Well, in Genesis 1:14 it does say that God gave us the lights in sky: “Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years;”

We have a retired postman here in Donegal, he delivered mail in the Bluestack Mountains for over 48 years and predicted the weather too. He predicted the heatwave we had in 2018 and the big freeze in 2010. He does it all by watching nature, the birds, the animals, the leaves etc. He learnt it all from the older generation around where he grew up and he's usually right. This year he's predicting we're going to have a good summer................thank goodness.

I am a fairly new gardener..this is year 2. I was told by my great aunt about planting by the moon. I went to her for gardening advice because our entire family knows her as being the one person in the family, completely incapable of killing a plant. when I asked her what advice she had to offer a new gardener, her only reply,"plant by the moon". I have since been tying to learn everything I can about this topic. I have also been watching a lot of homesteading youtubers, I started watching about a month before you guys got started. I found you through Jess. I have already learned so much from all of you, but this is the first information that I have seen from my favorite youtubers. I want to thank you so much for being "crazy". I aspire to be that crazy too. Also, thank you for the printable charts...so helpful.. love yall

I love this! I am a TN native. My great grandmother, Momma Lessie, was a Pentecostal Cherokee-Irish that raised 11 children during the Great Depression. She taught me growing "by the signs" and Moon phases. I have followed this every since I started gardening. The only fails I have ever had was when I didn't adhere to the teachings. A big no-no was to not sew on Sunday. All seeds had to be planted by your own hands (no gloves), and to walk in the garden barefoot, but nowhere else. Watch your gates (Ear gate, Eye gate, Mouth gate). All gates go straight to your spirit. Ear gate, be careful of what you hear. Eye gate, be careful of what you see. Mouth gate, be careful of what you say. And, the word "hate" was forbidden, cause "hate" was of the devil. The best for learning was that what you put out you get back. "God don't like ugly". "Blessin's come to those that ain't looking for 'em." My favorite lesson of all was, "Miss Mossy, just be still. Listen a while. You might just hear what you're needin'.'" Oh, and "never climb a latter when your expecting. It will tie the cord around the baby's neck."

    • @Flowerlady731
      @Flowerlady731 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sorry, I had to change the word "pregnant" to "expecting". That was also a forbidden word, too.

Farmers almanac has been apart of my life since as far back as I remember. My grandparents and parents followed it and also lived by the FoxFire books. I’m old school and it works. 🙌 God created it all from the moon to the stars to the soil we plant in. Ecclesiasticus tells us there’s a time for everything. Even planting and harvesting

Thanks for sharing this fun topic. I have always gardened, raised 3 great boys, and everything else by the signs. I have all the same traditions you have like always entering and exiting the same door, no canning or gardening during that time and so on. They really do work and I passed this information onto my children and grandchildren. I always throw salt over my left shoulder if I spill it, this blinds the devil so that it can’t take your soul. I also put some coins out the the front porch on New Year’s Eve and then bring it back in on New Year’s Day, that way you’ll have money coming in all year long. My kids always enjoyed doing this when they were little and still do it with their families. My New Year’s dinner is always Fried chicken, sweet potato casserole, turnip greens, black eyed peas, fried hog jowl and rolls. The one year I didn’t prepare this my kitchen caught on fire and did $7000.00 worth of damages (34 years ago). Needless to say this meal is a big deal to me. 🤣. I have many more but I've already talked your ear off. Sending y'all love and hugs from Tennessee ❤️🤗

    This is so much fun.
This is what I grew up with.
The one I get odd questions of is shoes off at the door and I have a little mat that you wipe your feet on. Once everyone is entered I take the mat and shake it off out the door.
I also every time I go to wild forage for food I bring a bit of nutts and butter that I leave behind to say thanks

I am so interested in this. I've been gardening most of my 60 years but didn't know about planting by the signs etc. And I have been so puzzled lately by some plants. New raised garden beds with the same soil and I planted the same seed in two places not far from each other. Seeds all germinated well but Now 6 weeks later one group are eight inches high and doing great, the other group which I planted two days later, are only 2 to 3 inches high and not doing good at all. Had this happen with several types of seed. So interesting. Thanks for explaining about this !!! Love y'all.

Great video, I learned the planting by the signs from my parents and grandparents. My Mom was fanatic about the door thing, but many you mentioned here I had heard from her. One I remember was don't step across a broom lying on the floor it brings bad luck. If you drop a spoon or fork, company is coming, a spoon was a woman and a fork was a man. I have so many and alot I forgot, the older generations practiced these fervently. Blessings

New moon coming up on the 22nd. We Yankees like to plant by the new moon, but that is the 22nd. We tend to plant seed after Memorial Day. Full moon on June 5th. New Hampshire is forecasted to be warming up this week.
It can be s darn cold here, we jump into planting when we feel there is no danger of frost. Our northern weather stations really try to follow when a frost might be heading our way. Thanks for sharing some of your old family tradition folk lore. OK, I do know there is a lot said about the moon's pull. I am retired, so it should be safe to can " at will ". But I will say that a full moon will wake me up, even if it is a rainy/cloudy night.... There is more to Mother Nature than first meets the eye...

Oh and one of my things that I do & live by is burning sage. I truly believe it helps keep bad energy out. I do it at the start of every season & also right before we have any kind of celebration & throughout the week as I feel the need. I also never use an old broom in a new house. With being a retired military family, we moved around a lot & I always bought a new broom & smudged the house before moving in.

Sure enough, looked at mailing, Frankfort, I am in Burgin, little burg east of Harrodsburg. Love the content and love to support KY TH-camrs. So I think I will stick around, Subbed, Belled and smashed that Like button. Also good to know you go to church. My grandfather always said to plant potatoes on good Friday, and if the tree leaves turn silver on the wind, a storm is coming. Jenn I have always called my period my moontime, probably since I studied to be a witch in my early 20's. I am in my mid 60's now and I still practise wisecraft every single day of the year. Everything is done by the moon and the phases of the moon and star signs. When it is your moontime you should just chill out and be. Read books, tell your babies stories etc but just be with your family and don't try to do much at all. I recommend a great book called The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, set in the time of the coat of many colours. It is a wonderful read and you can guess what the red tent was?? If you can find it then give it a read as it is wonderful reading. I just searched The Book Depository and they have it in stock.

It's definitely REAL! The calendar was by the back door and my Dad lived by it, if we had a question we always asked him. From fishing, cutting hair to surgeries, the calendar had to be checked.

It's so true...DO NOT make sauerkraut when you're on your monthly. It turns into a stinking rotten mess. My grandma wouldn't even let us in the kitchen when she was shredding her cabbage. Or don't make pickled beans and don't go in the gardens lol. It will kill plants.

One of my favorite things to can is homegrown pickles from the Boston pickling cukes I grow every year. The one time I canned them and it was during the monthly, they were the worse tasting pickles ever - and I did everything the same as I always do. They were so bitter and gross! I have subscribed to the Farmer's Almanac for several years and use their planting dates. One other thing I do that the husband thinks is weird is collect either rain water (it's south Texas so we don't get a whole lot) or regular water in buckets, watering cans and mason jars then set them out under a full moon. Supposed to help the "energy". I've used that water on seedlings and struggling plants and they've done amazing. I also will drink the water from the mason jars and I know it sounds crazy, but it tastes different, as in better. Weird...

My dad always planted by the moon. When he first started out he laughed when a lady told him about planting by the signs and so he planted when he wanted, his crop didn't do good. He never doubted her again. Lol

I had a wart on my hand which totally annoyed me when my husband and I first got married. Anytime I would grip something it would make it sore. Alex, my husband, heard I was going to have it burned off at the doctor's office. He said no that he could get rid of it. He took a thread and rubbed on the wart and then took the thread and buried it and when the thread in the ground was gone, my wart would be gone. I said that would take too long. So he said ok, let me buy it from you. I thought he was crazy. He gave me a nickel for my wart and told me to forget about it. In several weeks, it was gone. He has done it for several people we know and I still can't believe it. His grandmother was the one that told him how to do it. We were also told that when you get choked to raise your hands up in the air straight and it will stop you from choking. My son is a nurse and to this day still does that. We all do. He did it one day at the table during lunch and one of the Doctors asked him why he put his arms up. The doctor told him he was crazy. My son said I stopped choking, right? They all laughed at the doctor. That's just two of them I can think of right now. Always plant by the signs.

My son will be 56 in early August. When he was a baby, he drank from a bottle, because hubby did not want me to breast feed. So my hubbys grandmother told me that when I was ready to wean him from the bottle, to look at the Old Farmers Almanac. I had never heard of that but we looked and planned ahead. He had been using a sippy cup for a couple of months, so at age 10 months he walked and was weaned ! It was so easy. He never asked or cried...he ate real good and drank his fluids from his sippy cup.
My hubby has always planted by the signs.

Does planting by the moon apply to container/indoor plants, or just plants in the ground?

Sounds like it's a good thing I've gone through menopause! Maybe that's why grandma always seems to have that magic touch.
Planting on Good Friday is actually planting by the moon because the date Easter falls on each year is determined by the moon. It's always the Sunday following the first full moon after March 21.

Morgan Bailey Lord have mercy, I stepped over my cousin and my Aunt screamed bloody murder and ran to back me back over her so she wouldn’t be barren! Also never sweep a broom over someone’s feet, apparently that will cause them to never marry.
