I disagree with you recommendation of leaving HDR as the default mode for the Fly 12 CE for the following reason: when on, it actually combines two images (one overexposed, the other underexposed) and when combining the two, I found the results to be a little more blurry. In a case of having to identify a licence plate, I noticed I couldn't when HDR was enabled but could with EIS or no correction was applied. The fact that the image is darker on the new Fly 12 CE is possibly a choice made in order to minimize exposure time, hence minimizing the blurriness of the image as well. That way, you have a better chance of getting a clear reading of a licence plate.HDR much improves image brightness and saturation, at the cost of sharpness.Otherwise, thanks for taking the time to make this video and compare both models.
A fair comment - video capture depends on a lot of factors. An important one is the type of light (e.g. cloudy/overblown, sunny, direct sun, shady, dusk) and depending on this details and definition of number plates are significantly affected. When the conditions are poor, even the best settings or the best camera will struggle. Another key factor is the speed and distance. When a vehicle is travelling towards the camera, there is a higher chance of capturing details than when it is travelling away. The speed in both situations and distance from the camera also come into consideration. In a worst case scenario, it is likely that a vehicle is very close to the bicycle and this would increase the ability to capture details but it is also possible in difficult conditions (rain / darkness) so few clues are available... but these clues are still important if the video is needed. A practical tip for identifying number plates that are hard to see, 'scrub' the footage. Move the video play head back and forth. Video is designed to trick the human eye so on a freeze frame there can be less information than on moving footage... manually scrubbing the video can provide extra clues to identify characters on a number plate.
Hi @MrJason002, I have heard of the problems connecting with devices. I tried a Magellan but this isn't supported . For Garmin users, various issues have reported in the Australian Cycling Forums.
Nowhere do you show images for rego identification. I'm not going to be using it for holiday pics. It gives an image - great. Beyond that, all I want it for is to give me the rego number.
Hi @Richard Bull. In this video, less time was spent on the concept the Fly12 bike camera but gaining more information on this will enable you to gain a clearer idea of the purpose and function. As a video camera, the roll is capturing video. There is no specific or special function to capture number plates beyond this. In short, if there is an incident then you open the video and try and identify the numberplate. In good light it can work well but when the light is poor (e.g. night) or the vehicle speed is too fast, it can be difficult or even impossible to decipher it. However to get an idea, in the video above, the resolution is noted and if you can view it at roughly the original size and then pause the video, you can see for yourself. That said, youtube do compress videos so the quality on this video may be poorer... so ensure that you also select the highest possible viewing quality. Beyond this, a lot of riders enjoy capturing their ride and sharing so the video quality captured is a fairly significant deciding factor.
@@dingodoggy66 Thanks for the feedback, while I try to show what I feel is appropriate, this is not paid or sponsored so I recommend approaching the brand directly.
@David Ward, HDR is only on 30fps which has a lower batter drain than 60fps. Comparing 30fps with HDR off or on, on paper it is only a few minutes difference so not enough that you would consider whether or not you activated it.
The charging LED on the FLy12CE and Fly6CE changes from red to green. If you have been charging for more than 8 hours and it doesn't change, I suggest contacting Cycliq as it could be a defect.
Yes, in practice you get a constant rumbling road noise which isn't nice but hear the cars and if you shout out a license plate number, this will be heard. For this video to demonstrate footage quality, the audio from the devices was softened/removed.
Any idea when cycliq will integrate varia radar and ant plus to the device. This will enable longer rides to record all the close passes with battery to spare as it will only be on when the varia spots an overtaking car.
Nice idea - only recording on the rear camera when movement is detected. I am guessing this is not on their agenda at all - there are a few basic functions that I would be keen to see, for example video preview with their smart phone apps was always hit and miss and I understand was simply stopped. There have been a number of recommendation made to Cycliq for improvements though these don't tend to make it through... even some really basic improvements like visible recording lights. A connection with Garmin products will be a big ask as it involves a bit more work of allowing connections to other sensors / devices so I would understand it when the company focus on more simple improvements. On the plus side, Cycliq cameras get decent run-times of about 4 hours for the rear and 5 hours for the front. Sometimes it has short record times (for no known reason) and often a complete erase of the micro-sd card fixes this. There are some small issue with this idea is when there is a vehicle that travels at the same speed, sometimes it no longer appears and would means it wouldn't be recorded. Currently the recording also takes about 5 seconds (from when you turn the unit on) so it would have to be faster. And this would only suit the rear cycliq camera.
How do I access footage on the Cycliq Fly 12ce camera?? I connected it to my Samsung galaxy S20fe phone using the suplied cable and a usb adapter. I opened the cycliq app on my phone. Connected the camera via Bluetooth to my phone. On the menu on the app, I clicked on "My fotage" or "My videos", and it says "Connect to the camera using a cable"... But I already connected it to my phone using the suplied cable.. Can you please make a video about how to access this camera's footage? Thank you.
Most cycling lights don't flash fast enough to cause seizures buddy! And I always ride with flashing lights. They are far more effective at doing their job to drivers.
1:09 DI-IP 100. German license plate, Darmstadt-Dieburg (Hesse) region. Indeed a close call.
Indeed, a very dangerous pass and with verbal abuse and the middle from the driver (which can't been seen on the video).

Great video!! Next sample gps frequency interference with cycling computers and Strava metric integration.

The mic is extremely sharp. They so indeed pick up sound.
Yes, you can record the sound of your farts and the disturbed look at the people behind you....

anyone running those seizure-inducing flashing bikelights should be flogged.
