, sure, World Cup, sure. Where nations are playing other nations. But playing anthems in the NHL is an antiquated tradition when the league is multinational.
It's going to be interesting at 4 nations and might bring out patriotism in both countries. It also doesn't help Panthers visted trump recently. Another thing to note is most hockey players r right wingers and probabaly think this booing is wrong but can't do anything in fear of nhl.
Youre funny thinking the NHL will punish such players. Gary chose to alienate marginalized folks in favor of bending the knee to the f@cistic right wing party in America. Its all money to him and a lot of players and coaches
As an American who has generally been in favor of the current government, while still standing on my Libertarian views, I’m certainly not in favor of the tariffs for Canada. Mexico is more understandable since they control a large majority of our auto industry which has been making owning a car unaffordable for many people for quite some time. Canada however has always produced well made products at reasonable prices, and there was never any need for tariffs to be put in place for you guys. i know this isnt a political channel as you say and thats perfectly fine, but i actually like that you brought this up. i think its important to acknowledge that even the world of hocky isnt in its own bubble, that all of us invested in the sport are just as equally apart of the world going on around us. that same world which is seeping its way into national anthems before certain matches.
I'm just looking forward to the first year Canada, Russia, and the USA play an international tournament again. It's going to be WILD. I feel for the unfortunate kids in JR who'll get to carry the weight of expectations, from a universe beyond 5am practices in cold ass rinks in the artic circle. Those first few tournaments are going to be so good.
People are NOT acknowleding that there are young artists, including students from schools who bust their asses to perfect what they love for their musical journeys. That alone and other things proves that booing the national anthem is petty. As well, there are veterans and active-duty service members who fight for this country, and they fought for our right to even be here debating this, so the anthems are meant to honour them, too.
As an American dear Canadians, please keep booing us right now. Our government sucks and I can't blame you. We're supposed to be brothers. It's not supposed to be like this.
Booing is a perfectly fine way to express their displeasure, however calling tariffs an attack on the sovereignty of Canada misses the point of why they were threatened to be imposed.
Really it comes down to this: America is not respecting Canada and Canadians. Why should we be respectful to a country that is being so disrespectful to us?
I’d be perfectly fine with it if, in the interest of keeping politics out of sports, the NHL/NBA/NFL/MLB stopped singing the national anthems prior to games. Too often in recent years it ends up being a source of controversy in some fashion.
I’m American, and a Flyers fan. Love hockey and Canada. I’m sorry our country has its head up its ass. I think Trump is acting like the clown he always has been. I fear it’ll only get worse.
As an american no matter people are booing because of the goverment or whatever the reason is, its still disrespectful. I don't see how booing the anthem and saying "USA Sucks" arnt the same thing. It feels like a target twords american people.
Shouldn't have booed. But people in states have booed ours for years. Remember when they flew our Flag upside down. If i was there I would have sat down
i think people should keep politics and their opinions at home and to themselves, booing a national anthem at a professional sports event is just so disrespectful in so many ways and not just to the people who they're booing the players, the teams, the league. ect
If we should keep politics out of this, then why do they sing the national anthem before the game ? They don't play for their country. Alot of the players are europeans. or canadians playing on a american team.
@ And as much as I agree with that point, respect is also about supporting the performers whose' music careers are ongoing. Booing sets a bad precedent for small kids, but most importantly, first-time performers who may be kids can get rattled.
This is probably the most public and attention-grabbing way for Canadians to voice their displeasure at the tariffs. I think a combination of this and the stock markets crashing convinced Trump to backtrack. And yes, he did backtrack: the things he asked Canada to do were already agreed to by both the Canadian government and the Biden administration.
@FlowFinderUSA just because Trudeau is inept and allegedly "folded" doesn't equal we have been a bad neighbour. Rhetoric like yours doesn't endeer any Canadian to your position either.
if you are the big guy and try to bully your less powerful neighbor, what do you expect? With duties and tariffs in place, do you expect a lot of sympathy from the people? it`s their jobs that are threatened by it. America first might work well in the USA, but i doubt it gets much favor in CAN. You can`t ask for others to respect your anthem, you can only earn it.
Not to turn this into a political discussion but I think the tariffs are temporary. It’s basically a measure to get everyone to the table to get a real deal done.
I'm from Sweden with one parent from the US and I stand by Canada 110%. There's no defending what Trump is doing to Canada. This is beyond disgraceful!

I think it's completely fair to be vocal about our displeasure towards a nation whose head of state is actively calling for our annexation.
O Canada!
Land of our ancestors
Glorious deeds circle your brow
For your arm knows how to wield the sword
Your arm knows how to carry the cross;
Your history is an epic
Of brilliant deeds
And your valor steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights.

Thanks for this. Just remember a lot of Americans agree, and we can and should rely on our community here to get us through this ridiculousness.

Respectfully our prime minister is terrible and has put us in this position
I was at the Blues-Oilers game tonight. Fortunately, neither side booed either anthem
Maybe Trudeau shouldn't have tried to play hardball when your economy could be crippled like that.
This is what happens when the US leader treats the best neighbours he could possibly ask for like they’re trash.

All President Trump asked was for Canada to pull its weight protecting our shared border! How was that grievous?
It's going to be interesting at 4 nations and might bring out patriotism in both countries. It also doesn't help Panthers visted trump recently. Another thing to note is most hockey players r right wingers and probabaly think this booing is wrong but can't do anything in fear of nhl.
Youre funny thinking the NHL will punish such players. Gary chose to alienate marginalized folks in favor of bending the knee to the f@cistic right wing party in America. Its all money to him and a lot of players and coaches
There are consequences for every action. This is an irrefutable fact.
As an American who has generally been in favor of the current government, while still standing on my Libertarian views, I’m certainly not in favor of the tariffs for Canada. Mexico is more understandable since they control a large majority of our auto industry which has been making owning a car unaffordable for many people for quite some time.
As an American, I look at the booing of the Anthem as booing Trump's policies. That's fine with me.

Shouldn't have booed. But people in states have booed ours for years. Remember when they flew our Flag upside down. If i was there I would have sat down
i think people should keep politics and their opinions at home and to themselves, booing a national anthem at a professional sports event is just so disrespectful in so many ways and not just to the people who they're booing the players, the teams, the league. ect
💯%, even the young performers who occasionally get asked to perform! Not just the other performers. It's just a disgrace
