This is one of my favorite races of all time. I got to watch this with my papaw. The last time I seen him win before 2015 with my papaw was 2012 in Michigan. This was a long time coming. It felt really good to see him win with my papaw.
Just watching how they all ended up single file on the high groove, you'd think that it'd be the simplest thing to see but you don't realize how much you miss seeing that until they stopped racing at restrictor plates that way. All the drivers knew, ride around until the end, then go for it. And Gordon leading, the head of the snake, it just, looked so cool.
Watching this race I see a big difference in a older Jeff Gordon. I watch the 2000 race from Talladega earlier and watch a young Jeff Gordon come from the back of the pack and win the race. In this race he had on drive to get to the front. Congrats to Dale Jr. in winning the race.
In the closing laps DW mentions how he doesn't remember the last time he's seen a line like that form on the top at the end of a race there, yet it happened in basically EVERY dega race in the last 12 years. This race's finish gave me flashbacks to the 2006 fall dega race when jr had em' all strung out along the top with Jimmie running in 2nd. Different circumstances dictated the outcome of that race but it shows that it doesn't matter what kind of aero package is used, it's gonna happen if the leader wants it to.
They ended up single file because Dale Jr. was simply too strong. The 24 was the only car that had any chance against him. Can't catch him or pass him, might as well line up and save your spot until the end. The 88 just had them covered that day.
0:12-0:20 the carmea guy makes the water bottle roll a little bit LOL. I also love that Dale Jr won this race it was awesome. 1 more thing i liked was the inside of Kevin Harvick's car while the big werck was setting out during lap 47 and the red flag came out the cramera goes inside harvicks car and i liked it
I'm curious. Why does everyone complain about single file racing. I mean it's not entertaining but look at all pre 2001 plate races. They were all single file around the bottom every single time
Jack Johnson this year 2018 I was watching the Daytona and I was looking at what everyone was saying on Twitter live. They crashed so much and everyone complained about how often they were crashing and saying they need to settle down. And then when they ran single file for a good amount, everyone on Twitter proceeded to complain about how the race is too boring. So obviously people are stupid and can’t figure out what tf they want. And you make a great point; single file racing is what it was in the early 2000’s, and everyone says they want it to go back to that kind of racing but they always complain no matter what. People need to just grow up.
Ezra Kenicott NASCAR has to find a balance of both It’s no fun to watch one car dominate the hole race like the 2000 Dayton 500 but lately these races have been destruction derby
This kind of racing relaxed Dale. He may not admit it, but you can tell when people are just aces at certain things. Junior isn't a road course ace, but his thing was the drafting tracks. In his relaxation he drove very smoothly *for the most part*.
man this was a great race simply because Dale Jr won the race I think he was one of the best restrictor plate race car drivers he looked like his father racing out front on this track and Daytona. man do I miss seeing him win restrictor plate races
The package isn't broken because of the bad finish...just watch the first 165 or so laps. At the end of the day the track is the hottest, so at the beginning of the race you see the bottom strong and vice versa towards the end. It's just one of those deals, NASCAR can't control the sun and track temps.
There wasn't exactly much difference in the first 155 laps either. These cars do not side draft well and if you can't side draft at Dega, you are not going to have bigs like racing. It doesn't help that three HMS cars had all of the speed. Nobody could really catch up to Gordon, Johnson and Jr
Steven Juris these cars side draft better than the cup cars ever have. they side draft too well, you can bog each other down drafting off one another. when the fastest cars get to the front and it sorts out single file, it becomes very difficult for others to organize and go get them.
Steven Juris Then the other teams need to put their money where their mouth is. You can spend all you want on aero, but if your engines are shit, your whole car is shit.
Tyler Russell the package is broken, after three plate races this season its quite evident you cant make a pass when it counts.. need more spoiler on these cars so you can suck up and make a pass. i would bring back the wicker bill. these cars hit a pocket of air when you get to someones bumper and you stall out, its time for a change.
Yep. And that's after missing the first 11 races injured, I'm impressed. Although the Chase format definitely helped him. Not that I'm complaining, anything that makes the last race of the season actually matter is good as far as I'm concerned. Kinda wish other racing series would come up with something similar.
Ryan Blaney should've made that with 2-3 laps to go. It appears that everyone was waiting for him to. He just waited too long so Denny made it instead.
This is how racing should be. Not this stage racing BS! When Dale Earnhardt sr raced, there were no stage points, no chase, and no playoffs. They won championships, not chases!
I wonder why Kahne didn’t succeed at all at Hendricks.. I believe he won 6 or 7 races in a single season in a Dodge.. NASCAR makes no sense and Marin Truex is a Champion had no wins forever and all of a sudden wins like crazy something’s not right..
Yeah, don't mess with a Ford. Toyota, Please. Chevy, too darn loose. Dodge, only if your transmission lasts. We'll actually I had a '97 Monte Carlo---complete perfection.

No one would help him. Everyone stays single file like a pus**. He came to the bottom but no one would follow
Nice tribute to the late Steve Byrnes, my favorite pit reporter thanks big time to Michael Waltrip Racing Thanks, guys.

They call JR the pide piper for a reason. Although I will say if you go look back nine of the races you're referencing never happened on fox
+jrfan07 If you look back at the closing laps, there are about 4 separate draft trains that all run the high side. I think that's what DW meant.
They ended up single file because Dale Jr. was simply too strong. The 24 was the only car that had any chance against him. Can't catch him or pass him, might as well line up and save your spot until the end. The 88 just had them covered that day.
The scariest thing anyone can see in their mirror: 3 Hendrick cars coming at you from all angles
