I need to pick some these books up as I need to read something different. For too long I have been falling down the rabbit hole of current affair books (books on race, dem vs repub garbage, etc) which I am getting tired of as it just feels like a bad echo chamber of judgements. Any good recommendations? Which books have been your favorite?

@WildernessTea That's a very broad topic. is there a particular time period you're interested in or a particular topic in history? which book took you down your rabbit trail and you sound burned out.

@BookZealots Any time period. Any military history/battles/ presidents. The book that caused me to tumble down that rabbit hole was A People’s History Of The United States.
@WildernessTea Thank you for sharing. Here's the short list:
Annie Jacobsen is a good author. I haven't read everything she's written, but everything I've read has been well researched.
White Gold by Giles Milton was something I'd never read anywhere else.
    Jesse James by T.J. Stiles
    Any book by Nathaniel Philbrick
The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku An Artist in Treason by Andro Linklater

I agree with history - it's important to read from a variety of viewpoints. It always opens up a new thought and things you might not consider.

My grandmother told me to question everything, including what I was taught in school. Even something as simple as who discovered North America. It wasn't Columbus. But it also wasn't Amerigo Vespucci, and yet we're named after him. LOL I didn't learn that in school. I should have added a caveat though, because there are incidences of "sides" being more barbarous. Thank you for commenting and sharing. I appreciate it.

Thomas Jefferson was really close to Lafayette. I think there were probably a lot who liked him. When he returned in 1824, 80000 people were at the harbor to welcome him. It was reported only 4000 were at the Beatles arrival. He was super loved by Americans. I am a Lafayette lover. Can you tell? Can’t wait for your review. I have the Ron Chernow books on Hamilton and Washington. The Hamilton is a big book too.

Hello~ How are you doing in the heat? Yes, Lafayette and Jefferson were friends, but the person I'm thinking of is lesser known; it's not Washington, not Jefferson, not Franklin. It is really bugging me. I read it somewhere, possibly Valiant Ambition and it was, "oh! I didn't know that!" And now I've forgotten. 🤦‍♀ If you find out, can you let me know? Or, maybe I'll find out in the the Lafayette book. LOL
Chernow definitely writes big books. I think my son has started Hamilton. Today I asked him how long it took him to read Washington and he said about three months. sigh, three months! That will put me into September!
Are you reading anything right now?

@@BookZealotsI just finished up a Sharon Kay penman historical fiction. I need to finish Lee by Allen guelzo. I about halfway through. I have3 Ron chernow books but have only read grant. It was 95 here today hear index 106. I put out water and had a frog a lizard and a CB hawk drinking. There are 2 creeks so the wildlife has a water source. I have a rat snake living in my detached garage. I need to put out water for him. I’m about over this hot weather but I don’t like the really cold either. Do you subscribe to the channel passage of time. She reads mostly historical books and biographies of historical people. She focuses a lot on royal history which I know you’re not interested in reading. I really like her channel. I invited her to the David McCullough book read along. I can’t wait for your review on Lafayette. Fast reading. Just kidding!!! I am gonna try to go to McKay’s tomorrow to find the David McCullough books I don’t hav. See if they have them before I order them. You left having suspense with the books you didn’t show us. I always enjoy seeing your books.

They can take care of themselves. do you use a bucket of water for your feet when the heat index is that high? Your area is slightly hotter than our area. That's interesting. Is it because you're so far south? I like that you have two creeks near you. That's really neat. You have mentioned passage of time. Hi, hello and what a TBR! Yours is a lot more serious than mine for July. I finished the new Lucy Foley, Midnight Feast, this weekend and was very surprised with how much I enjoyed it! It's right up there with the Guest List and Hunting Party. I started the new Riley Sager, Middle of the Night, and now just waiting for it to pick up and get exciting. After this I'm gonna read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which I'm pretty excited for since I've never read it, and it will be nice to prepare for James whenever that becomes available (12 weeks as of this morning!!)
Thanks again for sharing and take care!

    • @BookZealots

Hi, hello~ That is great news about enjoying Midnight Feast. Yay! I hope Sager doesn't let you down. Huck Finn is good. I hated the use of a specific word. It was really overdone, but the adventure and relationship is good. Hopefully your hold will come in sooner than 12 weeks. I noticed that happens sometimes. My son said he thinks the library fabricates their holds. At least, he thinks ours does. I have no proof and hadn't even considered it until he mentioned it. Because I started noticing, if I put an audiobook on my wishlist, it's always available, but as soon as I request it there are numbeorus people who want it and are now waiting for it? 🤷‍♀️ it does seem suspicious. Our county isn't that big. It's just a little suspicious. Especially since the books I request aren't the popular books and then suddenly 7 people are waiting for a book I have? I hope you enjoy Huck Finn. There was only one part I felt was tedious. I didn't like it in the movie either. Hope you have a great week.

I need to try Ron Chernow(autocorrect wants to make his name Cheeto🤪).

I love all the Revolutionary era American history!
The James Preston one also sounds good!

Defenders of the Faith is super dense. It was interesting in parts, but it covers a lot of history about a lot of topics, in a lot of land. Hahahaha, Cheeto! That's hilarious. Thank you for sharing that. From now on I'm going to think of Ron Chernow books at Cheeto books.

I started reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass a couple years ago (I don’t remember if I finished the book) and goodness was it powerful. Obviously I knew the life of a slave was bleak, but I didn’t understand just how intense and heartbreaking their sense of hopelessness would have been (born a slave, live as a slave, die a slave).

    • @BookZealots

I'd recommend reading Uncle Tom's Cabin next. I remember reading a book I found in Savannah, GA at a museum and it was very controversial but very thought provoking. I can only imagine how heart breaking it would be too, to be promised freedom when so and so dies, but then have that promise broken. I do not know that I could be like Uncle Tom.
