  • To celebrate 1,000 subscribers, we made this video cleaning a really dirty carpet with the Oreck Orbiter. We did this to test whether this carpet could be salvaged, as the complex had doubts regarding the possibility it could. Usually we don't release videos unless they are a full job, so this is usually not shared. Hope you enjoy it. And please subscribe if you haven't.
    Links for the Orbiter, and the bonnet (remember to order bonnets, pads, and brushes separately, as the Orbiter comes with a pad driver but nothing else)...

    Regarding using simple green, plain I assume, and it's pH, how do you remove it per se? Advise the home owner to vacuum after dry, or use a rinsing chemical?

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  ปีที่แล้ว

      When you go over everything with the bonnet is removes enough of the Simple Green to not be an issue. We never had any resoiling issues or problems with it like could happen with products that have higher pH ratings (SG is around 8.5-9.5) but that being said, you could rinse if you chose to and it wouldn't hurt a thing. So it is an option for those who feel the need but in our experience and others after using this on hundreds of carpets there hasn't been any problems. Also, Simple Green is a "Wool-Safe" product so you can use it on fabrics too but we are diluting it so keep that in mind. Not all products that are above neutral pH have to be rinsed though many do, this one has been fine.

    Curious why you didn’t use the black brush instead of the bonett?

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only use the brush when I want to scrub the prespray into the carpets WITHOUT absorbing it while cleaning. In most cases the bonnet actually out scrubs and out cleans the brush by a wide margin so unless I was going to use some sort of extractor to remove the soils and stains and prespray, it's just faster and easier and more effective to use the bonnet.

  • @KevinsNorthernExposure
    @KevinsNorthernExposure 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    curious why you wouldn't start with the black brush? The bonnet seems to be doing a fine job on the surface, but the brush would seem to get a little deeper in the pile? Thanks for the vids.

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would seem that that is the truth and it is logical BUT we actually found in real-world scenarios that using the brush generally wasn't necessary and only amounted to an extra step that, if skipped, didn't detract from the end result.
      In other words, the bonnet will still reach the fiber top to bottom if you take a second longer to hit the stain. When it is gone, it's gone and more passes are just more passes. It might feel good to do more than necessary but it doesn't add up to be worth it.
      It's subjective though. When you think you've done enough, someone else may feel you either did way more than necessary or that you should have done more.
      It's the nature of the game.
      I had to wash dishes once in a commercial kitchen for a day labor job. I carefully washed each dish and the regular workers watched me with amusement. They took over and showed me how it is really done and what you do is dunk it, spray it, and rack it. I wouldn't do it that way at home but I don't wash a thousand dishes each lunchtime either and they did so they were right on that one.
      This job was a test to see IF the carpet could be saved. After this they had to go in and fix all the damage and repaint so the carpets were going to be cleaned again. So we cleaned them the final time later and I don't recall making a video of that because they already looked basically clean from this session and the maintenance men didn't make them too much worse than they were when we finished. So this video wasn't supposed to be the final cleaning anyway and that was in our minds when we did it.
      Using the brush can be helpful at times, but doing an extra pass with a bonnet can also do the job and is faster so most of the time you can skip the brush if you want to.

      @KevinsNorthernExposure 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoeWheeler nice. Thank you. I'm a maintenance man at a new building...5 stories....I convinced my boss that I could save them $$ if I cleaned carpets myself. (Nobody wanted to do it as hoses from truck won't reach and not cost effective to bring a portable for 1 apartment) We bought an expensive extractor..but I quickly realized I would need to scrub the carpet first, so convinced them to buy the oreck as it's fairly inexpensive....then I ran into your videos, so they've helped a lot.
      When you mentioned "degreaser"...are you talking dawn dishsoap or???

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple Green used at 4-8oz per gallon of water is a good wool-safe cleaner...prespray the carpet with a garden sprayer, scrub with the Oreck and then extract with the extractor using plain water.
      You can use peroxide on organic stains (pet messes, vomit stains, coffee etc) and spray straight ammonia on colored stains or dark, dingy areas...scrub with Oreck and then extract.
      You can buy peroxide from Sally's Beauty Supply in stronger formulas than the stuff from the pharmacy. 20 Volume Clear Developer is twice as strong as basic peroxide and they sell it for hair dying so ask them and they can help you find it.
      I hope this helps!

    How do you determine what to charge? By room or square foot?

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I usually have a base price for three rooms (living room, dining area, and bedroom) and a price per additional room. Also, I have a minimum charge so if someone wants one room then they have to pay enough to be worth my trip and time to clean. Prices are based on your local rates which vary wildly but in general, are based on about $100 per hour of cleaning time (so not including standing around talking with the customer but actual clean time).

    Which one is the follow up vid?

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a pre-vacuum video
      th-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=RTLZ3pmwyE0
      but we may not have done a cleaning video for it. You can see the condition of the carpets were such that we decided there wasn't really anything to show to make another cleaning (bonnet with Oreck Orbiter, or extraction with the Rug Doctor, or both), so we showed how the carpets appeared several weeks after making this original video. The 1,000 Subscribers video was a test for the property to see if the carpet could be salvaged, or needed replacement. So we showed the pre-vac video just to show that it was saved, and came out very nice indeed! Thanks for asking!

    Does that oreck work better then the Dupri neat steam cleaner for carpet?

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get asked this all the time and here is the way I recommend you choose which to buy or if maybe you want both.
      If you are primarily going to be cleaning carpet and floors and are going to be trying to go out and earn money for this go with the Oreck Orbiter because it can handle the production rate you need to be profitable.
      If you are needing something that can clean carpet and floors BUT you also want to be able to clean furniture, or counters and home fixtures, auto interiors etc than the Dupray NEAT would be better suited to the wide variety of jobs you are wanting to do.
      SInce you asked about carpet then I would say if you are doing a little carpet and want to save money and get a machine that you can use for lots of other things too than the NEAT is perfect for you.
      If you are going to do A LOT of carpet get an Oreck Orbiter and learn to bonnet-clean and/or encap clean because this is a professional level AFFORDABLE way to go and you can easily earn back the money it costs you for the Oreck, some pads/bonnets, a sprayer and some cleaning chemicals, and a decent vacuum cleaner. Watch my videos to learn how to make money with it and make something for yourself with very little comparative investment.
      For home use and you aren't going to mess with self-employment the NEAT is SWEET and you'll use it all the time.
      That being said choose the one that you will use the most initially and add the other later down the road and you will have a great combo where you can clean almost anything in the average home or office and make money doing it.
      I hope this helps!

    How much did you charge for this job if you don’t mind me asking!? Thank you!

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This was a no charge job to see if the carpet could be saved, which would lead to a later cleaning (or not). We cleaned the carpet a couple of months later for $120 (but didn't video it because it was basically cleaned already). So how the free test worked was if we saw the carpet couldn't be cleaned we would have stopped after a few minutes and told them to go ahead and replace it, but we ended up doing the whole living room to show them it would be okay to save this carpet. We generally would only do a test spot but that wasn't enough proof in this instance. It worked out fine for us to do this initial free clean for a later payoff. Also, it should be said that since we made a video and monetized it on TH-cam, and put links in for Amazon, that the free part of this job (the video part) paid too. So the eventual $120 plus continuing revenue means that this job can eventually pay hundreds of dollars over it's life which can add up to over $1000 in time. So video of work can make even a free or low paying job become the best paying job you'll ever do (potentially). It's all under the surface when you consider the possible income over a long period of time. In that light, this job is still paying us...Hope that helps give you some inspiration you can capitalize on.

      I use off the shelf everyday cleaning products to show people how the equipment works without expensive chemicals, so bear that in mind.
      Currently, I use Fabuloso, mixed at one to two cups per gallon of water (it's sold in many places in various scents, but it is a neutral pH of 7.0 and doesn't leave any residue.
      I also use ammonia, which I use full strength for spots, and diluted with water for larger areas. You can dilute it as much as you need, and it is a high pH but breaks down as it is exposed to air, and also doesn't leave a residue.
      Finally I use peroxide for organic stains (pet, coffee spills, some food and drinks, blood, etc) which is sold at Sally's Beauty Supply as 20 Volume Developer (for hair coloring) and is very inexpensive. It is a low pH but also breaks down when exposed to air, and won't affect carpet pH.
      You can use the stuff I use (the videos show what you can expect for results) or try some of the commercial presprays available, but keep in mind that pH levels above 7.0 (neutral) will leave a residue that can make carpets resoil quickly, so you want to rinse after cleaning (50/50 vinegar and water will do nicely, just spray it on and leave it to dry).
      Hope this helps!

    At 13:54 the gentleman says regarding the prespray that it has a high Ph. Why is this bad? Just curious. Thanks.

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chemistry is what cleans the carpet, combined with agitation, heat were possible, and absorption, or use of vacuum to remove stains and soils. If you want to more easily remove the most common substances that result in stain in carpets, you need to use cleaning solutions with higher than 7ph (neutral) or alkaline as opposed to acid (lower than 7ph), because these help to break the chemical bond which makes the stains grip the carpet fibers. But, after the cleaning process is completed (removal of stains at least), the high ph of any residue from the cleaning chemicals, will easily and quickly attract dirt and stain causing substances. This natural chemical attraction therefore makes cleaning carpets easier, but re-soiling easier as well, if the ph is allowed to remain higher (than 7.0 neutral) by not flushing out or absorbing the chemical residue. Ideally (though near impossible at times) you want to lower the ph through removing as much chemical residue as possible, and perhaps going to the level of adding acidic chemical compounds back in (acid wash) through application of an after treatment. This can be done if desired through adding something as simple as vinegar to the rinse water in a home extractor, or application with a sprayer after the cleaning process. Though not usually necessary to acid rinse, it's a thing, and some do it. It can depend also on local water hardness and other conditions that make it more or less necessary. So high ph cleans, but can also cause rapid resoiling, whereas neutral can clean a little more slowly (where agitation does more of the work, such as when we have used Fabuloso, which is rated at 7.0 ph, which works for less dirty carpets just fine), but can be alleviated somewhat by efforts to flush out or absorb more than just the stain, but the chemical residue used to treat the stain, as well. It's fairly easy to do in practice so most of this occurs without you having to put too much consideration into it.

    • @Yodaismycopilot
      @Yodaismycopilot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Thanks for the thorough and articulate explanation. Just curious, if one uses Simply Green as you are apparently doing in this video, does the Simply Green smell (or "fragrance" depending on your point of view) persist after the carpet dries?

    Where can I get pre spray please

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All I use is either Simple Green or Fabuloso. These are both readily available general purpose household cleaners, not specifically formulated for carpet cleaning but still managing to do a great job.
      You need to mix either at one to two cups per gallon of water in a sprayer and you're all set.
      You don't have to use specialty presprays formulated for carpet cleaning unless you choose to, but keep in mind that many of these products are for professional users who understand the potential health risk associated with exposure to skin and mucous membranes, so use extreme caution with the professional products.
      I elect to use the safer, easier to source, and far less expensive general consumer grade products, because they clean well and won't give me health problems down the road.
      Also, due to the nature of my channel, making videos of equipment people may wish to purchase, I show how that equipment performs without specialty cleaning products, so they have to do the brunt of the work with their functionality, not getting results based on a high end cleaning product.
      Hope that helps. In this video the Oreck Orbiter and Carpet Cleaning Bonnet did the cleaning, not an expensive prespray. The machine is a great cleaner!

      In this case, we agreed to just try so everyone would know IF it could be done but YES if they had decided to not have it cleaned we would have been out for our time and effort. But this method of "testing" an area or room also can sell a job to someone who would never think a carpet could be salvaged so it is necessary once in a while. Getting paid is always the ideal situation though.

    Can you guys do a PH video?

    • @JoeWheeler
      @JoeWheeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a great video out there that explains the basics better than we could here: th-cam.com/video/K7V1hWSCg2c/w-d-xo.html
      My brother used the term pH incorrectly of course in this video. He meant high pH (over 7 on the scale) which is where most carpet detergents sit. It is ideal to get the carpets as close to neutral when finished as possible by rinsing them thoroughly. What is not successfully rinsed in considered "residue" and leads to rapid re-soiling, which is why we extract in most cases (not in this video which isn't a typical job). Watch the video linked above and hopefully that will explain pH to you a little better than we did. Thanks Los Lakers!

    I would have burned the house down. Looks like they used the carpet as a planter!

    This has to be fake. Who makes carpet look like that and how?

      It's all too real. You can see lot's of videos on my channel using the Orbiter, and a Rug Doctor, to clean carpets even dirtier than this one. It's the chemistry of a pre-spray that works on this type of stain, and agitation to release the stains from the carpet. Most dirty carpets can be cleaned very easy if you know how to use the tools and proper chemistry to remove the stains. People do it all the time, and lot's of channels show similar results. So believe your eyes on this one because it actually is pretty easy to clean most carpets once you learn the basic technique. Thanks for commenting, and I hope you get a chance to look around at some other videos to see that this is actually normal (no big deal at all) cleaning that most anyone can easily learn to do.

    How can people do those things to other people's property ?. I don't understand how people can live in filth & scum. It's disgusting.

      @@JoeWheeler Likely , as how the hell could they not see they're living in filth. I know they have underlying problems, but those people think the world revolves around them. They need to clean up their act & go to rehab.
