    Thank you for being so specific! I've only ever done MLA format (I am a sophomore in college), but tonight I have a paper due in APA style and I needed help getting the formatting down. I've always been very anal about formatting because of my secretary work and the training I received for it, so I was getting really angry with Scribbr and other sites that wouldn't give me things like indent measurements or how far down on the page something goes or other details that I need to achieve proper APA style. Thank you for being so detailed. I was beginning to wonder if modern APA style was some giant secret or something.

    It is a very useful video and thanks for publishing it. Shall I ask about the book Volume location in the 7th edition? You skip it in the video.

    • @APAStylebySam
      @APAStylebySam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a book volume, you would add Vol. # after the edition. Everything else is the same. So after the title, you'd have something like (3rd ed., Vol. 2). Exception to that is if a volume has its own title, in which case you'd write out the series title, end with a colon, then write Vol. 2. Volume title.

  • @Nat-nq9gi
    @Nat-nq9gi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Hi there, can you please shed some light as to why titles/source titles vary on when to italicize and when not to? I own the 7th edition Publication Manual and there is no clarity on this topic. I've searched the internet and cannot find an answer either. What is your take on the use of italics in the reference list?

    • @Nat-nq9gi
      @Nat-nq9gi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found the answer to my question! APA 7th edition follows two formats; italic title or italic source. Works that stand alone use the italic title format. Works that are apart of a greater whole use the italic source. Here is the blog post from APA that explains this (sorry if you cover this in your video and I missed it lol) apastyle.apa.org/blog/two-reference-formats

    • @APAStylebySam
      @APAStylebySam 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 7th Edition actually does address this, starting on page 285. The short of it is that each reference entry has four pieces to it: author, date, title, and source. The source - journal, book, newspaper, website, etc. - is typically always italicized, while the actual title of the work is not. That's why the chapter title of an edited book is plain, but the book title is in italics, and why the article title is plain, but the journal title is in italics. Of course there are dozens of permutations that might alter that specific format, but that's the gist of it.

    • @Nat-nq9gi
      @Nat-nq9gi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@APAStylebySam Yea, I read that portion in the manual but I didn't find it to be a clear answer that I could give to students in a way they could easily grasp it. I emailed the APA Association and they led me to that blog post that I commented above. Yes, all references contain the 4 elements on the foundational level BUT on the formatting level, APA reference fall under two categories. Works that stand alone = italic title. Works that are part of a greater whole = italic source. To me, that explains why a book reference has an italic title element but an edited book chapter contains an italic source element. Book = work that stands alone. Edited book chapter = work thats part of a greater whole. (most works stand alone which is why most have italicized titles) Regardless, thanks for your input!

If you're just referring to author affiliations, ignore those and cite the authors themselves.

    • @APAStylebySam

      Retrieval dates are only necessary if you expect the information on that page to change. For example, if the site regularly updates/changes a specific page, a Google Map might change over time, etc. In the reference, you would put it before the URL, "Retrieved November 15, 2020, from URL". Otherwise, they are not needed.

    You are a hero! Thank-you for your good work! I have a couple of questions regarding an in-text citation, and referencing quotes from a Foreword, written by the translator of a translated book, that has a few editions, which was written by several authors. It has taken me hours, literally, to try to figure it out on my own and I am still not sure that I have nailed it. To tell the truth, I am pretty certain that I have not come anywhere close to nailing anything because I have taken two different instructions and tried to meld them together, somehow, and I am pretty sure that this is just not copacetic. I just wanted to give it a go before I asked for help, so as to not appear overly lame. I have pasted the whole kit and kaboodle, my goofball attempt, and the source of the trouble, I mean the book, below. Please note that the title of the book, in my Reference creation, was italicized but this platform will not translate that fact. Same goes with proper hanging indentation of lines following the first in my patch-work end result. Halps, please

      Wow, that is quite the reference you need! From glancing through it, this does not appear to be an edited book for two reasons: there is no editor listed and the chapters do not have unique authors. So, I think you just need to follow the guidelines for a translated book, which means your reference should be set up like this:
      Original Authors. (Year). Book title in italics (Translator, Trans.; # ed.). Publisher. (Original work published ####).
      For in-text citations, cite the original authors and put both the original publication year and translated publication year in the citation, with the original publication year first, as such:
      (Authors, ####/####)

    Is doi is optional or it is compulsory in APA 7th edition formatting

    • @APAStylebySam
      @APAStylebySam 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's a doi you should include it. If there isn't one, leave it out.

    Dr. Forlenza, should the title of web articles be italicized?

    • @APAStylebySam
      @APAStylebySam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's a web page, yes. If it's a research article that is accessed electronically, it's cited like any other research article.

    I think it would have greatly help if there is visual aid along with the audio. I'm not really into books but i have to. Referencing is as equally frustrating as reading books.

      Look at the entries for presentations. If the paper is published in a journal though, or a published abstract in a journal, go with that instead.

    When they are more than three authors, is not necessary to put them all. You can use et al,. or et al.
