I just ordered this and I'm pretty blown away by MediaLight's customer service and their crazy warranty. Yes, they do cost more but you're getting pro lighting and an unheard of warranty.
I use LED light strips in conjunction with my recessed lighting for my theater to set the mood when a Movie isn’t playing but while watching, especially since I have a projector, I have all the lights off.
I have a 2.35:1 projection screen and zoom out to fill it. Of course, this causes light spillage above and below the screen. In a completely dark room the spillage is more pronounced and annoying to me. I'm considering bias lighting on all four sides, which I'm pretty sure would eliminate this problem. Of course, it introduces the lighting itself, which may increase perceived contrast and kind of looks cool and may take some getting used to. At least it's more uniform light than the light spillage, which appears and disappears depending on the brightness of the image. If a scene is bright, the spillage is much less noticeable. In dark scenes it's very noticeable. Again, very annoying to me! Anyone else using bias lighting to eliminate this problem? Thanks!
I wonder if you could just use something like cable C channel to direct the light downward and upward of your projection screen. That way it doesn't bleed light.
Exactly. This is better for a flat panel. Its not appropriate for a projector. In my room, I am using a flat panel (soon to upgrade to 85") so it works in my case.
Depends on the viewer, the room and the projector. There is no dark room viewing when a reflective screen (or transmissive display) is turned on. But, yes, bias light would be very dim for a projector. Even for a transmissive display, it does not take much.
I use one. 98% of the time I have it on. Occasionally I'll turn it off, randomly.... to make watching a film more "cinematic" the feeling I sometimes get watching with the light on is like viewing a grading suite monitor. With it off, it just feels more "theatrical" but my eyes get tied after an hour with it off and have to turn back on by the end of the film.

Quick? I'll give it a shot. It works in a few complementary ways. The first, is the "optical illusion" The screen looks darker because the surround is lighter. The second is physiological. More constant light makes the pupil smaller. Compare to a camera lens. Stop it down and less light is allowed in. So, the iris constricts the pupil more and less light gets in (relative to the increased ambient light). This increases perceived contrast. Third, when you stop down a lens, you can capture a sharper image because you achieve deep focus as opposed to shallow focus. The image will appear sharper to many people. If this sounds like BS, there is a new eye drop called Vuity that works on this principle. It makes the pupil smaller so you can see better without glasses. The opposite happens when the opthamologist dilates your pupils. Everything is blurry and washed out because too much light is coming in from more angles. So, the image looks darker because the surround is lighter (illusion), and the smaller pupil is restricting the amount of light and the angles of light, as with a camera lens (not an illusion).
You're also paying for professional stats. Amazon lights are going to have flicker, inaccurate color and poor brightness. Additionally, you're not getting a 5 year warranty or free damage coverage off an ebay post.
I don't want to be a downer but you and your guest seem to have the wrong idea of what 'media lighting' (a terrible term btw), is supposed to be for. It was originally a necessity (and maybe still is) for photographers who edit their images on calibrated computer monitors. The best environment for high quality image work is a dark room BUT with some ambient light of the right colour temperature and position. The position is a most important attribute, behind the monitor. So that part is OK. Adding media lighting for movie watching is not a good idea. Yes it will increase the ambient light in a room but why? If your screen is larger than 50" then no extra ambient lighting is necessary. If you watch only projected images on a BIG screen then ambient light is not only unwanted but in fact would be a major detriment to the experience. If you only have a small screen then yes I agree that some ambient lighting might be a good thing but the premise most would take from this presentation is that ALL screening environments should have 'media lighting'. Not so.

Bias light is better for flat panels. Not really good for projectors. With projectors, you want to make the room as dark as possible. You dont need to do that for flat panels.

I can't believe you're supporting this blatant ripoff. 5m is $99.99. That's only 16.4ft. You can but these with WRGB and have colors and dimming features. This is a scam.
The cost is based on the cost of the materials. We also manufacture a lower cost version of our products that costs $35 for 5 meters. Lower cost due to lower number of LEDs and slightly lower CRI (95 versus 98). It’s a lower cost product that has a higher profit margin, and just because you don’t need accurate lighting, doesn’t mean that other people don’t.
You're paying for quality and professional accuracy. Colorists will pay well over $10,000 for a single reference monitor because quality matters. Yes, you can color grade on a WalMart monitor but your results will be bad. Medialight was recommended by Darren M, who is a world-class color grader. I'm not going to argue with his recommendations.
Oh boy. Here we go. The quality of the light (color index) matters. The quantity of LEDs per inch matters. That those LEDs are on a black strip instead of a white backing material matters. So if your light is working for you, that’s great. For real, no sarcasm. But god, I wish people didn’t hate on higher quality stuff just because it doesn’t suit their particular needs.
